Having seen some of his work , you've taken it to the right place Luke. Alwyn does a cracking job, and properly.

Re: Road Rally MK2 4 Door (XE powered)

The short answer is no. He's still having teething problems with the car. Driving home from the fabrication shop the car developed a bad missfire so he changed the plugs and leads and i went again but she died not long after of a foocked fuel pump.
So he bough a pump and filter and sh went again only to be greeted by his panhard rod tower detaching it's self from the car. It looks like who ever done it didn't get enough penitration into the floor pan of the car. I'm guessing when the springs were on it wasn't under as much pressure but as soon as the springs were gone the panhard was taking all the force.

Have you been following me fred haha. Not having much luck at the moment, only got as far as the start of bargoed mountain so far, so i think epynt is out of the equation, its a shame as i really fancied the hill climb. Looks like a watts linkage is now on the cards now. You still doing it mat?

Been trying to tidy up the car a little while I'm waiting for it to go into alwyns for the watts conversion. I gave the inside a quick paint in satin black, made up an ally centre console, fitted a few switches and made a drivers foot plate from some diamond plate.

Re: Road Rally MK2 4 Door (XE powered)

Things are starting to move along again, I found some black carpet in the attic so after a few attempts I got some fitted and put the seats and harnesses back in. The watts linkage has also been fitted at zakham engineering and the car is mobile again. It's booked in for a tweek to the map next week and then it's only paint to sort, I'm still undecided as to wether I should have a go of the paint myself or not.

I also re-sealed the sump with some new gaskets but its still seeping from the back so it looks like it is the crank seal

Re: Road Rally MK2 4 Door (XE powered)

Managed to get out for a bit of fun on an local autotest last week, car stood up to the punishment and scorching well. Was a good fun day out.

    https://www.facebook.com/luke.morgan.940/posts/10152042844894815

Before the autotest I noticed a tiny grind when the car goes into gear, so I took the box off to investigate. I thought it might be a clutch problem, but apart from low gearbox oil and some flywheel wear everything looked ok. I rang up ap to check the paddle clutch thickness and that was good so it must be something inside the box. While it was apart I converted the gearbox to "quick release", skimmed the wear from the flywheel, replaced the gearbox mount, fitted my arp flywheel bolts, replaced the thrust bearing and put it back together with some fresh box oil. After all that work the little grind didn't go away. Im not sure if its the nature of a 1970's gearbox or if its anything serious, if it starts to get any worse I will send the box off for a freshen up.
While the box was off I found a little pinhole in one of the sump welds, so I sealed it and that's finally stopped my oil leak.

Re: Road Rally MK2 4 Door (XE powered)

Put an entry in for a rally at the end of August so I need to get the car sorted. I made a start by having a go a the paint myself with some rattle cans from halfords, it's no show queen but it looks quite tidy. Next problem for me to tackle is noise. I'm waiting on a some dynamat sound deadening to arrive and I've also got some old barrel flanges welded to the exhaust so I can add more packing, not sure where to go next with the noise reduction, any ideas?

Not sure if I would class it as a twin box, it has the 1 large box (pictured with the flanges welded on), and a section of larger diameter pipe in the centre section of the exhaust

Took my mk1 to long life in Swansea for an exhaust last week as I'm doing the Targa rally down Pembrey and my old system was to loud. Had a S/Steel 2.25" 2 box system made for it. Said I wanted it super quiet and fair play it is. It did cost £290 though. The guy there did say if you pack to much material in to the box's it will reflect the sound and not absorb it, so don't go nuts.

I noise tested the car and it was 91db @ 2m so i think I'm going to have to get something professionally made. There's a place in cardiff called prospeed that a few of my friends have recommended so I've booked the car in there. I've also entered the targa, looks like its going to be good fun.

My brother is organising the Targa rally. He has a mk2 with a red top in it and as the noise is measured at the drivers door he has put noise insulation on the underside of the bonnet to reduce the engine bay noise (taken from the bonnet of a more modern vehicle).

I learnt a lesson on the weekend - a six linked atlas is not indestructible. I went out for a run and decided the dump the clutch with a tump of revs leaving a junction and managed to do this

I heard a Big Bang from the back (must have been the pigs head hitting the floor) and was surprised to find 2 bent link bars. We managed to bend them back a touch to limp home. Done a little research and they the clubman spec bars so I've now swapped them for heavy duty items. I've also got a set of bump stops to go on and I'm going to raise the back to stop the rear from digging in too much off the line.

I've also made a few noise reduction improvements, used some dynamat under the bonnet and had a new 2 1/2" system made at prospeed.

Re: Road Rally MK2 4 Door (XE powered)

    I finally did my first road rally in the car yesterday (Kidwelly targa rally), and it was great fun. It was a bit of a shock on the first loop with the amount of controls and code boards but as the day went on it got better and better. As for the car, it handled superb and what a great learning area pembrey was. It a shame I had a little trouble with the car which lead us to retire towards the end. Our first issue was the watts cover plate came loose causing us to loose all the oil. We managed to use some engine oil for one loop while the b373 was on the way and we got it sorted properly for the next run. The breakdown which put us out was the loss of a coolant blank which expelled all the water, and the car was so hot we couldn't get it repaired before we went OTL. I really enjoyed what we did and the car must be set up pretty well as we had 3 or 4 fastest overall times which I was pleased with. Here's a few pics from the day;

Re: Road Rally MK2 4 Door (XE powered)

I've finally rebuilt the box and got it back in the car. When I striped I down I found a crack in the countershaft drop gear so I rang quaife to order a new one and they told me they were not making them for twelve weeks. After a lot of searching I finally got hold of one from fred Crawford engineering in Ireland and the rebuild could commence with new bearing, new 5th gear synchro hub and new synchros where required.
