    Darrian S2000

I have been asked to do a thread on my latest money pit !

So I will start and see how much interest we get, I really don't have time for every nut and bolt but will try to keep a basic record for anyone who interested..

So its out with the old

Yeah ok Paul - big boots to fill!! What engines have been in it then over the years?

I didn't know Steve Furzeland had a Darrian.

So today has been busy... I have collected most of my bits together and taken it all to its new tempory home !

As my good friend Andy Fraser at Promotive exhausts will be taking the major part in the engineering and fabrication side of the install.

    We have
    Darrian T9 rolling shell
    Honda S2000
RED throttle bodies dry sump system Race tech ECU etc etc
    Hewland NMT

So its just a case of throwing it all up in the air and hoping it drops in the right place

    Hi Pugrwd,

You have stolen my dreams. Almost..... I wanted to fit a Turbo S2000 into a Darrian. I've bought a Eurocar Mondeo (space framed Mondeo from speedway classes) to fit the turbo engine in now.

Hope you can have a lot of fun with this super car.

BTW, a Zakspeed Capri is one of my other wet dreams.

Andy here. Paul, you've pretty much described the whole engineering process. Will be following similar principals as used on my Darrian but with perhaps less TIG welding and more MIG to cut down on time and cost.

Bellhousing to be machined from solid block of alloy using CAD/CAM method. Will post pics as it happens.

    Hi,

Please, next time come over so we can share some idea's. You where at approx 45 kilometers from my house. It was a Hewland box for sale? What company you where after in Belgium?

BTW, you can find S2000 bellhousing for the T9. Maybe you can fit these on your gearbox?

www.euroracing.be/index.html was where I bought the box from !

The car uses a transaxle so unfortunately that bel housing type is unsuitable, so we shall be making a bespoke item

What engine spec. will it be? Standard, tuned, turbo ?

I'm currently building one 2,4 Ltr S2000 on 2x 48 Weber DCO/SP (programmed ignition) for a customer and one 2 Ltr turbo engine which will be used in my own car.

Hi the engine will be standard 2ltr with dry sump system and racetech ECU so hope to see a little over 250bhp

Do you know of people using the atmo 2.4 stroker kits successfully in Motorsport ?

    Re: Darrian S2000

If you use the standard engine and throttle bodies setup it will even be hard to see 240 Bhp. Sure not 250 + . Sorry. I've build several years ago. Standard is less than 220 Bhp, with throttle bodies average was 235 Bhp. I used long trumpets to give it some torque because they really have no torque. But it answers well to inlet length.

I've never build them in 2,4 Ltr before but I will let you know what power and torque. Engine will be on 48 DCO/SP. Hoping to increase the torque.

    Re: Darrian S2000

I know of a guy in the US that builds them up to 2.7 with 400whp for drag racers, that may be a bit extreme but you could build a reasonable 2.4 stroker with his rods, Mahle pistons (so they don't eat away at the FRM bores) and an accord K24 crank (with some machining); combined with cams and jenveys ~300bhp isn't that far off with decent torque as well. A few guys on the S2ki forum are running these strokers successfully in road and track cars.
The engine builder's company is called inlinepro, some valuable info on there.

    Re: Darrian S2000

2,7 Ltr, something new I can dream of.

I would never use the Honda cylinders in his original form. As a minimum, put thin slaves in them. Original Honda S2000 cylinders are like lottery. Don't relay on them. In the beginning we used Mercedes replacement slaves (a guess build to repair old diesel engines ? and still ready available and very cheap). Was working very well, even in my turbo engines.

Please note, if you replace the cams they get even more peaky. But maybe not be a problem when using a very close sequential gearbox.

    Re: Darrian S2000

I normally see 220bhp on std set up but have 2 cars running t/b's that give over 250. What they need is a cold air box for the intake , they hem-rage power with just the foam type air filter. The other area is the exhaust manifold, again if its wrong you will lose 30bhp.

Used to own a Darrian F9 some 20yrs ago , great car , and take it from me, very strong in an accident. Currently run a Davrian Dragon MK8 for my son.

    Re: Darrian S2000

Ah Vince I take it :-)

I have the RED race tech set up with the extra spacers on the throttle bodies as stated said above and my research finds these engines seem to respond to a good length ( bit like the girl friend ). Would you agree ? about the engine that is ;-)

Air box is something I have not thought about yet but thanks for the input.

Not really found much info on manifold sizes lengths configurations etc all I have found is people seem to think Honda know best and stick close to the standard manifold dimentions,
What have you noticed about good ones you see on the rollers ?

I hope not to find out how strong the tub is !

    Cheers PC

    Re: Darrian S2000

Some years ago (I think 8 ? maybe longer) I have tested almost all inlet lengths to compare. I can check my dyno graphs and see what was working best for torque. I do remember we even tested silly long lengths. And inlet diameter was no bigger than 48 mm.

I also made a special exhaust system those days. It was a modular system, I could test any length, any diameter and any combination (4-1 4-2-1 in any length configuration again). So we could find the best exhaust length and diameter.

The engine was on the dyno for a very long time during that winter. We finally found a very nice torque curve (not as high as we found in engines like the Nissan 2ltr SR20) but much better as it came from Honda. Must say, I never saw 250 Bhp. More like 235, maybe close to 240 but sure not more.

I would never fit an airbox unless it is internal VERY big. It knock down pulse tuning when to small inside, just like as standard plenum.

    Re: Darrian S2000

I can only go on what i have seen. Customer ran one in Ford Puma RWD and had brought a manifold from a Honda specialist . All i can say is it gave an increase. Yes the std one is very good and i know of a couple of exhaust specialist that have got it wrong trying to adapt conventional thinking to a manifold. It also needed some adjustment to the maps .
Same with the air box, the difference between foam filter and it, were significant enough,to make it more than worth while. Sorry i don't have any figures at home and am too busy to post at work.
