    Pinto camshaft

I know it’s been asked a million times before, but I’ve got a standard non injection 2L pinto that I’ll be fitting into my Mk1 Escort estate . Thinking of putting a different camshaft in it to pep it up a bit . Not fussed about mega power , read so many different things FR32 , FR30 , BF134 ? Want it idle nicely and will be using a 32/36 Weber . What would you guys go for based on real life experience. Thanks Russ

whats your exhaust manifold and are you going to skim the cylinder head ?
sideways is the best way to turn a corner

More than likely an Ashley 4-2-1 and yes the head will have a skim to raise the compression a touch

I have a FR30 with a Vulcan Stage 1 head. Idles and drives very nice and behaves in traffic and at junctions.
This cam suits my driving style on country and mountain roads.

A lot swear by the old Stig Erson 134 profile for a decent fast road cam, the BF134's probably a copy of that and I think piper do an equivalent profile as probably Kent do, but I am not sure what they number theirs as.

It might be worth a look at what Newman have to offer, they are by far the cheapest of the cam grinders but don't worry their quality doesn't suffer, they must have lower overheads.

Interested in this post! So with an FR30 camshaft, is it necessary to machine the valve spring seats? also how much would you recommend skimming the head by? Also, would this cam work ok with twin 40s if upgraded as well?

    Thanks, Neil

I believe mine were relieved to prevent coil binding, but I've spoken to others with the same cam who didn't get this done. Might be worth a quick call to Kent helpline.

My head was skimmed, but I can't remember the CC volume of the chamber or by how much, sorry. My final CR worked out to about 10.2:1 with pistons flush to deck on 93m bore. Went with this, as was not advised to go any higher than 10.5:1

Car drives and idles very smoothly on this cam with Honda Fireblade carbs and showed 153bhp at flywheel on the RR.

It's far from a fast or high revving cam, but for driving around on the roads on a lazy Sunday, it suits me down to the ground. However, You can still have some fun with it if you want...

cam will work without skimming head, but 0.5mm will pep it up a bit, in fact, you could use a felpro head gasket and not skim the head that will give you about 0.5 ratio more which is enough. going much more wont do a lot powerwise, but you will probably end up having trouble starting it as the dynamic compression will be very high with that cam.

it will work just fine on twin 40's.

from memory if your buying a cam from kent with there springs, the spring seats should be machined down by about 1mm, however lots of people dont and get away with it
