Project more door aka the sh!++3$ for autotests, drift days and road rallys

Basically as most of you know i recently smashed up my poor old escort van recently and after much though about what direction i was going to go in i decided i have too many projects on and i need to get rid of atleast one long term one. And this had to be the van.

So here is project shitter she is a 1600 sport 4 door! Which i understand is rare in it's self but if someone can shed more light on this that would be great. Basically i needed an escort to skid round in whilst the mk1 is being group 4'd so this car will be used for autotests, track days, drift days and road rallys in the end.

So here she is in all her glory.

looks like some kids have jumped on her in the past. Lol.

    The van being stripped.
And a lock to lock a drifter would be proud of.

Oil cooler was lucky not to be smashed to bits!

Engine and box ready to be dropped out sunday

the manifold has had the mad paint treatment that keeps temps down in the bay too! I have tested the mrs one and it keeps te heat in well!

it dows show up every little dent that was made when he shaped the manifold with a hammer which i think is awsome!

Yeah he wanted £1100 for it! And i told him when i got there if you want that for it i had better go home. Lol. Didn't set me back too much in the end so it's all good. I will have to change the 2.3 to a 2.0 for road rallying too which isn't a problem. Lol

Yeah around 400 so i'm told. I was worried as i thought they had given me a 2 door logbook for the car. Haha.

Made loads of progress today too. Everything moves along much quicker with a man or two anyway!

Re: Project more door aka the sh!++3$ for autotests, drift days and road rallys

Basically i pulled the engine, box, suspention, arb out off the engine bay with the help of my mate and his manitou or as i call it the man or two. We lifted the body off the whole lot with the axle too. It was time to bring in the shitter now. I only have pictures of the axles going on but the engine was put on a pallet truck and pushed under the front end of the mk2 that was being lifted by the manitou.

Up and out with you! A sad sad day! But it has to be done.

    Axle and running gear out.

    Time for the more door!

Well every time i look at her she is much much worse! I can shake the drivers inner wing and the bulkhead moves! Because all downt the seam of the bulkhead is rotten.

The conversion into the van was of the bolt on system so if i ever wanted to remove the running gear and put it in another escort for some strange reason it would be hassle free.

    Has it?

That would be because my mate doesn't hang about ehen it comes to doing things so i didn't have much time for photos lol. We lifted the front of the shitter up and used a pallet truck to put te engine, gearbox, struts, arb all in the hole and lowered the shell onto everything.

One problem is i don't know what what thread metric/imperial holes the xmember to the chassis legs so it is held on with two big fooking g clamps atm.

I dont want to rain on your parade but what year is your car? I think the 1600 sport 4 door was only built up to 1976, which is probably why there are few survivors.

Shame about the van by the way.

She is on a 76 plate.

She seams genuine enough to me. doesn't matter if it was a 4 door tein cam ect as it's still going to have a hard life with me.

It is a shame about the van but thinking about it in the long run i have lost 3k in 2 1/2 years which isn't too bad really.

Re: Project more door aka the sh!++3$ for autotests, drift days and road rallys

thanks for all the kind words guys! It should be a month before she is completed but the mk1 shell will be in fabrication shop by then too!

There are problems in paradise already though! fecking escorts!

The tunnel had been roughed about in the van to fit a t5 in the past so i'm told. so i made the box fit right up in there and the mk2 one is standard so my x member doesn't bolt to the chassis and the gearbox mount is miles off the floor.

so i started cutting to see if the old one would work by cutting the top off and moving the box into the void but it isn't happening.

So i popped 10 mins down the road to lloyd'ies and got this bad boy which i tried out over the old tunnel and it will fit great

Well the tunnel went in tonight thanks with the help of my mate morsey who loves abit of cutting and welding. She isn't pretty which is a shame but it's damn strong!

    Cut out

    Welded in partly

Won't be long and it will be getting put together at a good rate of knots.

Well i got more done tonight a fair bit too. I got all the tunnel seam welded in and the gearbox and engine in place ready to drill the holes floor and weld i. The strengthing plates with the captive nuts in.

First things first the best part of the welding

All fitted and chopped for the gearstick. Got a little carried away cutting though

As you can see it doesn't meet the trans tunnel like it should as the old peice was mullered so i chopped it out.

    Strut tops are the originals!

    The 'new' exhaust manifold

It's all about the 13x8" rins in standard arches too!

And the last picture of the day
