    duratec not what i expected

hi there just had my fiesta with a 20 duratec engine mapped and power run and did make the power i was expecting it made 212bhp the engine spec is
    wiseco pistons 12.5 comp
    forged rods
    jenveys 45
    kent dtec 35 cams
    310cc green injectors
    ported and polisled head
    4-2-1 exhaust manifold

Is that at the crank or at the wheels and is it the big port head?

some of the big power duratecs are on much bigger bodies....raceco one was 54mmIIRC. What exhaust are you running?

Re: duratec not what i expected

I would of thought around the 220 mark with cam and ignition swings , as far as i can gather exhaust manifolds are a make or break bit of hardware for this engine .....

Still if its making that power it must be near on 185 at the wheels not to be sniffed at...

that would suggest to me the cams are ok but something else is wrong.

how much did you remove from the head? ive heard its easy to take too much out and make them flow worse.
all the high powered duratecs ive seen have very big bore exhaust manifolds

4-2-1 grouped differently thow cylinder 1 and 2 grouped together and 3 and 4 together intead of 1 and 4 and 2 and 3 which most 4-2-1 manifolds are and the rest of the exhaust is 2.5 straight through

its the second one ive done i port the exhaust ports to the gasket size didnt remove loads a metal and smoothed the rest out and match the inlet to the throttle bodies am not sure what size the exhaust manifold pipes are

Yes it does sound a little under powered for that spec of cam and compression. I use 48mm Jenvey's which are a bit better than the 45mm but you should still be seeing around 240 with this spec of cam and compression even on the 45mm's
As Graham says it could well be your exhaust, as it does make a big difference, but again I would have not thought quite that much.

Not saying you are wrong, but it is not hard to get 250-260bhp out of this engine with very little effort

Re: duratec not what i expected

if you group 1 &2 then 3&4 into 2 into one it doesn't work at all

years back when i bought a holbay cosworth it had a manifold done like for the previous owner
it never pulled right sounded wrong had flat spots all over was basically horrible
i bodged it back to a std style 4-2-1 manifold as i was rallying it the next day and it transformed the engine

ive seen it done on bike engines, the wrong grouping tended to make more power low down but trashed the top end

Re: duratec not what i expected

on the cossie it had a flatspot about 5k that lasted to 6k were it felt like you had removed 2 sparkplugs
then it came back on but was hesitant all the way up

couldnt belive that the guy i got the engine off rally'd it like that for a few years
it did take a second and a win outright at ditton priors on the bodged up corrected pairing manifold tho

it will be interesting to see what this duratec improves like with a new manifold

Re: duratec not what i expected

by way of reference graham blackwell got 199bhp on std internals, so its likely yours is well down on power the cams and the compression,
i cant say for sure the manifold is the problem, but its the only "odd" thing about your engine spec. was it a "proven" design as run/tested on similar engines to yours?

they said some of th btcc cars have grouped like this and awould get better power at high revs which is turns out to be a load of crap had a look at power graph and the bhp and torque go high intill about 4000rpm at low revs then drop off the build back up

I think that the whole point of having ports 1&4 grouped together in the manifold is so that it promotes scavenging at high revs..... and I would think that grouping them the other way round wouldn't work because 1&2 aren't on the same stroke :S?

I think a phone call to Tony Law is needed .... ive used his manifolds to good effect expect to pay 5-600 notes for anything any good.

Did you ever figure out if something was robbing you of power Lenny? I have a similar build so am interested to learn from any issues you discovered.
