    Post Another YB N/A question.

So, after a complete engine re-build and two sets of hydraulic lifters, second set brand new INA ones lifters still get noisey when they feel like it. I really cant stand noisey tappets.

Thinking of going over to Mechanical, I know they are a pain to set-up but prepared to do that if it means no more tap tap tap.
The question is my cams are hydraulic spec cams, can I use mechanical lifters with them or do I need to buy another set of cams?

you will need another set of cams, opening and closing ramps are different, hydraulic cams and solid lifters WILL be noisy.

AFAIK hydraulic cams lifters need hydraulic cams but you could use solid lifters with any cam.

Still think there is something else wrong here.

almost certainly the valve train will be noisy, adding a tappet clearance to hydraulic closing ramp has the same effect as a lifter bleeding down. you can do it but it wont be quiet, unless you ran with bugger all valve clearance, which then creates other issues.

that said i would agree with you something else is wrong

    Thanks for the replies all.
Loads of oil getting to valve gear. great oil pressure.
When I removed the lifters all was full of oil, no nasty marks on top of buckets or cam lobes.

    Cams are not new though.

So, it looks like its new camshaft time then.
Really annoys me though how much they charge for Cosworth cams compared with other makes.

I think they call it 'Cosworth Tax'.!

And new followers - never a good idea to use old followers with new cams. You 'might' get away with them but may not.

that's a bit of a blanket statement! the market for Yb cams is small compared to many other engines.

but if you were to scroll through Newmans catalog you will find yb cams are the same price as cams for almost every other 16v twin cam engine.

Just curious, in an old thread you said the BD14's were new. So they were not?

BD14's where a bit of an unknown to be honest. Bought used but look new and run noisey. strange thing is its not really engine temperature related. Tap Tap comes and goes.

Looking at new cams, cant decide whether to go for Newman PH 2/3 (288/410) which are hydro profile or PH4 (300/44) which is mechanical. Not really into rough idle, peaky cams but then again dont want it noisey either.

    Alternative suggestions welcome.

Interesting you say that Graham because I always thought that.
I got them from a pal of mine but manufacturer is unknown.

Newmans site says BD14 are Hydro but that could be just their ones I suppose.

Is there an easy way to identify hydro cams over mechanical?

no, the differences are in the ramps and subtle.
