temporary loss of 1st/2nd
Mornin,
As above, could anyone explain the temporary loss, (as in couldn't engage ) of 1st / 2nd gear on a 2000E 3 rail box? Got car back on drive and had them again. any idea guys?
cheers

Re: temporary loss of 1st/2nd
if the stick moved across into the 1st/2nd gate but wouldn't move forward/back into either gear it sounds like either the detent balls/springs aren't working on 3rd/4th / reverse, or the noddy on the end of the single selector shaft from the stick to the three selector shafts has come loose.
The knacked detent bits is annoying but unlikely to make it go bang - but if the noddy has come loose it (should be wirelocked on) either the locking wire and/or the pinch bolt can drop into the case, and you really don't want that.
I should get a look at it pretty quick if you haven't already

Re: temporary loss of 1st/2nd
Hi Bernie
By noddy do you mean gear selector arm / lever assembly? This happened after a long spell of 1st / 2nd gear crawling in traffic. Strangely, after I backed it onto the drive, I got all my gears back ! Haven't used the car since for reasons various. Box was supposed to have been overhauled prior to my purchase!
Thanks for your advice

Re: temporary loss of 1st/2nd
hi
what i meant is theres a single selector rod from the base of the stick with this noddy on the end - which then that picks up on each of the three selector forks. if the lock bolt comes loose it won't let the noddy swing across to engage with each of the selectors
bit hard to explain - i'll post a pic up if i can find one

Hi Bernie
Yep, I understand the piece you are meaning. End of single shaft that selects one of the 3 shafts you need. I have a blown-up diagram from Haynes Mexico manual. Symptoms were exactly as you describe, what I can't figure out is how I got the gears back? However, I had selected 3rd / 4th and reverse before that happened !! Thanks for your advice
