The Joys of Power to Weight Ratio ...

A lighter car will accelerate, decellerate and corner faster than a heavier car. Ron Kidell and I had a conversation at a round of the DMN Championship, he was working away at getting more and more power out of the Skylines engines, yet still they couldnt catch Rod Birley in the Escort Cossie, the Skylines still ran to Time Attack trim, glass lights, dashboards etc and they were heavy, very heavy, touching 800bhp, but weighing 1400kg (571bhp/kg) ..against rods 550bhp and 1050kg (523bhp/kg), only 50bhp difference on the power to weight.. so Rons cars only had 50bhp to accelerate that extra 300kg and he had to stop it too... and in a corner he had that extra 300kg trying to pull the car off the track..
The skylines went on a diet over the winter, next season the wins came.

The best example we have over here for PWR/Wt ratio is in the BTCC, the sucess ballast moves a winning car back into the pack, you can see the effect on the lap times from race to race.
