NZ Escort lovers (and not the type you pay to love you back) need your help.

Hey there, need to know about the Hilux complete rear Diff/axle setups, particularly the RN25 model.

I really wanted to keep the English rear end in me RS2k but to beef it up to the 3J LSD and Shafts as per GoldMember its going to cost around 2.5 grand last time i looked into it. Currently it has standard shafts and a Quaife ATB solid crush washer and was setup really well, I am running a Cozzy YBT T5, and its always in the back of the mind to go easy on the clutch off the line! No one wants to go easy on it off the line!

Are there any still around and will it fit under the rear of a standard arched Mk2 running single leafs?
Is there any major fettling to do to get it in there?

What do they cost and who the hell would i call to find one?
Are they LSD equipped and all that would need changing woud be the ratios to suit?

    thanks in advance!

You'd be hard pressed to find one these days. Just get a later model hilux one shortened. Can pick up a complete diff with LSD head for a few hundred dollars usually. Can do a disk brake conversion with toyota ae92 fxgt rear callipers and Audi 100 disks fairly easily and cheaply which retains cable handbrake.

Though if you want something lighter than the hilux G series go for a toyota F series if you can find one. Theres one on trademe at the moment.About 20kgs lighter overall I think.

Thanks pe-arce, i didnt think there would be many around, plenty of late model ones though. Do you have an idea of what sort of cost to have one completed ready to fit?
Generally it wouldnt be neccessary to enlarge the Diff tunnel? Sounds like a great disk brake conversion!
i heard that some classics go for the B1600 diffs also?

I have checked out that one on Trademe, will wait for photos and ratio information.

Just saw a link that POO SLINGER had posted back in 2009 via an Oz website about hilux diffs, not sure how i missed that one!
    Cheers Jonny.

Not sure on what a completed one would cost. Last time I looked into it shortening cost about $700. Not sure on what you'd pay to have the leaf mounts moved. Then you'll need new U-bolts due to the larger diameter tubes. And also new plates for under the leaves to match the bigger U-bolts. Tunnel mods will be dependant on how low your running. Which part of the country are you in? I'f your nearby I could help out with a few jobs if you go ahead with it.

Another thing, I've heard that the hilux LSDs are not so great cause they need shimming up so tight they're nearly locked for them to start working properly. There are better LSDs available for the F series diffs from what I've heard.

I run a 1977 ford courier/b1600 diff. Loads of ratios, everything form 70's to 2005 mazda and ford utes fits.
Currently have a 4.1 LSD from a 2001 courier in. Has 30 spline axles and a 8.8inch head!
Measures 1380mm drum to drum. I took this set up off and now have sierra cosworth disks and ford laser tx3 turbo calipers on the rear.
It has 4x108 stud pattern on the axles already, just needs to be drilled out funnily enough!
Leave platforms are near bang on too

Yeah there's a lot to it really, shortening, u bolts, plates brakes etc etc and all those little bits and bobs add up too.
Interesting about the hilux LSDs too, my quaife atb I have had it shimmed recently due to the tightness (or lack of)and the torque bias feeling that you get is horrible, I haven't yet had a chance to see how it performs. I like the sound of the F series, will have to call some wreckers and start figuring out cost.
Thanks for the offer with help, unfortunately I am in Wellington so rather a bit of distance between us, I bought my RS from a chap in ChCh around 9 years ago now, awesome drive home it was!

Do you have an Escort also?

Now that sounds the biz, these will surely be as rare as the RN diffs are, if only I could find one of these.....at the right price of course!

What car are you running this in mate?

That sounds pretty awesome, it will sound wicked and the MX5 box should be nice and quick shifting being modern. You may want to talk to LowNSlow i think he runs a turbo charged FE3 in a massive bubble arched Mk1. Was hoping to meet/catch up with him at one of the manfield track days, never seemed to be there when he was, doh.

Hey Mk1_Oz, cheers for that, I actually was in contact with those guys before I decided on the cozzy transplant a few years ago, was looking at their complete Duratec install kits, good guys, will have another look.

    Regards Jonny.

Me again, is it only the 1977 model that is very similar? I have found on a 1979 and 80 model but from the pics it looks like they are 5 stud so i am assuming they may be different, dont want to find out the hard way!
