Re: Anglia Fascinante - 106E: Road car? Track Car? hummm??? Fun Car!!!

Here is my project it’s a Anglia 106E (LHD) that in Portugal for some reason people call Anglia Fascinante (captivating???):

I wasn’t easy to find a proper car, I was looking for a solid shell because I don’t have any intention to go on a looooonnnng restoration.

After some time I manage to spot this car and I can’t resist taking it home, some photos when I bought it:

    Driving home (280kms without problems)

    Upssss a little over 50...

Re: Anglia Fascinante - 106E: Road car? Track Car? hummm??? Fun Car!!!

    That indeed helped a lot...

But sadly Milton Race no longer makes the RACK AND PINION STEERING KIT in LHD

And on top of that I'm not around the corner to send the parts to modify so what to do?

After lot's of I found out this:

And order the back suspension and all the other shinny bits from Milton.

    More to follow stay tune...

Re: Anglia Fascinante - 106E: Road car? Track Car? hummm??? Fun Car!!!

I receive the kit from Alan

I don't know how difficult will be to fit but I think it as all the bits I was expecting to receive.

    The rear brake kit:

The interior of the car was striped:

    Out with the radiator:

And I manage to source a Ford 2000E - Bullet in good shape this will be striped and the internals change by the Quaife kit.

Re: Anglia Fascinante - 106E: Road car? Track Car? hummm??? Fun Car!!!

The Alan kit has a compression strut and adjustable TCA’s so the car was camber and caster adjustable, the problem is the roll of the body without the roll bar so I'm going to put 250lbs coils and this:

    A little more progress:

    The 4 pot brakes:

A few important pieces to the puzzle:

The Quaife kit for the 2000E gearbox:

The roll bar for the front suspension:

At the beginning I was going to fit a 4 calliper breaks that I have from another project but when I saw everything new that is going to be the only used piece so I sold the 4 calliper brakes and buy a Kit from Wilwood:

Re: Anglia Fascinante - 106E: Road car? Track Car? hummm??? Fun Car!!!

And now the part that we all are waiting for (I know I am )

    The engine fit trial:

Result the engine sits too low it need to go up 1” to clear the steering rack and needs to go forward 1” to clear the bellhousing in the tunnel and the webers from the bulkhead... not bad I was expecting worst.

Now I need one advice from those who “been there done that” what is the best modify the engine mounts to push the engine up and forward by 1” or modify the position of the cross member to forward the engine 1” and modify the engine mounts to push the engine 1”?

I think the easy way is to modify the engine mounts can anyone anticipate any problems with this?

And to end just a appetiser for the front suspension problems

Re: Anglia Fascinante - 106E: Road car? Track Car? hummm??? Fun Car!!!

I was convinced to try the engine like that (all of my friends want to see it running to 9.000rpm and me to )

The gearbox 2000E with the Quaife Kit (2.50 / 1.66 / 1.22 / 1:1) and the CWP 4.7:1 maybe can compensate some of the of cam (until 5000rpm )...

But realistic I'm thinking change the A8 to Kent 244 (3000-8000rmp), reduce the chokes to 36mm (rejet the carbs) and put in a 2" manifold 4-2-1 to give more low power and try to use it on the road...

Where it is the hp/torque curves:

Re: Anglia Fascinante - 106E: Road car? Track Car? hummm??? Fun Car!!!

The engine was fitted with carbs and gearbox to mark the exact spot where the engine will be placed.

This is what came out after lots of

As you can see the front was cut to accommodate the radiator.

This is the space between the carbs and the dip rail

We find you the cross member was to be lower by 3/4” to give clearance to the gearbox and the steering rack, we have to drill new holes for the side bolts and made two spacers to low the crossmember.

Another surprise was the gearbox mounting bracket that is completely off in the bolts to the chassis and in the space to the box, so new holes have to be cut and the bracket was to be cut and weld in the correct position...

And that is all for today...

Act II - The front suspension...

Today the front legs were mounted in the car:

The bracket wasn’t welded just to see how is going to sit:

The assemble of the Alloy Front Wheel Hub and the Wilwood Brake Kit:

To take some measures of the type of wheels and ET that I can run in the car I ask from a friend 2 Minilite 13x7 with Toyos with 185x60x13, and this is the result...

    And on the ground:

    Some measures:
The wheels were 13x7 I think the ET is 0 because it measure almost the same from the front and from the back of the wheel, with this the tyre exceed the fender lip by 1cm with this height I have measure 12cms from the lower part of the cross member to the ground and still have almost 5cm to the top lip of the fender:

    Front suspension II

Today I asked a favour from a friend to help set up the front suspension... the goal was to put the suspension with -1.5º Camber and +3.5º Castor and with 2/3 of the screw of the rose joint in the compression strut and secure the bracket in place to be welded...

    This is the result:

After this some more wheels to test just to see how they fit...

First Compomotive ML 13x6” with ET+18:

    Then Dunlop 13x5,5” with ET?:

Re: Anglia Fascinante - 106E: Road car? Track Car? hummm??? Fun Car!!!

Today the Anglia has to leave the elevator so we have to put some wheels:

The front arches are now cut to clear the wheel:

Just to see what is the weight of the car we have measure the car with 4 scales:
    Rear:

    Front:

    And the engine:

Today the sump was out to cut the draining channel we have put the engine in to mark things up and see what else have to be change...

And we find out that the engine mounts are spot on...

The position of the engine is spot on...

    The carburettors are spot on...

The radiator (after cutting the panel to clear the big header) is spot on...

The Ashley Manifold is spot on...

And the steering isn’t spot on but clearers the manifold...

    Some puzzle in the boot:

    That is all for today...

The wheels arrived it's a 13x6 with ET +10 from Ultralite and I’m pleased with the way they look... it’s not easy choosing things by photos...

I put them in a scale and they are 4,9kg which are much less that the Compomotive ML 13x6 with 6,17kg for example.

If you try (hard) you could see the 4,9kg on the scale

Re: Anglia Fascinante - 106E: Road car? Track Car? hummm??? Fun Car!!!

The gear box was finished it wasn’t easy because the instructions from Quaife differs between the things you have to do if you have a late box and a early one, so everything was double check, but in the end the gearbox is ready with the Quaife Kit and the Milton Quick Shift...

I didn’t like the blue gearbox with the red engine so a little paint and Black Magic

The Milton pedal box was tested and was by far the easiest thing to fit, 6 bolts and 5 minutes and the pedal box is in place...

Tomorrow the gearbox is going to be fitted with the engine and the starter to give the final location so the dry sump can be cut and everything can be bolt in place...

Finally the gearbox is in place:

And at last measure the length of the prop shaft and order it from Neil...

The wheels are in the car and they clear the brakes and the wheel arches:

And some pictures of the engine without the dry sump pan:

Re: Anglia Fascinante - 106E: Road car? Track Car? hummm??? Fun Car!!!

Yesterday I was hoping that the engine and gearbox was mounted to stay permanently in place the sump is already modified but again Murphy's law "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong" was confirmed ... and when assemble the sump we found out that the Cosmetic gasket was wrong after a few phone calls and a little Google we discovered that there are two versions for Lotus block:

SUMP GASKET SET: PRE-X/FLOW & LOTUS TWIN CAM (ROPE SEAL -1966)
SUMP GASKET SET: 681F X/FLOW & LOTUS TWIN CAM (LIP SEAL 1967 ON)

Now I have to order a old one (-1966) and wait for a couple of days, delays, delays...

On an more positive note I have buy from Ebay a pair of Sabelt Harnesses:

They still have the original box and that is always a good sign...

Well preserved after 5 years I hope they will get more used in the Anglia…

    Back on track…

After some delays the work is back on track, the sump was changed:

    The start engine in place:

The gear box cross member is in place:

The manifold is going to be changed to match the exhaust system with a flexible tube pipe like this:

The cooling system is taking shape...

Some more air to the engine:

    And the Pacet Fan mounted:

Still missing the oil cooler and the radiator.

The engine at last in place:

    That's it for now...

    A little update...

The oil radiator is in place (not the ideal) in a near future I’ll take the advice of putting it in the lower panel and put some holes in the front...

The water radiator is in place:

The water tubes are in place:

    The coil is in place:

And the remote brake fluid bottles are in place:

I have try a few positions for the hand brake and I like this one:

And that is it for today...

The water expansion tank and the oil expansion tank were putted in place:

The alternator was fitted to try to get it the right position:

And the throttle cable was connected from the pedal box to the carburettors:

    And that is all...for today

I have decided to take the advice and modify the position of the oil radiator where it is in the new position:
