Ford Cortina Mk1 - Track Car

As the song says ... Oops ... I Did It Again

With a project on track to be completed (just missing some little things) thought it was time to move on to another project ...

The idea of preparing a Ford Cortina Mk1 was already taking shape for some time and no big hurry was seeing some of the cars that were for sale ... but nothing that interests me... the problem as always is that do not intend to restore the car but modify it so that they are of the cars were in very good condition and the cars need a thorough restoration.

At some time in these surveys went to see a car that interested me and by chance ended up "discovering" the same space a perfect candidate for what I wanted, restored and painted was kept for two years with all the pieces waiting be mounted.

Due to it being abandoned for so long and the fact that I do not want the engine or gearbox, turned out to be an excellent deal.

And so began another project ...

Some of the photos of the car:

The car was in good company

Let's see if I can transform it in to this:

Re: Ford Cortina Mk1 - Track Car

Once I have purchased the car came the question what to put in the engine compartment?

After the Pinto's in and Escorts in Xflow in the Anglia I want something diferent and this is what came out:

One Zetec zero kms with some ITB's and 170 hp I also purchased the motor kit from Retro Ford to get the engine in the Cortina and at the same time give it an older look ...

Given that the car is basically to do track days already decided that there was need to change to a dry sump:

Wow that looks an awesome car you have created there. Reminds me of my old XE powered one, the shot from behind with skinny tyres on 13" wheels does a lot!!

Fronts look like that might rub the arch? But it does look like your doing a great job there, and it looks a cracking sheel to start with

Mmmm looking really good, Making a nice job of it, but keep a spare gearbox lying around, the Elite is not known for reliability, especially the 6 speed.....oh & yes I do have an elite box, and no spare!

Re: Ford Cortina Mk1 - Track Car

My Elite box is in a Westfield kit car for sprints, on the back of a 1600 vauxhall, just uses the stick, I just lift for the up shifts and clutch going down.
I have driven an S2000 powered car with a 6 speed IL200 on paddles. It looks like the paddles are more gentle on the box as they take out the human error of pulling on the stick whilst still under full power...if it works, the link below is the s2000 round Ty Croes Circuit

Hi thank you for the video...nice drive from your friend!

When I did my research before buying 2 things come up first there was a problem in the first levers that Elite changed in the latter boxes (but you only make one first impression ) second geartronic don't recommend a flat shift with this box ( I have tried to buy one from them) because the system can't sense the gear change and if you flat shift like there is a strong possibility that the gears are going to be damaged I think this 2 problems have created some bad word about the box.
One thing that the seller (not Elite) advice me to do was to put one cooler working with the box ( I'm going to do it because I think is a good advice seeing the oil that the box holds).
I'm going also to post the advices that Elite has give me for using the box because I think that can help someone that has a similar box...

Re: Ford Cortina Mk1 - Track Car

    Recomendations for the Elite IL200:

1.º How much oil and brand recommended?

    0.9Litres – use 75w90 or 75w140 of a good quality brand.

2.º Any advice in running in the box (it's a new one)?

Give it around 130Km of light use to bed it in, no full power launches initially.

3.º What is the best way to operate the box?
    a) on upshift
    – No clutch – lift off the throttle to release the dog engagement.

    b) on downshift
    – Clutch each down shift to release the dog engagement. If going 5-4-3-2 – then the clutch needs to go down and up for each shift.

    c) gentile or hard shifting?
    - Pull/push the lever firmly to its stops, then return to centre. You don’t need to be aggressive, but hard enough to make sure the lever travels all the way to its stops.

4.º Any advice how to extend the life of the gearbox?

Regular checks of the oil, any signs of burning or particles and you should inspect the gearbox. Also always lift off on up shifts, and always use the clutch on down shifts. If you use any electronics, make sure it is closed loop and fully set up correctly.

5.º What is the normal starting procedure? And for reverse?

To go from 1st to neutral, you need to lift the collar on the main gear stick, once the box is in neutral, use the small gear lever to engage reverse. For starting I would always have the box in neutral when you start the engine, then shift to 1st and pull away.

Make sure the gearbox has had some use up and down the gears during warm up to make sure the oil is a good temperature.
