    Re: Captain Sensable YBT

basic, but a pillar drill and scales are good for testing valve springs, i tested a set of used std springs, most were ok but several were defiantly a bit down on pressure so we got a new std set of springs

a quick ccing of the head,

cr is a little over 8.1 so i will leave alone.

pic of a crank, no particular reason other than its the std/std un ground truftrided crank from the linford pinto

    Re: Captain Sensable YBT

skimmed head and block makes a bolt length check important, just to be on the safe side i took a little off the ends on the front 8 bolts, the rear to are sunk deeper in the block so i didnt bother

in order to locate the gasket i cut down some old bolts, build a ring of braze up on it and turned it down to suit the holes in the gasket, it nearly worked too! just two bolts located the gasket really well, only one drawback, the front one wouldnt come up through the head so by the time id turned it down enough that it would go through the head it didnt locate the gasket nearly as well, using a 3rd bolt helped with location

Oooo, excited face. Stunning work Graham, gives me so much confidence to see the lengths you go to even at this stage of assembly. C/R is spot on, which considering the skimmed head, block and valve cutouts is some miracle you've pulled off.

Why is there chucks out the side of the pistons, did the piston slip when they tried to do the valve cutouts?

just got off the phone to dave,

its survived a mapping session, which is always good, not forgetting this isnt actually a yb, its a pinto with a yb head!

i wont give the figures away,

but they sound quite good given the near std nature of the top end and a small turbo, which was only taken to 1.5 bar in the interests of long life

    Re: Captain Sensable YBT

Well she produced the goods. Once up and running it mapped like a dream and never missed a beat after 5 or 6 hours on the roller.

Made a smidge under 330bhp and considering the std cams, small turbo (T34/.48), vxr injectors and hybrid engine (2wd,4x4 + race pinto) is a fantastic package. Has a lovely torque curve and should be very nice to drive. With the lighter bottom end and race flywheel it doesnt take too long to get to 7500 rpm either!

Everyone was very complemetary about the build at the track n road and they said the results were brilliant.
We could have thrown more boost at it (under 1.5 bar) but it would have lost the drivability and not added a lot on the top.

If I do ever upgrade this engine, maybe after a couple of refreshes they said that cams, a bigger turbo and injectors would see a fair hike in power without a lot of work. For now though this has turned out exactly to plan and I cant thank Graham enough for all of his time, should be a lot of fun and not over stressed.

    272 lbft /6000, peak power at 328hp /6700. About 300hp @ wheels.

Revved to 7500, which was over 150mph even with the n/a spec diff

    Re: Captain Sensable YBT

its revving well, must be the head work, cos its not the cams or turbo making it rev. the fact its revving so well is a bonus, because that means the n/a diff ratio can stay, so with the great throttle response on track it should perform like its got more like 400bhp. but running the boost it is, hopefully it and the turbo will have a long life.

im sure that more boost could of picked up a big chunk in the midrange, although as dave said i dont think youd see any large gains to be had at the top perhaps another 20bhp, but when you have 330, going to 350 isnt that much of a gain anyway

Yeah not expecting that speed on track but good to see it wasnt nearer 130! Be interesting to see how it compares to cars with more power but longer gearing, ie the other 2wd cossies out there

Great job on the engine as usual Graham, it is a nice torquey responsive engine to drive I am sure, some of the cars with more peak power may have trouble keeping up with you Dave, the head porting is certainly a key ingredient, I think Graham goes well above the Real flow figures most full time head porters achieve

with the head i had to stop myself! i ported the inlets 3 times, keep going back and improving more, i only did a fairly basic job on the exhausts, reasoning once your past obstructive lump of guide boss, it was the turbo that was the restriction

    Re: Captain Sensable YBT

Sorry to bring up an old thread Graham, but would like to know how this engine got on with the pinto crank

Did it ever see a power increase or turbo and cam swap?

Did the engine do much racing?

    Any issues?

Got an engine to put together soon and im looking at a similar spec ported head, hybrid t34/48 housing and would like a puncy 380-400bhp on standard pinto crank if possible

    Thanks

its done a few races, but has never been cranked up for more power.

pinto crank is plenty strong enough, vizard was building 400-500 bhp turbo pintos using standard cranks 20 years before the yb appeared!

Any estimates how much beating 1.6 liter pinto crankshaft (66 mm stroke) will take?
I have YB head and blue injectors which limit the power now. Never dynoed it, so don't know if there is 270 hp or less.
