it was all good fun tbh i have never built a proper bottom end before so i have never gapped the rings and worked out all the bottom end clearances so it was something new. just need to mount my rad and fit all the coolant pipes also refit the exhaust. I am also waiting on a few things too.

    fuel filter
    fuel line
new wiring loom made by my mate
    spark plugs

hopefully i can fire her up this weekend!

Not a problem I am expecting a minimum of 250bhp maybe even around 260bhp with a shit load of torque. It will be about a month until I run her in though.

Well things have moved on since I have posted last. My mate who used to work on the aircraft looms as a leccy laughed at my loom and made me one which is a waste on this car. I would upload photos but j am struggling at the moment.

well the car has been up and running for a while now.

I ran the cams in on it. As soon as I started the engine up I turned the idle screw up so it would sit at 2500rpm, that was scary on it's own as it just sat there on the spot for 20 minutes. I wasn't too keen on this but she made it

I had a new loom made out of raykem wiring by a mate and it is superb.

new plugs and water temp sensor

old sierra fuel pump I had lying and a new filter in my nice shiny bracket

I then decided to take a break and take the 2.8 out to an autotest in the local quarry

Re: Project more door aka the sh!++3$ for autotests, drift days and road rallys

the fuel pump packed up well it lasted long enough to run the cams in and died on the first outing. So I robbed the capris and fitted that. I wasn't taking too many chances so I bought a new one and need to get round to fitting it.

I also had the starter motor rebuild as the solenoid had failed once again! I had the one solenoid back with the rebuilt starter and it was a rusty mess it wasn't cheap but it looks like the motor factors were not replacing the solenoids when they were refurbing them.

So I have been running the engine in and have gone through about £60 worth of v power ultima so far but I quicky relised the base map wasn't quite right as the engine was struggling to pull off from 0%-22% throttle and 1500-2500
rpm. So was my mate drove round a local industrial estate in this range I looked for holes in the map or fugure that didn't look quite right. I am happy to say I only made very small changes to the map but the big flat spot has now turned into a small flat spot now.

I have dialled the cams in today too it didn't seam to make I big difference I think it really needs mapped to suit the engine.

I super glued a pointer and the timing wheel to the crank pulley and worked It all out from there.

I know i am like a child i just can't help it. Somw girl said it sounds like a lawn mower! Ppffftttt an expensive one any way!

What do you think the power is going to be then? Torque and bhp, hopefully a few people will guess on this thread as it is pretty flat at the moment.

It's had a 0.040" overbore so it is now 2341cc there are some similar specs out there and they are claiming from 250/280bhp the higher numbers are just pub talk. If i don't hit 250bhp at the fly i will be dissapointed.

in that case 256.7bhp and 223ftlbs of torque (torque figure was based on what your last engine produced with the restrictive exhaust as I have no idea what these sort of engines produce torque wise ) btw what happened to that poor capri, looks like it's been rolled too!!

    Haha. Take a guess here

I haven't got a clue what power these engine make at all tbh. This is just something I made up because I was bored. A guy who rally's one of these engines and had his set up at the same place I go has a 220bhp one 2.3 rs2k cams home ported head home ported head and roller bodies and he said my engine in it's current state of tune would tramp all over his and I didn't rev it over 5k!

Also the Capri is the 2.8i I bought ages ago the one where the car landed on its roof after landing on the garage roof it was in. It has a very strong engine! She might be doing an autotest this Sunday. The escort will be there for sure though!

the new engine and box have had their first shake down
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpPmR1ESFGE

at the end of the autotest we had a drag race. Up the airfield that is, against a mk1 focus rs, mk7 fiesta st,2 mk5 fiesta st's anay.d the mrs in my mk7 derv.

After a very poor start being dead last even after the dirty derv, struggling to get the power down through my tiny 175 drift tyres i cogged second but was still struggling with traction. I finally got grip and i was slung shot past the derv te two on st's and past the mk7 st with the new 1.6 ecoboost engine i was quickly pulling on the focus rs too but we ran out of run out of runway. so i am very excited to have te engine remapped and some yoko 21,s put on to aid grip.

Re: Project more door aka the sh!++3$ for autotests, drift days and road rallys

Ran the car up on the rollers today my and my mate james are mapping it as i have always fancied it. Here is the original run on the 'base' map

As i thought no pull at all under 4k which i could feel and a good pull to the end of the map 6500rpm

so we started mapping 1500rpm 2500rpm 4000rpm and 5000rpm we picked a couple of sites across the rev range just to see if what we were doing was correct and making power and it seams to be working. We mapped all the tps load sites for the stated rpms too so a fair bit off mapping done for amatures.

there are massive power differences and drivabilty low in the map but there is still that nasty flat spot (yet to be mapped) between 3/4k. Power at 6650rpm was 200bhp and at 5680rpm 208n/m, the engine was still pulling like a train too but there is more to come top end too. Not bad but these will improve with alot of time spent on the map.

We are renting out a set of rollers and my mate kiwi is teaching me how to map lol. It is quite hard but really intresting. On the dta you can use a control box called knobs and you can pick an rpm and tps field and then change them both at the same time to give maximum torque in that part of the map by ramping up the ignition advance and then trimming the afr with the fueling duty.

Yeah it is crap when it hits 3000rpm. We just chose a couple of rpms that were spred out to see how much of a difference the mapping would make. Next time we are on the rollers we will start from the bottom and work our way to the rev limiter then we will hopefully see some big results.

Well shes done and it is mad!
Well mapping has been finished by me and mainly my mate we are not experts by a long shot but this is what we went from to how it is now.

    First run

mapped certain sites to see if we were making a difference

all finished (as far as we could go on our knolage) not bad for a home build hero

pulls like a train in every gear the ratios make the most of the power band as it only drops 2500rpm in every gear apart from 4th/5th 500rpm. We only went to 7000rpm full throttle and around the lower tps loadings to check the fueling but we didn'y advance the ignition and played it safe it is easy to make it go pop at that rpm. Videos to follow.

It did make 220bhp at the fly on road tyres but one blew out ao we changed them back to the A021r tyres and it was 205bhp at the fly then.

very good results , not trying to bring down what you've achieved in the slightest as your results are very good, but do you ever plan on getting it mapped by a professional at a later date? things like ignition can make a big difference to power and torque.

he was ment to be but me nd my mate have always been intrested in the idea of mapping our own engines to get a better understanding of how it all works. I can now say i have built and engine and mapped it myself. If vince will have a look i might ask him to improve on our map in the future, but we will see.

i might have vince have a look at a later date but at least for now it is running well with plenty of power. if it had been a standard engine we would have pushed it much more but the stakes are higher. one thing i have noticed is the fue consumption is a hell of a lot better too!

I built one of theses over 10 years ago now it made 187hp @ wheels and 175ft.lbs of torque here is the spec ...

    St rods ARP bolts
Standard pistons @ 12 thou of the top .... around the 10/5/1 cr
    All balanced
Head reworked with Kent Cams cant remember what they was now ... reworked the standard cam wheels to verniers
Weber Alpha Management kit 45 throttle bodies
    Tony Law Manifold

One think that i noticed is that i got rid of those horrible balancer shafts and chain drive within the sump.

The car was great to drive with loads of low down torque from limited memory around 175ft.lbs

thats good power! I think i have made a mistake on the 48mm bodies. I might try the 45 webers to see if i get an more torque than i have now as i don't think i will loose top end power by doing that.
