Help Wanted, CO level high running rich on tickover

Hi all, I’ve been having problems with my standard YB turbo fitted to my mk2 escort running too rich for some time now, seem to have changed everything except the loom, I bought a gunson analyser as I can see it’s running too rich on start up and tick over , black smoke out of exhaust and black plugs and smells rich, I tried it today for the first time and after it warmed up it was showing around 11 on the analyser when I think it should be 2-3?? Adjusting the white screw on the ecu didn’t do a lot , I could hear the change in the engine briefly then the meter would drop down to about 8 or 9 when I revved it but back up to 11 on tickover, the only way I could describe it is it’s like the chokes stuck on so is something telling the ecu the engines not warm enough or something similar? It drives ok but can hesitate under acceleration it doesn’t seem to misfire though, I have the ignition light that comes on unless I Rev it so could that be the problem? I had the alternator checked not long ago and the regulator replaced , it’s got quite a big battery on it, does it need a specific battery? I did buy a new map sensor but that didn’t do a lot so put the magneti one back on, could that be the culprit? Thanks In advance for your help, Sam

Have you thought about taking it to Mikeanics in Congleton to let them have a look at it?

And is it completely standard ? all parts ? Fuel pressure normal ? Injectors all good ? Correct map sensor ? Correct coolant temp sensor and all wiring relating to it is ok ?

I wouldn’t bother with the gunson analyser either, check fuel pressure and water temp sensor in the back of the head

As far as I’m aware, everything is standard, put new sensors on it, put a new sealed fuel pressure Reg on it and not touched it, it’s running yellow Injectors but I’ve not checked them, any advice on best way to test them thanks

Yes, read the link I already posted which covers pretty much most stuff.

its not going to cost anything to talk to the guy. the problem with diagnostic work is sometimes its simple and other times anything but, so there no such thing as an average cost. but anyone decent should be able to give you a ball park figure for an initial look at it.

if you take it to him for christs sake give him all the info you can. it never ceases to amaze me how often i spend time looking at a car trying to work out what is (or was) wrong only to find later on the customer didnt give me all the info

Thanks I’ll give him a bell, think I’ve gone as far as I can with it now been messing for about a year and it’s a lot better than it was , drives ok when on a run just niggling issue of black exhaust and plugs and rich running , looked at all the big turbo website stuff and tried the voltage readings on the ecu etc. Think I’m at my limit so need to take the plunge and let a pro have a look
