    Pinto rods length

Hello, I'm in the process of building a race pinto, I've found a set of maxspeeding rods but they're 128.3mm (5.050inches), meaning the top of a std size piston will come out from the block around 0.5mm, are they built to have the pistons machined? I'm not able to find them in correct std length. (127mm or 5inches).

Do you know what pistons you'll be using too?

@Miniliteman Farndon from burton means 35% tax, so I prefer to avoid buying from UK if I can.

When I wrote I'm not able to find them I meant from that company
@rallyrob Not yet, I'm waiting to have rods ordered, I can have pistons made on size from CPS, but first I'd like to be sure that rods are actually longer... Still don't get why they sell "pinto" rods 1.3mm longer. I'll try to enquire them to be sure.

Whats the problem machining a bit off the top of the pistons? i dont know of any piston that you cant take at least 1mm off of

Given that I still have to buy everything, i would prefer to work with std lenght sizes if available, machining the block instead, but in case, yes that will be the the way to go.

    Re: Pinto rods length

    Why not go longer rod?
If you are thinking custom piston, why not go to 138 or even 5,7” rods?
A custom piston to suit 5,7” could save as much as 300 grams per piston.

I believe the only reason for the OE Ford design was manufacturing compromises to keep cost reasonable with the technology available at the time.

On the other hand if you can source a low comp piston from the transit pintos with 40,35 ch you should be fairly on the money with piston to deck height, see the picture in the second post of this thread.

Oh and if you find a ready source of those pistons new I’m interested in a link.

Thanks for that image, very helpful.

Regarding going long with crazy rods, I can agree that you have a lighter piston and should mean a more responsive engine. But I'm trying to stay in the "guidelines" of historic motorsport regs, not like someone is ever going to open my engine, I just feel "cleaner" to have an engine with similar caracteristic as described on FIA regulations.

    Re: Pinto rods length

    Quick update, I'm stupid.
I was about those rods without realizing that price was for 4 rods, so they're way too cheap, basically come from china, still high quality relative to the price, but I prefer not to risk it.

I think I'm going for K1 rods, from USA, found a seller from Germany, 127mm not 128.5.

I'm still waiting on a reply about italian made cps pistons relative to the sizes and possibility of custom machined pistons from "factory".

    Re: Pinto rods length

I think I found my own answer in the land of low compression engines.
    https://www.summitracing.com/parts/uem-1156-std

Now the question is to find a low low cost source for the Teflon buttons and the recipient for a low cost bottom end that should not grenade just because I buzz a bit past 7500 rpm on the lower gears.
I also wonder if the included gudgeon pins fit in those connecting rods or if a set of cosworth pins are requiered.

I don't know if it can help, but I've been told that CPS make custom forged pistons, so if you need forged shorter compression height pistons they can provide it.
