    Toyota Starlet kp60 race car

Now its getting close to being finished i thought i would post some pics of my starlet.

I bought it a couple of years ago as a slightly rusty rolling shell, that had sat in a barn for years, with the intention of a quick basic build to get me out racing. As with most projects it has taken far longer than it was supposed to. I was hoping to be out for the start of this season but should be ready soon. The plan is to do some QMN meetings and maybe some SEMSEC meetings down at Lydden depending on how the non existent budget goes!

It has a standard 4age at the moment so wont be that powerful but is fairly light so that should help. It has an english axle on gaz coilovers and Leda cortina legs up front as they almost bolt straight onto starlet steering arms.

I still have a list of jobs to finish, like tidying the wiring and actually getting it running, but its getting shorter.

    Hope you like it!

    Nelly,

I'm really starting to dislike you for the following reasons:

    1) You have a rwd starlet.
    2) You have a 4age in it.
    3) This is where your taking the piss...........those wheels.

To sum up it's simply plain old jealously m8

Looks a cracking motor m8. Well done.

I think that you should of used a 4k stock rod engine, you'd of been in my class then ;-).......... Where did you get the top mounts?

Re: Toyota Starlet kp60 race car

I did consider engine options when i started building the car but even on big carbs a 4k would prob only be 120bhp. i dont think that would have kept up with your crossflow!

I realise im gonna be bumped up a couple of classes because of the engine but if the rest of the car is good this year i will probably build an engine over the winter. I think 180bhp is fairly realistic from a basic build so that would give me a bit more of a chance.

The top mounts were an ebay bargain. I had to buy the unidentified struts they were on but for a tenner it was worth the risk.

I cant wait to get out there!

The pedal box is from Compbrake. It was an easier option than trying to wedge an escort bias box in there. Ive not used one before and its taken a little bit of fiddling to get it to work properly but feels ok now.

The rear spoiler was available as a TRD option from your toyota dealer in 1984 so should be ok to use in QMN

Cool car always nice to see something different. Get it out in the QMN. I know a guy who has a full house 4age engine which is showing a shade over 200bhp so 180bhp should be good.

Sorry but I think you'll find that it has to be factory fitted, there were some problems with the Seats over similar spoilers a few years ago.

nicks right unless that spoiler was a factory fit option for the starlet the scruts will chuck it out or put you in class A

Classes B, C, D and E Spoiler may not be higher than 50% of the height of rear window, unless the
spoiler fitted is an original production part as fitted on the production line when the vehicle type was
    originally manufactured

Whould like to see action shots of both of them together you dont see many anymore all crashed used for NHR in the 90's or rusted away.

    Like your hubs and calipers

If your interested I have a stainless 4into1 manifold that will need moding as it came off a 7 style car I bought another one from the US and used that so I dont need it PM if your interested.

The ali hubs are from rally design so a good cheap weight saving.

I bought the calipers from a guy who had used them on a radical race car. The fronts are spot on but the rears are also 4 pots so will be a bit of an overkill. i used them because they are lighter than the fiesta calipers i have on my escort so hopefully i will just dial them out on the bias box and proportioning valve.

Im running AP Princess 4 pots up front and cosworth rears manual bias adjuster (standard pedal box for now) but a like the idea of sheding more whieght.

So i have finally got round to finishing most of the little jobs that needed doing. Hopefully it will go on the rollers in the next couple of weeks and then a test session, probably at brands. After all the hard work im looking forward to getting out there racing but it seems i have missed most of the qmn this year and there is only a couple of semsec meetings left as well.

The front suspension is all still starlet based except the legs that are mk1 cortina as they fit onto standard starlet steering arms if you elongate the holes slightly. They were built by Leda, back when they were still in business, and used by a mate in his starlet that he used to race in the 750 championship.
I also moved the shoulder forward on the anti roll bar to give a bit more castor and used some eccentric top mounts to get a bit of camber.

The brakes are wilwoods that i bought secondhand. They had been used on a radical race car but are the same as you would fit on a capri leg.

I pondered about the pedal box for a long time as im also 6 foot 3 and starlets arent the biggest of cars! As no one sells one with hanging pedals and it looked like hardwork to get an escort one to fit.

Yours looks smart, you rarely see a mk1 these days. Is that a 4age on webers?

I pondered about the pedal box for a long time as im also 6 foot 3 and starlets arent the biggest of cars! As no one sells one with hanging pedals and it looked like hardwork to get an escort one to fit.

Yours looks smart, you rarely see a mk1 these days. Is that a 4age on webers?
Shes got a c20xe vauxhall redtop on 45's, tran-x T9 5 speed pro box to a H/D 52" atlas semi floater. Im running a escort bias pedal box but as it was a bare shell build i made a section and stitched into the shell so a unmodified escort pedal box bolds straight in no fuss even around my electric PAS, tried throughout the build to adapt the shell to accept escort bits where possible so if i run into problems on event i can go begging in service and not have to put it on the trailer !
