Tran - X SL 72 oil leak
Found this yesterday and dont know what to make of it.
In a Type 9 box this axle is fixed. But on SL72 or in this one anyway it spins so smoothly it seems it it supposed to. is it? It has been doing this since day one when I bought it new. This gives me the feeling I've missed something.
Is this supposed to be sealed by the bellhousing? My aftermarket bellhousing falls just short sealing it and ends right in the seam of this axle. STD bellhousing could have more meat on the bottom to reach over this axle to seal it via some adhessive. I've used a paper gasket which did not do the job. The spinning axle end ate away the paper and leaked massively.
Here's a clip of it spinning. And leaking, the hole seems to go straight to the oil.

Any insightwill be greatly appreciated. I've contacted the technical staff over at Tran -X but they seem to have some corporate issusseua so unsure wheter I'll ever receive an ansver there.
Cheers folks
Markus

I had a similar problem with my gearbox, until someone pointed out to me you have to run the gasket that goes between the box and the bellhousing......
Mines never leaked since.

Ouch, I need to take my bellhousing to the welders then. I need to ad material to cover the gasket area.
You had an SL72 too then? And the axle was meant to spin trough or in the casing? As regular type 9 sure has fixed axle.

This thin red line shows where my bellhousing ends. It only just fails to cover the axle. New gascet and a trip to the werlers and machine shop just do the job.
And oh, where should one nuy such a gasket? Propably not a ford item?

you could always make your own from some gasket paper or a breakfast cereal box

Re: Tran - X SL 72 oil leak
May well be I have to if these are some sort of special order stuff. I'm do in starting grid in two weeks. And the need for a alloy welder always takes some time around here.
Do you reckon the axle is intended to spin in the casing? I think it is, it would be some sort of unbelievable epic fail on manufacturers part if its designed as solid. But would be nice to hear what others think of it (while waiting for Tran-X to reply. If they ever will, seems they're out of busines) .

yes if its actually the lay shaft, no if its the carrier for the needle rollers which support the layshaft
