Re: The mrs Mk3 Capri 1.6 Laser

finished the car last last night ready for the show today. Put the door handle on and then put the clear film on the door to protect the door cards

next to tackle was the over spray on the windows in the door and with nothing but petrol to hand it took me ages!!!!!

    finally all done!

fitted the last of the black window trims too

well today was literally a wash out! We met up with lee off here early ready to go to the pencoed car show all excited and ready to display our 3 year projects only to turn up and find out the show is cancelled..............due to the field being unsafe! In other words the health and safety boffings have been out and said it was too boggy. So we then fecked off to have breakfast.

After that we split and me and the mrs went for a drive pretty much everywhere in the little cappa and all was well there were a few teething problems nothing major that would stop us.
    just :
TCA outer bushes fell apart even though they were fine the other day??????? so the wheel had a little slop
the wheel bearings on the rear have started rumbling
and the exhaust sometimes knocks on heavy bumps/pot holes

the mrs got a little annoyed as it did stall once or twice today too but as i told her this is just a testing period just to get the car perfect. She seamed to have forgotten it has been in a garage for 20 odd years.

any way here is a few picture mainly taken don ogmore by sea this afternoon

Re: The mrs Mk3 Capri 1.6 Laser

well there has a little improvement in the cappa since the last update, she has been treated to two rear wheel bearings that don't whine thier arse off
    new shaft puller

cut and smashed all the bearings off

fitting the bearings with my new £50 press

the whole car could do with a set of bushes too so we ordered a full set and i have replaced the front end so far

arb bushes slipped on. This 1.6 lazer has the good old 24mm 2.8i arb set up on it too, thank ford and thier grab what you can parts bin

after loads of fighting with the tca bushes to fit them it all went together well and tightened stuff up lovely

just the other day a mate offered to powder coat the wheels on the car as he needs a little practice.

so the wheels started like this

    wheels blasted

    powder coat going on

all coated in what they call a high chrome but it looks like to me that it is a standard ford finish on the paint

    a better picture

Re: The mrs Mk3 Capri 1.6 Laser

well seams we are going away to germany monday i thought it would be a good idea to do a bit of work to her for the trip.

first up was the horrible gearbox oil leak. First problem was the fact that nearly 30 year old gearbox oil was leaking onto the exhaust making it a fire hazard and secondly it smelt terrible!

    prop off

    old seal out

    new seal fitted

    new timing belt fitted too.

all that is left it to finish off the car by adjusting the headlights

i also checked the voltage being pumped out by the alternator as the volt meter in car was a little high i thought. so when i checked the voltage it was only pumping out 20fecking volts (the technical term for this) it was pumping out 18fecking volts when everythingn was on so we are lucky the car didn't burn out! so i had a spare in the garage but as always it wasn't that simple it was the wrong one! next port of call was my mate dan who also had the wrong one! When i was at dan's another mate griggsy was there and said i have one of them come down and take it straight off my cortina! Just put loads of photos up on facebook when your in germany and give it back to me when you home. SOUND!

just as i thought the capri made it to the ring with outa hitch!

we had a scare on the first lap when the rear tyres decided to go off half way round the lap! They are around 20 years old and i'm guessing as we worked them hard and put heat into them they just went hard because after the spin thy were leathal! So we had to change them out there

here's the video from the first lap

your poor girl sounded abit shaken up after that spin. those tyres were squealing like buggery though, hardly ever get mine squealing pushing twice that hard, you need dome decent rubber on there fella! you still running std suspension set up too? I can't remember what your running but she seemed abit tail happy and boatish round some of those bends, std set up on capris are dog awfull.

yeah she's not too good with stress lol, and the front tyres are yoko road tyres but the back ones were scrap. it is still on the standard suspension and is due to be upgraded to 2.8i struts with gravel inserts with 180lb springs at the rear the single leaf 2.8i springs with 2.8 standard rear dampers. I found the suspension quite planted compaired to what i have heard from the cappa although there is always room for improvement! the tyres are 185/70/13 so that might be where the squeal is coming from?

probably the wanky rear tyres squealing. capris do handle a lot better than the reputation they've been given but they also have a lot of room for improvement. 205's fit on them rims with a nice looking bulge. stiffer front springs make a huge difference with turn in and helps kill the understeer capris have, even be inclined to go 200lb, single leafs at the back are softer so help stop the back end kick out as much but I did notice more sway with the single leafs, some form of location kit or even a panhard will make a nice difference.

These are just parts i have hanging around the garage/coming off the 2.8 to improve the handling for very little money for the mrs. i am looking into the bolt on A frame kits for the rear i have heard they can bind up the rear leaf springs do you know anything about these kits? and i will also fit the 2.8 rear arb to help out. we will get round to fitting a set of 205's on her when she scrubs these tyres.

running an a frame and it made a good noticable difference on mine, wouldn't bother swapping the arb's, your'll find that pretty much all the lasers if not all the lasers were fitted with the thicker anti roll bars that the 2.8 had.

ok mint i will get round to it. Well the old girl is in bits again waiting on a rebuilt alternator and for me to readjust the tappets as they got a bit loud on the way home and one came loose. i thought the oil bar was blocked but that is fine. It is a good thing we are planning on building a fresh lump in the winter too as the cam is now starting to show signs of the classic bp285 wear on the lobe tips. Apart from that all is well.
