Alright?
I've got a bit of a project on my hands and I've been told by one of the forum members that this is the place to come for solid technical advice. I have an old rear engine, rear wheel drive Skoda. My original plan for the car was to put a race replica body kit on, nice wheels and to tune up a 1300 engine from a more recent Skoda. The car had to be able to get around the Norschliefe in less than 10 minutes. Well, it's got the body kit and the 1300 but what with one thing and another, the plans have changed. This is how the car looks now.
The car is a mid 70s 110R with a 130RS body kit. It looks nice enough sat still and corners pretty well but power, brakes and ride are pretty poor.
The plans changed quite a bit last year when this came up on ebay. It was a bit of a rash decision, but this is what's going in.
It's a Mazda RX7 Turbo 2 engine connected to a Porsche 930 box. I bought it from a very nice high performance nut in Essex. The bloke was a proper rotary enthusiast and told me that there were about 200 horses in it. He also said that there were another 200 or so that could be easily freed. That's a big plan change!
Things took a turn for the complicated when Raymond Marble (Graham) on here made a few comments and posted a link to his build on another forum. This made me think of upping my game a bit. Up until a few days ago, It was going to be a fairly tricky rear engine installation. The other option was to build a mid engined car. Graham pointed out that Skoda did that kind of thing once in the 70s with the Skoda 2000Mi. There is also a bit of Skoda rotary engine history with the MB series. Basically, it is feeling sort of right to go mid engined right now. Well, Graham said the quality of technical advice here was very high. I think I'll be needing plenty of good technical advice.
I am a competent marine engineer but I have got bugger all experience with this sort of thing. I live in Spain and rent a biggish lock up with a tip top TIG welder and fabricator. I work 2 month on and two month off so I should have time and resources enough to pull of a good build - with a bit of guidance!
Obviously, I need to stiffen the body. I think space framing and integrating roll cage and suspension are pretty essential. Where do I start with that though? My plan was to fit a beefed up front suspension.
I have 130RS replica rear wishbones and Gaz Gold coilovers to go on there. Any opinions on this? I was thinking of Compbrake for all the braking.
That's it. Very grateful for any constructive pointers. Thanks for inviting me over Graham, you be pleased to know that you're now not the only Skoda in the village.
