    Oil pressure gauge fluctuating

    Hi all,

I have a SW mechanical oil pressure gauge on my 20v 4age. I have noticed at around 60psi the needle hesitates/flickers between about 55-65 psi and then continues to climb as it should. Hard driving it flickers furiously around the 60ish? psi mark. I have an oil cooler, big wing gated sump and an accusump connected.

    Any ideas, similar experience?

    Thanks

No idea but will see if I can find anything.

Ive not got a gauge on mine at the moment Steve but from your description it seems

You mention you have a oil cooler on the car so are you still using VVT or has this been removed?
I only ask because if VVT is still been used and this relies on oil pressure to work effectively, surely the oil cooler is negating the efficiently of VVT.

Im thinking the flickering at 60psi under hard driving is where the VVT is been activated assuming you still use it.

Didn't think of that. Yes still using the vvt - would an oil cooler make the difference to the pressure and effect the vvt then?

    Cheers

    that could explain it

Well I've been looking at 4age 20v oil pressure problems with coolers but 95% of what I've looked at have said that the oil pressure should remain constant although you will have a slightly lower oil pressure due to pressure losses in the cooler since the thermostat never completely closes. I'm working on the basis that the sandwich plate is a thermostatic one and reduces cooler flow when 'closed' so that the engine doesnt have an in rush of cold oil when the oil reaches the temp to 'open' the stat. This would mean that VVT could be a little sluggish in comparison to a 4age without a cooler but I wonder if its that noticeable...

I haven't got a thermostatic sandwich plate, so pressure should be constant?

I'll dis the vvt solenoid and give it a blast up the road. See if it still chatters.

    Cheers

P.s performance doesn't seem affected at all and always good pressure even after a stage with thin oil.

    Re: Oil pressure gauge fluctuating

It will never be constant in the sense the oil pressure will vary with rpm but with a cooler it will be slightly lower than an engine without and shouldn't fluctuate unless its the VVT solenoid that causing it as suggested

So, if I do find it's the vvt solenoid causing it - is this an issue?

    Re: Oil pressure gauge fluctuating

I shouldnt think so, if there was a real issue with oil pressure then the accusump will discharge thus protecting your engine cos thats its job

The annoying thing is that my car and engine is in so many pieces I cant just go and see if I get the same results

You be able to hear if VVT is working or not Steve. Firstly the relay will click on/off when you the rev the engine and under accelaration the engine note will change too.

I assume the engine is still running the VEMS ECU and same map when it was in Ali's Chevette? If so then I know Ali mapped the engine himself and his settings would determine if VVT is activated at all or if there different from how the factory settings work.
That engine is definately a good one and the most important thing is its got good oil pressure. As Dean said, if theres a problem, the accusump has that under control.

I like the sound of this car. Get some pictures up

@ Deano - Come on m8, get that car finished. I need a quick car to race against

Has been remapped since, vvt is working - makes a big difference to the figures...and the view through the side window!

160 bhp from a Silvertop? Impressive figures. Who done the mapping for you? Looks a nice car by the way

Iclandic chap who used to work for cosworth did the mapping. Cheers not sure about the bloody mud flaps I have to run on TARMAC rallies though.
    Will post up the graph.
