    dont understand

hi all just after some pointers.
just in the process of fitting a type 9 box, ive seen it working in a car i bought it from but as stood for a while. anyway i took the top panel off looked fine, i could select gears before i fitted to engine (pinto). but now its in, it will only go into 1st, ive got the clutch cable all hooked up but still makes no difference(being honest though the clutch pedal doesnt quite feel rite). have i made a mistake fitting it, i tought it can only go in 1 way? bit lost any ideas would be fantastic thanks.

Have you put the top plate back on correctly? If you shifted gears with it off you might have not located part of the shifter mechanism properly.

    Re: dont understand

Yes i put the top back on whilst the lever was still attatched and was fine. I then removed lever to fit the box and then refitted lever and then cant get gears. Weard. Could it be the clutch stopping me now its all bolted up because it was ok when it was seperate from the engine? Also should i be able to move the clutch fork by hand as it feels solid to me.

    Re: dont understand

I thought so. But the more i think the more im un sure. Either way the box as to come off and have a closer look. I might get a new clutch kit to fit also while im at it. After time without use can clutches stop working?? ecause nowing my luck it wouldnt last long.
Another job then the list gets bigger, hoped for a easy fix.

it is possible to put the gear lever in the wrong way round but i think it only prevents you selecting reverse.worth a check though

    Re: dont understand

Ive taken it back off a couple of times. I think it must be rite because the levers pointing backwards as it should. I will get box off and if i can get gears then its got to be the clutch hasnt it.
Cant think what else except clutch it could be thanks all.

    Re: dont understand

I had a good look at the plastic bit today. Hard to say if its ok or not as anyone got a picture of what it should look like. It did rotate so a flat bit was faceing up rather than a curved bit? Tried both it felt better when the cutved bit faced up with another part on the left. Sorry abit vague here on descriptions..
I'll try and slacken the bolts off abit over weekend, could the oil have degraded and would that stop me getting gears.
    Thanks again for all suggestions
