Help identifying front struts / Bearings

    Hi,

I have a set of front struts that came on my MK3 2.0L Capri. The struts are the thick tube variety that take the RS / Capri 2.0L inserts. Recently I decided to change the wheel bearings. I ordered 2.0L capri / RS Escort bearings which arrived and did not fit either the Hub or the centre axle. I did some quick measurements and ordered a set of MK2 escort wheel bearings. Unfortunately this were not correct either. The outside wheel bearing was a perfect fit. THe inner wheel bearing was a perfect fit for the Hub but the axle diameter was 2mm too small.

I decided to be a bit more careful with my measurements and the following are the dimensions of the old bearings.

Outer/big bearing OD 50mm, ID 29mm, width 15mm. (Standard MK2 escort OD size MK2 Mexico ID Size)
    Inner/small bearing OD 40mm, ID 17.5mm, width 14.5mm. (Standard MK2 Escort size)
    Seal
OD 55mm, ID 40mm (Standard MK2 Escort size)

Any idea what variety of struts these are.

In order to keep the project moving I have had to re-use the bigger wheel bearing but I would like to figure out what I have so that I can order some new bearings

Any help with this would be appreciated.

    Regards
    Tom

Re: Help identifying front struts / Bearings

I think that I might have solved my own problem. From the Burton web site the front wheel bearings from a 3.0L capri are the correct dimensions.

    https://www.burtonpower.com/wheel-br...an-qwb416.html

Outer bearing OD 50mm, ID 29mm, width 14.5mm.
Inner bearing OD 40mm, ID 17.5mm, width 14.5mm.

    Application:
    Ford Capri Mk1 3.0 V6 10/1971-1974 (front)
    Ford Capri Mk2 3.0 V6 1974-1978 (front)
    Ford Capri Mk3 3.0 V6 & 2.8 V6 1978-1981 (front)
    Ford Granada Mk1 1972-1977 (front)
    Ford Granada Mk2 1977-1985 (front)
Ford Escort MK3 1.1/1.3/1.6/1.6D (not van) 1980-1985 (rear)
    Ford Escort Mk3 1.6i/XR3i 1982-1985 (rear)
Ford Escort Mk3 RS Turbo Series 1 1984-1985 (rear)
    Ford Escort Mk3 RS1600i 1981-1983 (rear)
    Ford Escort Mk3 XR3 1980-1982 (rear)
Ford Escort Mk4 1.1/1.3/1.4/1.6/1.6D/1.8D (not van) 1986-1990 (rear)
    Ford Escort Mk4 1.6i/XR3i 1986-1990 (rear)
Ford Escort Mk4 RS Turbo Series 2 1986-1990 (rear)
    Ford Orion Mk1 1.3/1.6/1.8D 1983-1985 (rear)
    Ford Orion Mk2 1.4/1.6/1.6D/1.8D 1986-1990 (rear)

The struts from a 3.0L Capri must have been swapped over on to the 2.0L capri previously. Mystery solved

Does the brake disc mount with bolts from the front rather than the rear ?, if so definitely 3.0S struts.

I had not taken any notice of this before but I had a quick look and yes the brake disk is mounted using 4 bolts from the front of the hub. Is there any advantage or other disadvantage of these hubs over the standard Capri items? The look at bit heavier to me

i can think of two possible advantages, firstly it would make the track slightly wider, secondly it was probably better for brake cooling as the heat would dissipate quicker easier into the wheel

    Thanks,

That is interesting and good to hear that there is some advantage. I thought that they would not be so good due to the smaller bearings than the MK3 Capri laser bearings.

One disadvantage is that I don't believe anyone makes vented discs for these unless RS3100's are like this.

RS3100 had vented discs and the hubs sound similar, but I'm not sure you can buy the discs
I remember the discs were very deep and the hub flange it bolted too quite thin

    Have you got a picture?

Here are the images of the 3.0L Capri front hubs. They are quite a different shape to the standard MK2 escort or Capri hubs. Luckily they are in good enough condition with just some surface rust and paint over spray.

Yes that's what I was thinking of, new discs are available from Burtons, etc

Re: Help identifying front struts / Bearings

    Thanks Gavin,

It took me two sets of bearings to figure out what I had. I eventually figured out what I had from the Burton web site.

    https://www.burtonpower.com/wheel-br...an-qwb416.html .

They list the ID and OD of each bearing which is a very useful resource.

If anyone is interested, These are the disks:

Re: Help identifying front struts / Bearings

Do you know what they measure from the face of the disc to the edge of the hub face please?
They look similar to the rear discs used on my baby atlas, in that they've got a big offset.

Re: Help identifying front struts / Bearings

I will have to take the wheel off later to get an accurate measurement but it is approximately 60mm from the face of the disk to the face of the hub

Re: Help identifying front struts / Bearings

Ok, thanks. After I looked them up in the Burton catalogue I realised they're different to my rear discs anyway as my discs are larger in diameter.
