Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Thought I'd start a little thread about my Mk2 as the Mk1is somewhat disappointing me with the progress at the moment Right I'llstart at the beginning and bring you all up to speed as if you’ve got this faryou’re interested :lo:l. I bought the car as a birthday present to myself backin 09 but I hadnowhere to put it so I had to clean out the girlfriends garage which took threedays so from this
To this with a nice grey painted floor.

Had to make a round trip from Ellesmere Port toBurham-on-Crouch and back only 252 miles or 4 hours 10mins each way Anyway once it was back the garage wasn’t finished so the car was off loadedand stored on the drive for a while

So in the garage it went as soon as it could and the obligatorygrill and light trial lol

The car had had a lot of work by the previous owner and wasfairly tidy and solid (haha it’s a feckin escort!!)

So my original plans where to create a clubman spec Grp4 andtry the work myself and even though the car came with a safety devices cage ithad been modified at the back and wouldn’t pass for stage rallies any more soit was removed which allowed better access. A few pic’s of the rear mod of thecage which was a right pig to cut out

Then I started to put in the 4 link boxes and larger reartunnel

It also came with a load of decent gear such as coiloverBilstein’s, 4 link kit, poly bushes etc etc and I’ve also bought some more bitsover the years for it, here’s a little selection of bit’s to go on it

Right we’re nearly there or todays do at least. I wasn’thappy with the drip rails so removed the wings and repaired one side lol

It was about this time all interest was lost as the rallyingstarted to slow down and I bought the Mk1 escort
As said this has been resurrected due to the Mk1 taking solong so the garage was cleaned of its new collection of sh!$e and I’ve upgradethe electrics to allow proper work to happen so my current work space

I even took it to work and made this last week on nights lol(don’t laugh I can’t work metal at all)

And here we are up to date so for today’s attempt, startedoff welding up some trim holes in the rear nearside quarter

    And all dressed

Also removed the cage to A pillar strengthener so I didn’tkeep catching it and hurting myself

Even manage to paint the fuel tank in between other jobs

It doesn’t look too bad well for a me job anyway
As said the solid nice escort is still hiding some grot so Idecided to tackle this

I cut all the rot out and made the repairs I had to do it intwo sections first being the floor repair and the second being the outer skin whichwas a bit tricky but it done now and it’s solid if not very pretty

And that’s it the plans for the car are to be used andabused but most of all enjoyed it’s not going to be a beauty contest winner butit’ll be solid. Eventually it’ll be gold and black with 7” banded steel’s and the 1700 xflow from the Mk1 for now Ihave an Xe to go in at some point
These are soon to be on their way to Urchy107 for banding

That’s it for now any comments etc welcome

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Got a little more done today managed to get the welder round the side far enough to fill the rest of the near side trim holes so they are done also the previous owner had the boot on pins so the near side holes were filled but I didn't take any pics

The main point I tackled was this

A nice hole were the battery tray had been removed? Anyway it was a little tricky as it has compound curves so I tried a different technique and ended up with this after a lot of swearing

Its not too bad and nothing the slightest skim of filler can't straighten if the desire takes.

It was about this time the text argument with the girlfriend put an end to it so not bad for an hours work as I have to empty and refill crap in the garage to work on the car

Managed to buy a sierra clutch and speedo cable which means its going 5 speed and wheels bearings today which is the upside but the downside is the missus is still not talking to me and the cars in her garage

Did a little bit more on the old girl today and wish I hadn't after 4 hours of searching through the parts I have got I found out I need loads of bits for the doors as the internals have gone missing and I have not seals apart from in the channel rubbers and there seems to be lots of other things missing too These projects are fun..... But tomorrow is another day so let see what that brings. Anybody with any mk2 escort 4 door bits pm me with what you've got

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Well Classic ford was a great show once again and some parts purchased and others sort of ordered from GS Escort top service from these guys Well had a few hours this week and progress slow cant seem to find any mojo but progress is progress

Got some bits cleaned and painted (no particular order)

Obviously got the front suspension off and stripped down

And started to sort out the bits that will be going back on but I had issues with the alloy top mounts for the coilover bilsteins had to put packing washers between the spring top and the top hat inserts other wise the nut wouldn't tighten anything up, is this ok or what needs doing??

Also had to modify the snap off steering wheel boss adaptor I made as I had tapped M6 and the wheel uses M5

    Easily done though

Also cleaned up the front passenger wheel arch and put it in etch ready for some truck bed paint

Hopefully more updates soon and I'll have a plan on what I'm doing lol

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Got a little more done to day as said I had a plan and it almost worked lol.

I wanted to start getting some of the bits I've got on the car so I started with the nasty strengthening kit I seemed to of acquired (if anybody is thinking of getting this kit saves your money and get a proper one!) Anyway started with the strut tower lower strengtheners and there a great fit

Started to modify and at least get them to fit the hole

    And the difference

All welded in and coated both sides were done and look erm ok!

Decided to have a look at this truck bed liner stuff as it looks appealing so I got some Halfords own just to see what its like so decided to do the wheel arch and spare wheel well and to be fair it looks pretty good so I'll be going with an idea I had for the interior
Anyway the wheel arch and spare wheel well pic's

Seems the camera has picked up some floaties in the air on this one

Also got the passenger side bulkhead to inner wing strengthener again a great fit

Used the kitchen fitters trick with a block the size of the largest gap and traced down the sides to get it to fit but then took some measurements and realised it wouldn't quite work so adjusted to suit not a bad fit in the end

    And the difference

All welded in place and give it a coat of etch primer too after this pic.

And there's more said I had a plan lol
The car will (maybe) end up on the stages so I want to carryout mods now so they are done for later so the holes in the chassis rails needs plating
    The holes in question

    Template made

    And welded in both sides

And all made nice and etched on both sides with etch primer

Also cut off the left overs on the bottom of the wing where it attaches to the sill area and it was pretty much none existing where I butchered it taking it off anyway pics (forgot the before pic lol)

Again all cleaned up and etched but no pic but you've all seen this before

Thanks for looking and hopefully more soon

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Got back out in the garage to day and got a little more done on the MK2 Well it was the only option as nobody wanted to go and watch the BTCC with me a Oulton Park

Started off with the other side (drivers) chassis rail to bulkhead strengthener and as the per the passenger side it needed heavily modifying but got it to fit and all welded up ok

I'm having a few problems with the car lifting at the front which is bloody annoying its only doing it as the car was on 4 axle stands and I took the front suspension etc off but left the rear axle on and the solution for now is........ A hoe!

I also rubbed down and repainted the passenger side A panel on the inside as it was a little lumpy with bits so all nice now but I didn't take a pic.

I then turned my attention to the strut tops as the car had small holes and everything else I had was for big holes so I had to open the gap up. I tried with an air saw but it just annoyed the hell out of me so a quick root in the daily turned up a die grinder and a pack of carbide tips for said die grinder noisy slow and rough but we got there in the end

Anybody got any tips on how to relocate/place the holes for the new larger top mounts so everything lines up as it should??

Last job I wanted to tackle today was chassis tubes for the cross member I had made some threaded tube sections a while ago for this I wanted a full threaded insert instead of the sleeves you can buy as it gives a number of options later on if there's any problems plus the longer bolts will make the clutch change or dropping of the engine easier as it becomes a simple unbolt affair with what's in the car. I started off marking for the top of the rail to be drilled and attacked it with a 25mm hole saw but its fairly thick steel and the crappy hole saw just died. So I tried a step cutter and got most of the way but the lower section was a nightmare because of the captive nut. So I cut this section out and drilled the captive nut holders out.

The holes then were opened up with the die grinder and rounded off to 20mm (on the bottom side 25mm top side) and welded back in

The cross member was offered back up and the tubes put in and everything bolted up and measured to ensure it was in the same place as before. Then the welder was turned up and it got welded in place.

Dropped the cross member and tacked up the lower holes to tubes so it won't move and there's no chance out it pulling through as its sitting on a 20mm hole with 25mm tube Unless of course the welded section of chassis rail pulls out Anyway after the lower section was dressed the threads were cleaned out and the cross member offered back up to make a final check and all looks good

Just need to work out how I'm going to get round to the other side and start work on that as its a long way to drag the car out and turn it around as I'd have to drag it into the road and back up the drive

If anybody has a way of getting the top mount holes for the large hole when changing from the small hole to line up please post it up

So what do you think so far??

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Got a bit more done recently nothing major but every little helps

I some how got left at work on nights on my own for a night last week so obviously I was naturally busy making something for the car

A stand for the fuel pump and regulator which will reside in the boot. It's finished in truck bed paint because I'm liking the stuff at the moment

Decided to build up the front legs too, to see what's needed and what a performance found I had no bolts that fitted and had no steering arms in the boxes of bits. Managed to find what bolts were required from the thread's thread on here so well done all that have contributed to it I also had to steal parts from the MK1 project too Still not finished as I'm awaiting parts but at least the bearings fitted!!!

Found some brakes in the boxes that had a spacer kit fitted M16 so give them a lick of paint

    obviously they were going..

Also got the clutch fork cleaned up and painted apparently its a modified one in some way

Got the drivers side chassis tubes done. A pic of the drum sticks that I used (ready for galv. spray before fitting)

Got them fitted and welded it all back up was playing with the welder settings and although it doesn't look the best its strong very strong

Bolts fitted to confirm the threads are clean and fit for purpose after being cleaned with the tap

Also managed to get the chassis rails etc stitch welded a little close up of the welds again having a play with the settings

    This were the results

Painted the front panel behind the grill too one day as I got bored just before I closed up for the day, for some reason part of it has reacted so will be done again at some point

And lastly I got the brake pedal assembly out for painting

    Stripped and rubbed down ready

Parts primed (well a pic of one of the pedals)

All these parts are now painted up and its ready for re-assembly so pic's to follow. Hopefully will be in the garage tomorrow so will get some more done.

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Grabbed an hour or so in the garage today and managed to rebuild the pedal box now its all dry. Not bad it only took 3 or so attempts before it was assembled correctly

Then I turned my attentions to the roof inside the car its a Ghia model its had a vinyl roof on, so the outside needs some work and the inside had a little surface rust on but nothing major and soon disappeared with DA and a good wipe down
    Before..

During with a coat of Etch primer..

And all done in Satin Black..

That's all I could do as the garage was fumey and I had run out of paint it's surprising how much paint the little cans hold and even more surprising how much paint is needed to give the roof two coats to cover it

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Did a little more yesterday on the old girl. Started off on building up the front legs as I had received the tap to clean the threads so the brakes could be fitted

Started fitting them up and this was the result

The calliper catches the alloy hub lip??? All looked simple just requiring a spacer so Tried a M12 washer but it still catches and if its spaced any more the gapping wouldn't be central???

They're M16 spaced callipers (with ATE on the side?). They have an 8mm spacer kit fitted and mounted to the bilstein suspension with 2.8i discs, so can anybody shed some light on a way round it???

Next I gave the handbrake a clean and lick of paint happy with the results

Also painted the steering column funny it looks so much better. Simple things make the difference I'm seeing its in the details hey!

Repaired offside drip rail also. Tried to keep repairs to a minimum on this side as the other side was completely done but this side only had little areas so clamped a heat sink to the rail and welded up the gap. Not tried this method on a car as such but it worked so fairly happy

The last job was one I wasn't looking forward to for some reason I guess it was if I got it wrong it would show and cause more issues later!!
So what was the job? A simple case of drilling the new holes for the large hole top mounts not sure why I was bothered so much both sides done and the measurements seem the same so again happy days. Also added some holes and welded the layers together and around the larger hole to close the layers

Other news my mate has sorted the paints that's plural as the cars will be going two tone with a twist if it works out, interior coverings all sorted just need to work up to that point lol, Matt (Urchy107) has done my wheels and they're getting picked up tomorrow (fingers crossed) so its moving along just need to sort out these flipping brakes HELP!!

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Hi there, really enjoying reading your build, keep it up. I also had the same issue with the 'standard' width alloy hubs and M16 calipers. I ended up grinding the offending bit of caliper away and all has been well since. Not an ideal solution I realise. I expect they are ment to be used with a smaller caliper like a willwood or something. I think if I do it again I'll go for the 'grp 4' ones which add a bit of track (iirc 10mm) which should clear the caliper if the gap is in the right place. CheeRS!

I had the same problem when fitting a new set of vented discs, m16 calipers and spacer kit to my mk1, and also just got the grinder to the caliper and shaved a bit off them and is fine now Looking like a nice job so far mate

You could also machine away part of the hub.
The problem is that the inside of the lip on the standard hub is chamfered, while the alloy ones are not...

    Great thread

Don't forget that if the calipers are spaced 8mm you need 4mm washers twix caliper and strut to centralise caliper. And pos longer bolts.

Thanks for the heads up mate I hadn't noticed the chamfer and I've got access to a lathe tomorrow night

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

    Little update

Right I had an issue with the callipers binding as per pic

Suggested solutions were take a grinder to the callipers, simple enough and a trusted mod. Then exboyracer pointed out the standard hubs are chamfered and the alloy ones aren't

    And again he was right

So we know the problem and the solution I chose

Well it would of been rude not to lol

    And the result's

Not bad seems I don't get to use the lathe much these days

The main thing is did it work??

    Of course

So the legs got built up but I need longer bolts for the callipers (now where did I hear this??? Cheers alladdin ) OOooo and you can make out the nice new alloy hub nut covers

Also started to replace the wiring loom tabs on the inner wing but I'm not sure if I like/want them any suggestions????

    That's it for now

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Hahahaha - PROJECT SUMMER FUN IS STARTING TO BE PROJECT AUTUMN PAIN IN THE AR$E!!!! (yes autumn is on it's way lol)

Anyway holidays out of the way no enthusiasm left, but 'A' want to complete something this year has caused another update

Paint is all ordered even if I don't have a clue on what I'm doing on the rest of the car

Been messing with the welder and got it working a little better so the reinforcing plates and strut brace carriers were welded up. I had stitched the plates but as the welder was working I went for the complete weld which I wish I hadn't now but hey ho.

I also painted the inside of the wings with truck bed paint as per inside the wheel arch but no pic's!
Today my mate come round and we started to prep and primed the engine bay, there's nothing like paint to get the enthusiasm going

All done looks ok needs a good flatting session but it's all covered as it should be

The view whilst having a brew

I managed to clean up weld on the wheels after they were nicely banded (Thanks Matt Urchy107) and get a little bit of filler on the join on the show face side before I had to pack up due to the rain

Hopefully on Thursday the engine bay will be flatted down and some colour put on

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

    Thursday equalled paintday

My mate was a busy little boy! (Thanks matey )

Sadly there was more reactions and some needs redoing (live and learn as they say, it's all about the prep work!!!)

The good thing is it's moving along and soon to have another home where I'll have access to proper kit and space ()

Anyhow the finished for the night

(If you know about painting please have a look in the 'Bodywork threads' I'm after some info. )

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Today I've mostly been playing with my wheels

A little taster to see if they actually fit but I think I'll have to lower it a little lol This is with the axle jacked up until it lifted the back end up

They were all sanded and a little etch applied to seal the surface and get them ready for proper painting as soon as it can be done

A close up of the finish I achieved (I have no finger tips left and can't spray to save my life so please bare with me )

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

    Small update

Took the doors to a mate of a mates workshop the other day as the garage with the car in is to damn small with all the other stuff packed in there and my mate was moaning a little about the compressor struggling (which it does with the air tools like DA's), so I get a text saying the doors were goosed and he wasn't a happy man

So today I popped down to see what was what with the doors to find him busy as a bee flatting back the filler repairs he did last night and looking at the finish he had with another skim dropped on tonight I have to say I'm well chuffed with the way they are looking (oh and he was joking they aren't bad at all

The busy boy lol (Can this still be classed as a built not bought car if my mates helped???)

Hopefully tomorrow the engine bay will be sorted after some rework to cure the reactions that have happened. I'll be taking on the dirty part and my mate will be spraying until he's taught me how to do it

Also got to decide what to do engine wise I was going to put the old 1700 x-flow from the MK1 in then change to the XE I have lying around but now I'm thinking of putting the LET I have that was going to go in the MK1 in the MK2 and the XE in the MK1 or the XE in the MK2

    Any comment's welcome

Little bit of progress as in the all the doors all primed and wheels painted no pics at the moment but week after next there should be more updates with pics. Just making up my mind if I like the wheels in the colour they are and if it'll suit the car as wheels make or break a good project

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Well the doors are done (rubbed down) but for some reason my phone has deleted the pic's but they have turned out great Got my wheels back too and although they need a little work before I'll be 100% happy I mounted the tyres to see what they look like and take some pic's (guess what happened? I officially hate my phone right now lol)

Managed to get these some how

Base coat hopefully being dropped on the doors and boot next week. I also need to try and find somewhere local to stick the car to prep and paint it just in case it can't go to my mates mate's place lol

Well not much has happened here still looking for a unit to get the car in so it can be sprayed but the doors have the gold base on and the wheels are getting redone as I decided they should be gold now lol. Bloody phone camera is still deleting pic's so none there hopefully I'll have another update with pic's and some actual progress (sorry for a crappy post just trying to keep the motivation going )

And tonight the wheels went gold base will lacquer them tomorrow when the paint has dried it was a little cold in the unit as I haven't sorted the heating yet lol, glad I decided to do it as they look 10x's better in gold (well they do to me at least )

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

Seems people are reading I may as well keep updating

Friday night was the last night to get things done before the shell was moved (supposed to have done it all week but a broken toilet and other things stopped that ) so I needed to build up the front end get tyres on wheels and put in a rad cut out in before moving half a garden so it could be pushed out turned round so the rear drivers side was accessible! Long story short I failed But I did get some bits done

Rad cut out hole well erm cut out

And all welded in and bits put on the front end

Soooooo today me and my mate moved half the garden and got the car out and in to its new temporary home

Plan for the day get something done A fair bit was done actually starting on rubbing down the roof and treating it as the car was a Ghia it had had a vinyl roof and the dreaded pock marks were present so it was cleaned and treated before filled

Then it was a case of working around the car and prepping it for primer and finding any areas needing repair and the odd change here and there were made The pic's in no particular order say it so much better than me.
My nephew even tipped up and got stuck in (which was a surprise first time I've seen him do owt )

Working around the car and changes

    Hopefully more tomorrow

I have a choice of three engines at the moment the choices are:

    1. 1700 x-flow
    2. C20Xe
    3. C20Let

I was going to use the xe then the 1700 now the LET lol so who knows by the time its done

Re: Mk2 Escort More door Code Name: Project Summer Fun

    What a crap day

Went down to do some more work on the car today a Sunday and up a 8a.m. NNNNOOOOOOOOOOO

Anyhoow give the roof some small localised skims of filler to remove any final imperfections took a while but its come out nice
    In progress

Whilst my mate was doing that I got the welder down (had to borrow it from the guy who I'm lending the unit from then the gas bottle across an uneven ground and I can say that thing was flipping heavy lol Set up for a little welding and found out the gas bottle was empty So I had to run home and pick mine up which wasted a good deal of time

The aim was to get the wings on so on with the doors and a simple case of place and weld the wings as they had come off the car (how wrong was I) Started on the passenger side as this side has had all the repairs made on it and it was a nightmare (not to add the first time I've done this on my own ) Got it as close as I could but it didn't seem to want to fit but we came to some sort of arrangement after hours of swearing and sulking on my behalf

    Looks ok at this angle

Swage lines look ok but I'm not really 100% happy (the light makes it look funny in the pic) but that's the best I could get

The bonnet had fairly ok gaps all round too not bad for a GRP job

Work started on the wings to straighten up the lines

The drivers side went on fairly easily as it had less repairs

Two more pics just because I took them lol (other repairs in progress)

The primer stage that we hoped for after yesterdays good progress day was never going to happen but progress is progress and there's no point in rushing it now I've had the car more or less stored for the past 4 years

Now it time for a Hope you enjoyed
