Mk1 Escort Wiper Spindle Caps

Replaced the wiper mechanism on my car the other day and have just found that the spindles that poke through the scuttle have a 7mm (approx) splined end rather than the original 5.5mm (approx). I assume the new mechanism is from either a late Mk1 or a Mk2?

As one of the replacement spindle caps is missing (The adaptor that goes onto the end of the spindle that then has the wiper arm ontop of it) I need a new one. Standard outside diameter but with the 7mm inside diameter.

20 days until scrutineering so need to find something ASAP.

Sorry ex I keep forgetting pictures.

The bit I so urgently need is the small round cap that the wiper arm sits over. You have the wiper spindle poking through the scuttle panel that has a spline on the end. A spindle cap (or otherwise maybe called a spline adaptor) sits on the end of that and then the wiper arm goes over the top. The old spindle has a 5.5mm spline on the end and teh new ones a 7mm spline.

Nobody in Oz seems to have any and I am quite desperate.

Will try to remember pictures tomorrow but I am pushing the preverbial to get my car ready for the tarmac rally on 21st August

Well I still have not been able to locate any of these!! Rarer than hens teeth apparently.

Whole new 2 speed Mk1 wiper assemblies don't come up for sale much in Australia that I have seen so I cannot even buy a whole new one (not that the caps would probably come with it anyway)

I right decent bloke in Western Australia took a pair off his car so that I could use them in my first event in August which was brilliant of him but alas I need to return them to him leaving me capless again!!!

If anybody is rumaging around in their sheds or at a wreckers yard can you take a minute to see if you can find some? I struggle to find a wreckers that has a Mk1 Escort in it over here let alone one that has this part.

Escort-tec told me that they had something but then stopped answering emails - I TRIED to use a site sponsor!!

You can have just the spindle cap or the whole thing, it#s up to you. Drop me a PM and we'll sort something out!

doh! The caps I need have an internal diameter of 7.5mm and fit a spindle that has a corresponding 7.5mm shaft

I looked at swapping over the whole spindles with a spare I have but the mounting system appear different so i could not do it I will double check that your one is the same as my spare. Appreciate your time on this but back to square one.

Seeing as I am having ZERO luck finding these items I have 2 plans. Firstly, do you think that some soft aluminium bar could be cut and drilled to make a replacement part? I am not sure how critical the splines are or whether 'bashing' the cap onto the splined shaft would be sufficient?

Second option is to take some 5.5mm caps (which seem a little more plentiful) then drill out to the correct size.

Such a small part is stopping me using the car

Are you sure you can't just swap the entire spindle out?

Not sure you'd be successful making or modifying caps, but if you have no other options then personally I'd try drilling out a smaller cap and pressing it onto the shaft - hopefully the harder steel of the shaft will extrude matching splines onto the cap if you size it right.

The 2 Mk1 mechanisms I have are very different in the way the spindle part connects to the other parts. I will take another look as last time I looked I was extremely stressed trying to get ready for my first event.

Well after 6 months of searching I still haven't found the parts I need.....go figure!!!!!

Can you all take a look at the photos in post #5 and let me know if you can help. Had a few leads but nothing yet. Even borrowed a pair from a bloke in Western Australia but unfortunately I have returned them now.

not sure if this will help but if you have landrover dealership near you landrover 110/90 have a little adaptor that you can buy seperate you might be able to adapt to fit (drill and pin through shaft) ebay 280719445607 or 250990163216 not sure if splines are the same but worth a try

Cheers hotrod. Those look pretty much like a pair of adaptors I bought from the New Zealand trade me website. Now I know where they got the idea from. Have not tried them yet as the grub screw will chew out the spline so once I use them I suspect there is no going back.

you may not need the grub screw part if you can cut that part off then you can drill through spline part and fit a pin which inturn will be held in place by the wiper arm when its fitted
