    Pinto oil pressure delay

I'm somewhat used to oil pressure 2~3 sec after startup with High Volume oil pump. But wonder what's normal for stock pinto. Is 10~12sec about normal? Including noisy valve train until the pressure builds. TIA

no that not normal, a heathy pinto irrespective of oil pump will have full oil pressure ( not just light out) in a couple seconds

Thanks Graham. In your opinion what could be the cause of such a problem?

Why does the engine have a HC pump?
Have you tried to get oilpressure with the drill-in-the-distributor method?
Is this happening suddenly, was it ok before and/or have you changed oil/oilfilter ?
Does the engine have an oilcooler/thermostat?

Oil pressure is good, 40psi but takes about 10sec to respond from cold start. The crank seal needs replacing and oil level is low, 2 .5L. Filter was changed to large type but cannot say if it was occurring prior to these changes

what temperature/ rpm are you getting that 40 psi? on cold oil they will generate 70psi at not much more than idle, infact i usually see 70psi on a drill

As Graham said 40 psi is low. Suggest you add some oil and refit a small (or old) filter and try again.

    Re: Pinto oil pressure delay

loose oil pickup or failed gasket between pickup and pump will cause low pressure, that said it might just be worn out. your valve train noise on start up may be teh bottom end given a pinto doesnt have hydraulic tappets

    Re: Pinto oil pressure delay

Noise from camshaft not "valve train" sorry.
After reading your replies I recall that I recently used oil stop leak to plug the rear main seal It didn't work (surprise surprise) but it did thicken the oil so this might be the cause. I've only driven the car twice since pouring that crap in.
The engine is coming out regardless to do the seal so I will inspect the pump, tube and screen too.

    Re: Pinto oil pressure delay

camshaft still shouldnt make noise, do you mean crankshaft, if thats making noise until pressure comes up it and or its bearings are worn

Ok. The sump is off and problem, obvious. The pan has been pushed up, hard into the pickup tube, pressing the mesh against the pan. Bearings and pump look fine so yeah pretty happy with that!

Engine back in and running. Pressure within 2 seconds and I have an extra 15psi! No cam noise. No oil & coolant leaks
