    Hi Alladdin,

The adapter will be handy to rule out what's causing the problem, I've not seen an SSD fail like that before they normal completely give up.

It might be a problem with the controller on the laptop motherboard but the adapter will help rule that out

i have managed to drag some important data from it this evening . it was VERY slow and i didnt get much before it began dropping the drive. i will try again tomorrow but there's no way i can clone it.
i then have to get an operating system back on the new drive - hopefully dell site will have something.

It's good you have got some data back

I wouldn't try and find a Dell version of windows, just download the Windows 10 Creation Tool and create the boot media onto a USB Drive. All 99% of the drivers will install automatically and any that are missing should be picked up by running windows updates

yes, thats the other option i was considering, i am wondering if the std install has any advantage in the more modern world - mainly the ability to re install everything to factory ( is that actually still on laptops?) but as windows is much more stable these days i wonder if it helps really. new usb sticks came today too so im ready to go at it now.

Your much better off with a standard install from Mircosoft, Dell/HP and the others fill their builds with crap that ultimately slows the laptop down

There will be a lot less updates to be installed once Windows installs because most of the latest updates are included in the Creation Tool

Have you tried cloning the disk with a disk tool ?

That would be the best option to try and at least create a backup, onto either a regular spinny drive or another SSD. This method doesn't care really what's on it etc and is generally fairly fast compared to trying to save say the same amount of data normally

Some HDD caddy's with 2 or more disks sometimes offer a disk clone option too

Again, as cloning does not use the normal access via windows etc, it's not the same.

A full clone is usually far far faster than you'd ever copy the same amount across within windows. It is almost always the first thing to try
