    30/34 DFTH jetting - Pinto 2.0

    Hi All,

    I'm running a 205 Pinto in my mk2 Escort.
It's been fully rebuilt and bored to +0.5mm pistons.
Other than that it is completely stock.

I've swapped the set advance electronic distributor for one with vacuum advance and separate module.
Timing was set using the guide on the forum.

I'm using the 30/34 DFTH carb that came with it as stock (a 32/36 is to replace it in the future if I can find one).
I've converted the carb to manual choke, and replaced the idle control motor with a bracket and end-stop bolt.

While I've been running in the engine, I've noticed it doesn't seem to fuel right.
I have adjusted the mixture screw a few times in hope of finding the golden spot, but no succes.
Sometimes I get a little burst of acceleration when letting go of the throttle, sometimes it holds back a bit etc.
Sometimes pulling the choke helps acceleration, while at other times it reduces power.

I've pulled the jets to see if I had any blocked ones, and found that they do not match the factory specs for my carb (85HFDA)
(My carb/engine used to be an automatic, currently fitted with a T9)

    My jets are:

Both idle jets are a bit bigger, but the secondary main jet is smaller with a bigger air corrector.
Could this cause it to run lean once the secondary opens up?

I haven't found anyone selling these jets around here, so figured I'd ask here first before I'm going to order internationally.

The issue you have is that the ESC2 ECU would have advanced the ignition timing quite a bit more than the conventional distributor does. Also for the distributor you have now you will need a vacuum port on the carb that gives no vacuum with the throttle closed (take off just above throttle plate). From memory the DFTH doesn't have that.
If you want to proceed anyway, use 125 and 135 main jets.

For now I'm sticking with the DFTH if I can, since a 32/36 and manifold are hard to come by.
There is one port on the side of the carb that goes to a vacuum/watertemp switch on the bottom of the manifold, and then into a membrane thingy.
    I can T into that.

I've messed around with carbs and injections before, but never much with timing or vacuum advance.
Vacuum advance is only for low and mid load, but not idle then?

    Correct.

Not sure if the vacuumport you mention is a good one for the ignition.
A 32/36 and manifold for the Pinto engine are common parts.

If you've got a spare one about, do send me a message, I've been keeping my eyes open for one for the last month and haven't seen many come by.

    btw, were you at EFE?
I recall seeing a mk2 that looks much like the one in your PF.

Yes I was at EFE. But just for an hour or so, those modern cars with their Chitty Chitty BANG BANG exhausts are not for me.

    Also check 2dehands.be .

You'll have seen my gold-with-black-fenders mk2 at the clublanes then.
I'll keep an eye on the belgian site, until then I will try T-ing into the carb itself and see how it behaves.
