    T56 gearbox

Is it possible to repace a T5 box with a T56 on to the T5 bellhousing or would a bespoke housing have to be manufactured from the two. Has anyone used this box on the back of a yb. thanks tawny.

it will fit directly to a t5 but depends what the t56 has come out of as there are a few variations in the main case

    Re: T56 gearbox

Thanks for the reply, my T5 is getting ready for a rebuild & I have a spare that wont engage 4th gear so was wondering if a T56 swap was possible or just to have one of the boxes reconned. Is the T56 a better box with the higher ratio 6th gear. Mine seems a bit low geared for motorway driving in 5th but I am running a 3,44 diff ratio. Just thought that the higher 6th may be better than going to 3,09 & raising all the gearbox ratios.

Mustang, Corvette, Aston Martins and many more - big and heavy and most of the 6th gears are unusable.

The Aston Martin Vanquish was the only one I found to be any good at the time.

cool, seems like a good idea if you can get it to fit in the tunnel, looks massive compaired to a t5.

    Re: T56 gearbox

question will it fit in a tunnel that used to house the T5 without any mods other than gear lever position.

You cant say, the box is a lot bigger, if the T5 is quite tight then definitely not, and even if its quite loose... probably not

sounds like its going to be all gearbox tunnel inside the car & little room for anything else, I may stick to the T5.

    Re: T56 gearbox

as clint said, 6th gear is so tall that most engines cant make use of them. they drop the revs so low you've not got the torque to pull the car along - and have you seen the price of em?

    Re: T56 gearbox

GEARS are offering a high ratio 5th gear on a rebuilt T5 gearbox fo £650 which leaves the first four gears as standard but with the higher ratio top gear. any comments on how this will affect rpm in top say at 70 mph. I am running 3,44 on 13" wheels .
This may be the answer to my original T56 enquiry. tawny

    Re: T56 gearbox

you didn't mention tyre size so lets assuming your running 205/60 on 13's with a 3.44 diff

on the old standard 5th gear ratio at 70mph your engine will be turning 2850 rpm

the new 0.7 ratio at 70mph will mean your engine is turning at 2500 rpm

quite a nice diffence in my opinion, it will also gear your top speed in 5th at 7000rpm from 172 mph up to 196 mph, but your'd need a damn good engine to pull you to them speeds , so it really is just a cruising gear

    Re: T56 gearbox

    standard 5th at 70mph = 3050rpm
    new 0.7 ratio 5th at 70mph = 2650rpm

    standard at 7k = 161mph
    new 0.7 at 7k = 184mph

I've got a t-56 in my capri - and it's bloody huge i can tell you now! Not very wallet friendly either!

Have a look at my build thread and you can see the size of it...

Thanks for all the info good buddies, it seems to me that I need to stick with the T5 and have the high 5th fitted. I need to talk to GEARS about having my spare gearbox checked over & this 5th gear thingy fitted.
