21 years in the making wildo's105e

As the title says i have had my anglia 105e for 21 years. I decided to build and Anglia as escorts were 10 a penny and i got some inspiration in an article in Fast Car magazine (when it did real car stories) and also John Tebenhams cossie powered road car. The plan was to put in a 1600 xflow with escort suspension. I did this as kevin at milton offered his solution but a price out of my pocket and Ebay didn't exist to get parts so easily then. Unfortunately for me i was young and not so clever and Kevin knew better i should have got them cortina struts.

I have struggled for years getting the escort suspension right the spec has spiralled usually to try and get round issues i have come across and i finally lost interest other projects have come gone house kids blah blah and i still have a Mk1 escort which has sapped up my time.

So what have we got apart from a dusty car. Mk2 escort struts converted to 2 1/4 coilover compression struts rose jointed top mounts. Wilwood 4 pots alloy Hi Spec alloy hubs.milton strut brace milton pedal box milton rear disk conversion (when they were weld on !!!) milton A frame and milton turret kit (weld in aswell!!!) so Milton buffs will know how far back some of these bits date from.

The Jewel in the crown is a Nick Stagg machined Lotus twin cam mated to a 2000e box with milton quick shift.

There are many things i have done on this car which could have been done better which is what i intend to do as i have become wiser and also nicked loads of inspiration from you turbsporters.

so why until now to drag it kickin out of it's coating of dust and escort panels well luckily i have been working a lot of over time which has enable me to syphon some family funds away to me.

    Heres a quick taster

so what now then ? well the main stumbling block was getting the bodywork solid of i course i was always going to do this (not) so after a viewing some threads on here 400 miles round trip it ended up here.

10 points for guessing where ? Auldy you can't guess for obvious reasons

That's right South West Restos after seeing the work James has done and recently the 105e he has just completed it has gone on for rear cross member wing repairs and really and other bit of welding and body repair that it needs no paint yet as the rest of my funds will be aimed at getting the escort front end rebuild finished (more to follow on that).

All that is left for me for a few weeks is to watch this whilst the magic is worked and over to James whilst have a well earned break from working overtime

    cheers

cheers guys. The plan at the moment is to get it solid and cleaned up a bit and maybe do a few things that were ok 10 years ago but now the bar has gone higher on classic fords so hopefully improve on a some of it.

    Back again!
Moving on to the front of the wing/valence, the seams are very rusty and falling apart,

    All fixed,

Due to the suspension mods and wheels/tyres it's all very close to the front edge of the wing, time for a trim,

All trimmed back and rolled all the way round,

    That's it for now,
    Thank's for looking,
    Cheers

Well she is back which has led more jobs for me. Updates to come. First job is to adjust the steering rack as I have had to move this around a little to accommodate the starter and sump. The rack moved down and to the right so in am hoping I can compensate this in the steering rack nd combine it with some bump steer mods

Cheers auld, yours is coming on great had a good nose round the other day. James has my escort now to do exactly the same as yours on the front end.

I told you I was following you

I couldn't do it that well myself especially when you invest in full wing tops and wings etc you need it right.

Hi guys minor update as I try my new toy an IPad so if it goes wrong I have waisted £1.99 on tapatalk. Which is minor in car ownership stakes.

Anyhow bought these rims a few years ago for the Anglia for the princely price of £60 and had a go at refurbishing them heres the before and after. They will never be concours but for what paid and some elbow grease I think they have come out ok. Just the other 2 to do now.

Cheers shanksy for the prod. Manage to get this done today in between cleaning mortar off bricks (dam houses). The current x member bolts through the chassis rail but horizontally. Due to the way I have had to move the engine forward there is a bit of fab work, to neaten this the plan is to chassis mount the engine and fit the x member like an escort with some crush tubes.

P.s thought I would drop in a blatant hammer picture for you hammer fetish guys

Well it has been a while since an update but the enthusiasm is back. Why did it drop ? The problem with putting escort suspension on an Anglia is the position of the engine to the x-member. If you want to avoid cutting the bulkhead the engine sits about 50mm forwards over the escort cross member. I created a cross member that did this but although pretty did work. The real issue was steering the steering joint goes through the starter motor so I moved the rack lower and to one side and in the end I knew the handling would be pants.
I came to the conclusion that mounting the starter motor on the other side would solve this and hatched a plan to modify an RS2000 bell housing to fit the 2000e gearbox then that were the plan died.
2 years later by luck I found an alloy bell housing for the 2000e and cable clutch “light bulb moment” it would cost me £200 but the grief it would save would be worth every penny. The beauty is that the bell housing located the starter in the opposite side well out of the way of the steering allowing me to put everything back ford intended (geometry wise). Although the bell housing is cable clutch this doesn’t concern me as I already have the Burton central hydraulic clutch fitted. A bonus was I dug a little further and it turns out the alloy bell housing is a replica single rail Capri one so as luck would have it one turned up for sale on here just a week ago for a lot less than the alloy one “Result” we shall see if my plan works.
I have been constructing a new cross member that can be see partly done in the last update. This will have no engine mounts and will bolt to the original Anglia holes. The engine will be chassis mounted so I can sit it exactly where I want and get rid of Frankenstein’s cross member.

Re: 21 years in the making wildo's105e

time for a quick update been busy getting the cross member sorted for chassis mounting

engine mount now tacked in to place

also the bell housing that is key to shifting the starter motor to the other side was taller than the original so this went to the machine shop to skimmed, luckily there was enough meat to do this.

tried to get the engine back in today but got stuck with the engine hoist and the height of the garage. Going to make a trolley so i can slide the whole assembly under the car and then lift it in.

also in the meantime also stripped the other wheels ready for polishing and paint and got most of the electrics sussed as i have to move the solenoid and power etc to the other side of the car.

got the engine mounts tacked up yesterday and got 5 mins today to final weld them. The engine can come back out now to build the rest of the chassis mounts on the car. Also trial fitted the exhaust manifold it fits albeit a wriggle to get it on

Thanks quite happy with the engine mounts and seem to making some progress finally after years of it languishing in the garage

Now i have sussed out the steering i can see the light as thats what stopped me before (plus other cars)

The engine is based on a 711m block on +20 pistons (from memory) not sure what that adds upto in cc all lightened and balanced incl flywheel. The head is a big valve unleaded head ported by nick and fitted with L2 cams with verniers (these came with the head and were in good shape) the carbs are dellortos and the timing was re- adjusted by aldon and i put an ignitor in. there also an AP clutch in etc.

I had it built in 2002 and it has only ever ran twice but sounded really sharp.

not done much this weekend but made some engine plates to hoist the engine out. The problem with mounting the engine off the chassis is that you need to remove the mounts to move the engine forward to get it off the clutch. normally i would have used the engine mount to attach the hoist chain on.

so made these plates up. support the engine on the jack remove the mounts bolt these on and throw the hoist on. Anything for an easy life.

Ok been a while but it has been bubbling away the engine is chassis mounted which was the biggest job and worked out really well. Starter motor fits now on the other side but it still clashed with the steering rack, moving the crossmember forwards by 10mm cured this good old chassis mounting made this easy.

The rest was just really refitting and trying to do get it neat in particular the wiring ect

    To this

Hopefully the video loads. Still a bit to do fine tuning etc and a leaky petrol tank to fix but I do feel pleased now as it has been 25 years to this point!!!

Re: 21 years in the making wildo's105e

its' been a while since the last update but it has been four steps forward and 1 back. Ironed out some of the niggles and got an MOT on the car and started to do some small runs just to get some miles on it and shake her down. Took it for a good 12 mile spin with my daughter through the country got 1 mile away from home and it broke down . Dam brand new £2 rotor arm broke new upgraded one resolved this and cost a whole £5. This highlighted the old 185 60 13 yokes i had save for it were getting cracks in them so a new set of 175 50 13 fitted and it looked a lot cooler.

4.44 diff now wasn't really helping so i dug out my 3.54 i had saved for 10 years and a new prop to fit the large flange on the diff. 2 miles later this was whining and clunking its bearings off so i managed to pick up a 3.89 with LSD from the parts section which came just at the right time. if in doubt keep throwing money at it inspected the 3.54 and all looks ok looks like the pinion nut may have been a bit slack, some time in the future a rebuild of the 2 diffs should give me a 3.54 LSD.

next is a good tune as up to 2000rpm it is a bit flat which may be the L2 rally cams. I have just picked up a second hand roll cage which may go in at some point (mainly for looks). Then i have some winter changes planned but in the mean time getting a few more miles so i can get used to people looking and pointing at me
