Hello mate,
Not again?!
Hello mate,
Not again?!
the shell is good it was just skim off the curb. the front end just pulled to the left and i couldn't stop just in time and bounced off the curb, i'm not sure if the arb snapped before or after the impact. basically everything that bolts on the front end is bent but the chassis rails are fine. so i am stripping the whole car down and treatng her to aload of goodies mainly better brakes!
bloody hell mate, I think your a destined banger racer or something.

how the hell you do the back in when you hit the front? lol. or did you go side on?

That axle should do the Job
is that an atlas beside an english?
bloody hell, the difference in the size of those half shafts is huge
yeah they are the 18t splines mind not the standard 16t atlas ones so uprated again.
i've now got a right panic on too as the axle i bought was bent so my mate took it back so i now have to buy all the stuff new and shorten my 2.8i axle too and rebuild the car ready for germany in 12 days!!!!
so here is my dilemma to date
i need to fit the
front arb set up
tca's
front brakes
fix the buckled wing/floor
shorten and build up a brand new atlas axle
fit rear brakes
fit a 4 paddle clutch
rebuild my fucked gearbox
fix the engines oil leak
fit a new heat maitrix
fit a new throttle cable
with only 12 days to do it all in before we go to the nurburgring.
a couple of days ago i took my axle to be built up with the new gripper and the bearings and as soon as it was out of the car the axle builder said that isn't right it's bent. so i am now shortening the axle off the capri tomorrow to take to the axle builders thursday so i can have it back early next week when i will hopefully be finished everything else. I have ordered brand new 18t 2 piece shafts along with rear wheel bearings and brand new cosworth calipers with new rer disks too they are on their way to me as i type. then when i pushed the pistons back i found out one was seized solid
so today i started by stripping the box down and it was ovious what had happened once i had had a good look at it......and it is abit of a mess in there.
the baulk ring had broken up in two places and had started to go in another letting 2 of the 3 synchro blockers out for a walk from 4th gear
the blockers seam to have came out of the synchro hub and went in between the gears on the input shaft and the layshaft 4th gear
this mashed up the gears very nicely and pitted them both beyond fixing
luckily these two gears are right over the in box magnet and it seams to have caught most of the broken off bits saving the rest of the box ao they are on thier way from quaife but at a cost.
so with the box all stripped down i removed the struggling road clutch and replaced it with a nice new paddle clutch
i knew the clutch was going to struggle with the extra power but decided to keep it in there to get my use out of it. Make it easier to run the engine in and to protect the english axle untill i fitted the atlas up

box in bits!
so with the clutch and box problems on their way to being sorted i needed a fix for the under powered brakes and the missing axle. Since i have fitted this new engine they are struggling to cope so i have upgraded to AP's they arrived from the squires brothers today.
people have been saying i am mad to pay that much for a set of brakes and i thought i was too for a little while but when they turned up today and i fitted them it is the most straight forward high quality kit i have ever fitted to any of the cars i have built. So well worth saving up the beer tokens for!
all fitted up
tomorrow i am going to shorten the axle casing
thrusday i will be dropping it off to be built up and i will be fitting the arb set up and hopefully the tca's will be here by then too so i can finish the front end.
looks like you have alot of work to do fella! lol, you know you can built the atlas yourself, they're not that hard really with the right tools.

yeah i have looked into it (seen a thread graham wrote, and looked in a few other places too) but for £100 i haven't got the time so i will just drop it off to the guy and pick it up in a couple of days. I can make more progress on the car in 2/3 hours than i can building the diff into the axle.
Loads of work to do too but i will make it although it will be a tight one!
well today was d day for shortening my axle casing for the atlas
we started with an un messed with 52" 1.6 capri axle
started by drilling out the old 25 mm plug welds in the back of the pig and then made a horizontal press along with some gentle heat
tubes out and ready to be shortened
tubes shortened
i then set them up in the lathe and turned them down so the tubes were an i.f fit in the the pig. it was time to press the tubes back in then, which i have no pictures of
a little bit of heat into the pig again so we could stick weld the casing to the tubes
all sorted and straight as a die
the axle is 47.25" in length as i want to run 8" wheels and i'm sure it is what fostek make their baby axles to for un arched cars.
i have written this and made it sound easy but it took ages and worked out great in the end.
jesus dude, your 1 of them people that can break the unbreakable, or just shit luck, but i love the way your like'' fook it ah fix it'' wicked, top job,
I need a baby atlas (well I will one day) and I like Wales lol Great work again bud and good look for making the trip I'm sure you'll make
When I grow up I will have a MK1 Escort
I must be all growed up now then and paying for it!
well today i ran around the moto factors looking for the parts i need to finish the car and was hoping to build up my gearbox and have a go at fitting it........nut quaife haven't came through with the goods yet so they will be here tomorrow and the box will be rebuilt and refiited.
the axle went off to the axle builders today thanks to lukem30 for dropping it off and will either be finished tomorrow or monday, hopefully monday as i have enough to do over the weekend as it is!
so i couldn't just waste an afternoon i fitted up the whole of the front end apart from one steering arm and the arb ends
Well today my mate jordan finished the front end by tightening up what i hadn't finished. Still need a mak2 steering arm and don't know where to get them from and quickly!
I have been to pick the axle up. Thanks to lukem30 it was at the builders thursday and i picked it up after work today! One hell of a turn around.
So we tried to fit up the shafts and soon found out that they were too long being for a 48.5" axle. So we had to chop them!!!
So we cut them off, be it wonky mind but we condition padded them square and made them look pretty.
1.6 capri 2.75 cw&p with the fripper all in.
With disks on. We built it up to check the length on the complete ae and it is only 2" wider i think.
So as the quaife parts had arrived today and the other box parts came tursday so i have cracked on with that whilst jordan put a longer cable on the throttle.
Finally donw thanks to my ofher mate dan for helping me deal with the tricky circlips
I'm going to fit a rough ally bellhousing too as there is a massive weight saving to be had from if.
I have been worried all day that i would have to turn down the rear hubs to take the disks but this is not true

Going great guns John
the gearbox and starter motor is all bolted on and wired up i got the car running today and run through all the gears and it all works great, the front brakes are all bled up although i eill be doing them again to get the last bit of air out of them. I am still struggling o get a steering arm for my rack at the moment so i might have to buy a whole new quick rack and fit that! I have changed the oil and filter too as i was still running the mineral oil and it is more than run in now so i'm on the fully synthetic.
quick picture of the car with the axle on
the proper bearing spacers so the end plates don't pull in.
the leaf spring mounts tack welded on
well that didn't last long the axle is off again! ready for final welding of the leaf spring mounts and the caliper mounts
Is this what you need?

well considering i wasn't going to do anything in the garage tonight i have done a bit more
tonight i fitted up the calipers
calipers in place
some people will notice that the caliper carrier is touching the disk but i will get spacers made up that are 2mm not as thick
8" wheel fitted up to check clearance for the calliper and the the hand brake cable
the calliper is upside down too you might notice
i bolted the carrier to the disk and then the bracket to the calipper using spacers to keep the whole set up square and inplace when i tacked it. i'm also going to do this with final welding
looking good now!
back on the car before final welding to check everything is clear.
and my little helpers were back in the garage today not dan and jordan though
