No signs of the mental hold backs he was complaining in Neste Oil Rally. I live very near that stage.

He won the 2010 Lahti Historic EM rally with a broken ZF. IIRC it was missing the 2nd and 3rd gear.

Biiiiig moment around 3.40!! To be fair driving a works spec Escort is slow motion for a WRC factory driver though. I was watching Juha Kankkunen out in a similar Escort at the weekend and he was the same...it's a walk in the park for drivers of this ability.

And yes...the ZF replica boxes (not genuine ZF units...) seem to be having big selector problems at the moment.

That is true. Also seen in former WRC driver Toni Gardemeister. He bedals his RWD beemer like no one else in the finnish (national) rally scene.

Re: Jari-Matti Latvala driving at 10/10's in a MK2 -on board Lahti Historic Rally - E

I have heard many people say the opposite before, that modern 4wd rallycars are much easier to drive than a mk2 ever is, I tend to agree with this, 4wd rallycars are faster but mostly boring imho, a good mk2 in the right hands will have a lot of big moments, even Loeb with his no frills driving would have more work to do in a mk2 to keep it going fast and between the ditches

A friend of mine on here that was at the rally said that 2nd and 3rd gear went in Latvala's car, yes it was a replica ZF that failed and then he broke the engine, even a BD will never stick those rpm's for long, that was mental high rpm's, no sign of a rev limiter cutting in that's for sure

No argument from me there Jason. WRC cars have so much torque and grip they must be relatively easy to drive in comparison to a 30 or 40 year old Escort...and I use the word 'relative' with caution. My point was that the acceleration, braking forces, cornering and overall speeds are so much lower in a Group 4 Escort compared to a WRCar...that it's a lot less taxing on the abilities of a driver who regularly drives at World Championship level. 110mph is 110mph whatever car you're in, but when it takes 3 times as long to get there it must seem relatively slow and less demanding on the drivers reactions. It'll seem more exciting in an Escort though that's for sure......

Having said that, 4 time world champion Juha Kankkunen was beaten fair and square last weekend by a West Wales farmer who hasn't done a rally in roughly 20 years...Dai Llewellin taking over a second a mile off him on average. Both in works spec Mk.2 Escorts, albeit Juha in a virtually brand new car...Dai in a fairly old and 'relaxed' car!!

I'd have to disagree with the 'lot of big moments' thing though...you're obviously too young to have seen Hannu Mikkola driving an Escort competitively at the height of his abilities. The man was completely uncanny, and the car would normally end a World Championship event in exactly the same pristine condition it started...bonkers quick, but undramatic and safe as houses!!

The factory drives just get so many hours in the seat that it is bound to show. Compared to the amateurs anyway. And driving from the notes is a second nature to them whereas the amauteur may not even get the notes right.
Has Loeb ever entered historic rallies?

Re: Jari-Matti Latvala driving at 10/10's in a MK2 -on board Lahti Historic Rally - E

Exactly Markus, wrc drivers have a massive amount of experience at high speeds, this is part of the reason why they are head and shoulders above the rest of the drivers when competing in historic cars etc, plus the fact that they are world class drivers

Never seen Loeb in a historic car or any decent rwd car, would be interesting to see how he would do in a mk2 like this, would be very fast for sure once he got comfortable with it

Wrc cars are not that quick! 3 times faster getting up to 110mph than a top spec mk2, not a chance lol

It was meant in jest....but from a standing start on gravel, I would have suspected that a latest spec WRC is twice as quick (if not three times...) as a 240'ish bhp Escort up to 110mph. I bow to your superior knowledge obviously...but that was just my observation as a novice to the sport of rallying.
