    Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Well it has been a long time coming and I know it is not to everyones taste, but the time has come for me to get up off my sorry ass and the get the escort back out on the road with it's new engine.

I will update this as I go along, but here is the engine in the build stage:

It was built to go in a sit up and beg Pop, hence the exhaust manifold design, this is going to be chaged as it is far to big to squeeze in the inner wing! I can't take the credit for building this engine, I was given a lucky chance to own it for a very good price so snapped it up.

It has a all the right bits for some good numbers, cosworth crank, wossner rods and low compression pistons, lots of porting work on the head, sensible camshaft, Holset HX35 turbo, 70mm throttle body on modified EFI injection manifold, big injectors, all run by Omex 600 management.

Will update with some more pictures an information later, Fuel lines and AN fittings all ordered up ready for mounting then will drop the engine in an wire up.

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

This is the car it is going in:

Fuel lines will hopefully get run over the long weekend and get the swirl pot and fuel tank/pump setup sorted out. Still on the hunt for a gearbox though, either a cosworth t5 or a 2wd MT75, gearbox tunnel has alredy been made bigger so hopefully it'll go in without too much hassle.

Got a baby atlas (hopefully) to go in at the rear and then wil be linked up. Wanted to keep 13" wheels but I want to have some decent brakes so have opted for 15" wheels to get some decent stoppers on the front. I picked these up for next to nothing, need a refurb but 7x15 rears that fit perfect and 6x15's for the front.

    Wilwood 4 pots:

This is how it is currently sitting waiting for the old bottom end to be removed and collected and the new engine to be dropped in:

Well 400+ would be nice, but for the moment I am aiming for a nice round 300bhp with a round 1 bar of boost, but like you say I think it will make quite a bit more than that!

What is yours running at the moment Gustaf?

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Mine is just collecting dust at the moment...but...some day :-) Need to get the body ready.

I was running just below 1,5 bar (around 1,4 steady) the last season, but with a more standard head than what you have. That should have been a bit above 300 bhp. I suspect the top end and 2,5" exhaust strangled the engine quite a lot though. Your manifold is a bit shorter, may well give better response but perhaps can be a bit restrictive at high revs, you will have try it and see.

Start at 1 bar but you should have no problems running 1,5 if you only get it mapped properly :-)

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

The manifold is not staying as mot is too big to fit in the inner wing with the Turbo bolted to it sadly. So a new one is on the cards very shortly.

Well fingers crossed it'll make good power, 300 with relative ease and maybe of I am brave enough quite a bit more.

In your photo, the pipe on the fuel rail with the fitting is made out of thin wall mild steel tube and needs to be well supported (it normally connects to the standard fuel pressure regulator bolted to the manifold). Mine fatigued and cracked at the joint with the fuel rail after a couple of thousand miles and sprayed the engine bay in fuel. Fortunatley I got away with it.

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Well a bit more progress has been made, old bottom end is out and new one is half way in although the sump is fouling the x member, so a big wing cossie sump is on it's way to rectify this. Finally picked up a T5 cosworth box for sensible money just hope it's not a bag of spanners!

Think I will leave the jap look to the jap cars, a removable slam panel is required:

An empty engine bay that needs a good clean and tidy out ready for the T5 and pinto to drop back in there:

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Finally got some progress, the steel sump that the engine came with doesn't fit over the x-member without some serious re shaping to it. Did a bit of searching on here and managed to get hold of a properly baffled and gated sump (one of Doug's G!( Fabrications ones) via Clint (thank you Clint!) that fits the engine a treat and looks the dog's back wheels as well, shame it'll be hidden away!

Dropped it into the car but still not quite fitting, the x-member has been trimmed back but it is now hitting on the steering rack so needs to be dropped down a little but but going to try it on the RS2000 mounts as I think the engine mounts on there are not helping matters!

Now have a bell housing for the T5 box, will get on with fitting that once I know the engine is in properly and sits where it is supposed to be. Getting there slowly but surely.

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Well it's been ages since I did anything but getting bits together for a rainy day to get them fitted on the car. Picked up some rather nice bells and rotors for the front, 300mm should stop it quite well with any luck?!

That is a 15" wheels so caliper cleareance might be a little tight maybe!? The disk has slipped a little on this one but gives an idea.

Engine is now in on the x member and just awaitng new TCA's to arrive then hopefully i can drop it back on the floor to see how it sits and then get the box and exhaust fitted up. Slow progress but getting there just need some warmer days to spend in the garage.

Correct me if I'm wrong why are you using cosworth pistons designed for 16valves as they have cut outs

ARP stud and nut kit on a 205 block isn't the best they cracked my block.

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

I bought the engine complete and built that was one of the pictures i got too, so not sure if it is one that goes with it or not, I thought it strange too but not had the head off to see, there is no valve to piston contact and and have seen and heard it running too.

I think it was more belt and braces with the stud and nut kit, think he was planning on running some big boost through it.

Looks like he just used cosworth racing pistons, makes no difference that it has valve cutouts anyway, the pinto valves wont come near the piston unless you put the wrong cam in. I Remember when this engine came up for sale, lovely engine, was going to or did go in a 103 pop i believe. Btw if the manifold doesn't fit and you want to part with it, let me know, as i'd be interested in it in the new year, also have a stainless log type manifold that may sweeten the deal that will fit your bay better aswell.

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

I am not sure if that is the right picture, as the head gasket has tabs on it, the one one the car now doesn't have the tabs on it!? As you say I am sure there is no difference or issues as the engine was running in his sit up and beg pop, it only has a mild cam in it, so if they are the pistons then hopelfully there are no issues. I am reluctant to pull it apart just to check it.

I may part with the manifold as it doesn't fit even with the turbo off (which is bloody huge). I need a manifold with an external waste gate fitting, as the holset is externally gated.

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

While waiting on a few other parts to arrive I thought I better get on with the front end, new brakes time.

This is the leg as it was removed from the car ( will be cleaned and painted and some new alloy hubs to go on there, this is just a mock up fit )

Slightly larger disc fitted to the hub:

We now have a caliper added, wilwood superlites:

6x15 wheel fitted, was a bit unsure as the discs are 300mm and the caliper is quite big too, but I think there could be a bigger disc in there if needed:

New V's old slight size difference lol

All packed away and back in the boxes now untli the TCA's and alloy hubs arrive and i have cleaned up an painted the legs. Hopefully have a big update once the weather improves.

This is going to be nice, I like a boosted pinto. Brakes are going a little overkill lol but you gave to stop I s'pose!! Any more engine progress? Whats the plan for management? Did you or your brother used to have a blue mk1 Capri..? I recognise your car if so as I brought the Capri! Also, for the guy who asked about the cossie pistons, there's a big hint as to why they're being used, it's bolted to the exhaust side of the head lol

    Re: Mk1 Escort Pinto Turbo

Well even though the calipers and discs are brand new and never used they haven't cost me that much really, less than the calipers would cost on there own, and I want it to stop well, can't have too much braking force!

Management wise it has an omex 600 to run it, came as part of the package and it's well up to the job. Engine wise it's on the stand waiting arrival of the tca's and hubs then it'll all go back in for the last time hopefully.

Well it's been a while that's for sure, moving and other life happenings put the car on hold but have finally got around to getting it finished!

Brakes are all sorted and bolted on now, with the aid of a small spacer the wheel clears the caliper, only just! :-)

manifolds are sorted, going to use a small turbo and cast manifold to get some miles on it then use this one with the holset attached

Nice to see something different in a Mk1.
Yon lump of steel is a much better way to hold on the calipers as well, over cable ties

I think the steel brackets for the calipers will last a bit longer than the cable ties! Hopefully once my gartrac parcel arrives anyday now it'll be back on the all 4 wheels and I can get some pictures in the daylight of it.
