You don't say what car or rear axle, I'll assume it's either English or Atlas halfshafts. Generally the studs should knock straight out towards the back plate with a decent smack with a stout hammer unless someone has put a tack of weld on the back of the studs. Failing that remove the halfshaft and get the back of the flange on a solid surface and drive them out that way, this is normally a two person job, one to hold and the other to strike the hammer. Soaking in penetrating oil's like pissing in bed awake on a job like that.

If the halfshaft is out another method is using a big vice as a press. Trap a large socket between vice and drive flange with back of stud in the socket, then close the other vice jaw on the front stud face and just wind the jaw in and push the stud out. Same in reverse to press them in if you want to avoid physical violence!

Done this a few times with no issue. From memory you cannot get the stud out of the halfshaft with it in the axle. You dont have enough space to wriggle them out with trappping on the axle case. Although it is a good base to loosen the studs with a big lump hammer then just slide the half shaft out enough to get your room. I have a shaft puller i made using a big weight to get the half shaft out but you will need 2 studs in to use that sort of affair. It was a modded draper tool.

Putting them back in i used a spacer and an old wheel nut and just wound them in with a socket.

I also took the oppurtunity to convert to metric nuts

Front hubs seem more difficult i had some that would just not budge and others that flew out ?? Same idea to re-fit though.
