    What engine to use.

I have been out of the game for a few years now, and have a itch to build something, My car has arrived with a very tired 1300 crossflow, I know Could slot in a 1600, or Pinto, or even build a 1300 screamer, But this its all old hat, I fancy something a bit more modern, Things have moved on a lot since I last played with 4 pots, So, what Engine, Im iunsure. the only criteria is it must be a 4pot FORD, produce in excess of 150hp, and cheap to buy, and what gearbox would bolt up to it, Im after something quick to build thats not going to break the bank and not hard to find
I have on my shelf of bits, Bike style Jenveys, and an Emerald 6K if needed.

duratec or zetec must be the first thing that comes to mind. Although the install parts can mount up quite quickly in cost.

    Hi Ian,

I went through this exact situation with my escort.

    If you're looking at 2.0:

Pinto: getting more expensive to buy, heavy, expensive to tune but "proper".
Zetec. Cheap to buy (even new!), cheap conversion parts, simple, heavy, high power tuning gets expensive.
Duratec: cheap to buy second hand, light, capable of really big power, conversion parts a a bit more expensive and a bit trickier. Much more modern, chain driven.

Gearbox dead easy for all 3 really, you can get a variety of bellhousings for ford boxes, mx5 (for the duratec) or adaptor plates for the rx8 box.

I ended up going for a 2.0 duratec because if i ever want much more than 200bhp the duratec is probably the best NA engine for it without going down the BDG/Millington route and the associated expense. A 2.0 duratec should be 180bhp+ just with a decent exhaust and itb's.

I used a wet sump, bellhousing and world cup x member from retroford. Had to remote mount oil filter. Simpson manifold (though others are available).

Having said that, if I'd had a pinto lying around I may have just used that but my car started as a bare shell so i had to start from scratch with everything.

    Cheers,
    Iain

with an ecu that can control it properly (ie mapped vvt) the st170 engine is streets ahead of a normal blacktop.

as for cost dont know, but its prob as cheap to buy a whole working st170 focus that way you can see/hear it running not have to take somones word

    Re: What engine to use.

I think you can still get crate zetec's for about £2k?

I paid £400 for my st150 duratec with 60k miles. Saw the car running, checked oil/fluids etc.

    My conversion consisted of:

    WCXM & mounts
    flywheel & clutch
    starter
    alternator
    bellhousing
    manifold
    water rail
    wet sump
ITB's (i went for jenvey heritage and am trying to get a new cast rocker cover)
    ECU (Emerald K6)
Coil pack needed relocated, as did the oil filter - there are a few options but all are really close to the mounts.

All that cost a lot more than the engine!!

st170 motors are £300 but unless its in the car then milage will be a lottery

I actually toyed with the idea of buying an MX5 donor car. Pick the right one and you get a duratec/6-speed box, clutch/flywheel/manifold etc already in a rwd orientation and it looks like it would be a relatively simple swap.
