Re: 2L Pinto- Crane Roller Cam- Weber 50's

The cam was timed with 6 degrees advance to give better low down torque at the expense of peak power. If it was retarded a few degrees I think that the 200bhp would have been possible.

The dynamic compression ratio was also a bit low so a higher compression ratio or a cam with different timing would have perked up the figures quite a bit also.

Re: 2L Pinto- Crane Roller Cam- Weber 50's

Nice work Tom very good porting work on the head, 13 to 1 would add a lot of torque all the way up with that cam esp low end but she's going like stink as it is with a nice spread of power

Well done! Did you end up sourcing the cam blanks? Is this the profile you will be making copies from? Where do I sign up?

    Hello Shaun,

Sorry, I meant to respond to you about the cam blanks.

This is the original cam that I wanted to get copies made from. The thing about this cam is it could be better. The timing is not optimal for 12:1 compression ratio so I had to advance the cam a lot to get the dynamic compression ratio in the ball park. With the same duration and different timing it would have 5 or 6 lb/ft more torque and the revs torque would hold on possibly even longer to give better peak power. The other problem with this cam is it is cast so there is a slight risk that it may break with the high spring pressure and revs.

I was able to source a few places to get custom billet cams machined and a few to do cast roller cams. Jason (RWD_fords) on here will be doing a cam kit in the near future which should be a flyer with the correct head and exhaust setup. I will go through my email and post the cam companies in the next while.

I have not actually driven the car but it does go well. Pulls from quite low revs all the way to 8000.

Hey lads, This is my motor btw

Just said id ad to this, Top job by Tom and Jason on this engine, 2 very knowledgeable fellas ! It really feels and sounds like a 16v.
It pulls from practically noting, ok its on huge carbs so naturally enough it will bog down on wot below 2000rpm after that though it really is a gem.
A wee confession.......rev limit is 8200 really is nice to have them extra few revs between corners if needed.

Vid of it on the rollers, didn't limit it in this one.

Cheers again to the lads, cant wait for the next development of this to try and keep the millington boys on their toes

*EDIT* HA HA, you bet me to it on the Vid Tom

Re: 2L Pinto- Crane Roller Cam- Weber 50's

    Thanks Enda,

Really great to see the engine in action and some good results. A little more torque at low revs would have suited the sprints better but the wide power band gets the car going well on the rally stages. Some great driving on the sligo stages.

Video of the car with roller pinto in action this year in Mayo.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3pS4nri4k1g

Potentially 10th overall but for a puncture on stage 6 which lost 4 minutes.

Also lost a bit of time here after passing an EVO on the stage

Re: 2L Pinto- Crane Roller Cam- Weber 50's

Small update on the roller engine which still lives and gets better.

Engine recently rebuilt and after a few years of trouble free service. Needed a new valve and some rework on the port filler. One piece had dislodged and disappeared out the exhaust.(not good but no damage done.)

Engine is now on throttle bodies

Not sure if the video can be seen but the following is a link from Facebook

Only have the dyno plot from the first run but finally made 205bhp and 166lbft torque.

Re: 2L Pinto- Crane Roller Cam- Weber 50's

    Hi,

Due to the cam design (Low dynamic compression ratio) then engine would run on standard unleaded without too much difficulty. However for safety it was normally run on 101 Octane.

Recently the engine has been updated to 2.1L so the compression is up to around 12:1 so 101 all the time now.

Recently the engine has been dynoed at 217bhp and 181lb/ft. Very happy with that
