type-9 popping out of 1st
Hi All,
just looking for some opinions/direction if anyone has experience of this. Had a targa yesterday in the escort and everything was going well until it started to pop out of 1st. il post all the details below in bullet point format to help with the diagnosis - also see vid below, it happens twice as you'll see, once of the way up, and once on the way back as i gingerly try not to select reverse! thanks! i have two things in mind, the indent spring too weak/ not tight enough? and the selector block on the end of the selector shaft bent? anyway details below, thanks guys
the box:- low mileage unabused t9 i took out of a rotten sierra, seemed in mint condition, never opened.
- i just recently fully rebuilt the box with a BGH E7 gearkit, new baulk rings, everything else seemed mint
- changes all gears perfectly
- goes into first from second braking hard, even at high revs, no issue
- no noises - everything else is perfect
- comma 75/90 oil as recommended by BGH
- quaife short shift
- HD saddle bush
The issue:- popping out of first ONLY under braking over bumps mainly it seems.
- handbraking and accelerating etc hard doing tight tests, not a problem.
- by the end of the day i could expect when and where it would happen - coming off the power, and /or heavy braking over bumps

Re: type-9 popping out of 1st
jumping out of gear on overrun is normally a worn syncro hub

Re: type-9 popping out of 1st
thanks for the reply Graham. id be shocked if it was, i inspected everything meticulously when building the box, and this is the first time used in anger. i've taken apart way worse with no jumping out of gear issues. what part of the hub exactly ?

Re: type-9 popping out of 1st
could be any part of it, or perhaps for some reason you have end float in a shaft that will do it too

Re: type-9 popping out of 1st
shouldn't be, everthing was in excellent condition, and i'd know my way around a t9. there was definitely no wear on the hub that would indicate anything like this should happen, ive seen way worse.
i havent even taken the car off the trailer yet, i suppose the first thing is check the simple things like the indent plug/spring and the saddle and go from there
