    leaking bleed nipples

fitted cossie 4 pots on the front of the escort on sunday, took it out for a run
and was not impressed about the same stopping power as the m16s if not worse
pedal is not great either so something is wrong somewhere.
went down the garage tonight and noticed all four bleed nipples are leaking past the threads.
took them out they look perfect, cleaned them anyway put them back in still leaking and cant do them up anymore.
the strange thing is its all four bleed nipples and not just the odd one or two.
so before i go any further obviously i have to stop them leaking but cant work out why all four would leak,
im going to put new bleed nipples in the weekend but not feeling confident this will fix it,
    any ideas please

do they feel nice and firm going in? possibly someone has fitted 3/8 ones instead of m10?

check to make sure the threads have not been helicoiled either, i had the same thing with some rear calipers, the bleed nipples must have been stuck in, so they must have got drilled out and helicoiled, i never noticed until they kept weeping all the time, even though they felt tight.

I thought the pointy bit at the end was supposed to make the seal when tightened.
Wouldn't have thought they could leak if that was the case.
(obviously I was wrong if yours are tight and still leaking)

    Re: leaking bleed nipples

i have just had a thought...is it possible they are not leaking past the threads but the fact i have had
them out and opened them up to bleed them... that the thread in the caliper is full of fluid and gives the impression
they are leaking, as everytime i wipe them dry they are wet around the thread after a while,
when it could just be they are sealing and its just the excess fluid working its way up the thread?
i think the fact i was expecting a massive improvement over the m16s and they are not, that once i saw the bleed nipples getting wet
that i immediately assumed that was the problem.
im thinking of ignoring that, keep wiping them dry and eventually they should dry up and look elsewhere why the brakes are still crap.

    Re: leaking bleed nipples

0.625 MC is ok, I take it the nipples are pointing up and your bleeding both sides ?

Are they definitely leaking ? i.e not just residue fluid, you can use brake cleaner to remove residue and then they will look dry so you can tell.

If they are leaking have they been replaced with a different type ? i.e. wrong seal angle... just a thought.

    Re: leaking bleed nipples

the nipples are pointing up and im bleeding both sides and i can bleed them fine until i get just fluid and no air bubbles.
im not 100% sure they are leaking'but i have wiped them dry with tissue paper every day since sat and everytime i go
into the garage and check they are wet again.
the pads front and rear are all new and the pistons move freely and dont leak,
the pedal is almost to the floor, if i pump it,it doesnt improve, and if i hold it on hard it doesnt sink to the floor.
the pushrods on the mcs have very slight play when the pedal is up and as soon as i press pedal even by the tiniest bit they start to move.
i have put ptfe tape on one nipple as a test, (not the best thing to do i guess) but im getting desperate
and that one is still dry
im waiting for new bleed nipples to come in post and if that dont improve things then im stumped.

    Re: leaking bleed nipples

have you rubber hoses on the calipers? If yes, take an automatic plier (sorry, dont know the right word!) and squeeze one hose to block oil to one caliper.
then try the brake pedal again if it reduces its travel.

    Re: leaking bleed nipples

i build a lot of braided brake hoses etc for formula cars, one of the tests we do on the cars if we are unsure of a leak is to apply pressure to the brake pedal then strap it into position, this shows up quiet quickly where your leaks are, if you have any! maybe you can wedge something between your seat and brake peda? we would normaly leave it for an hour or two, but if there is something wrong it usually shows pretty quick
