Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

i am struggling to get a good bonnet,my front edge has alot of holes so might try to restore this one.
was the front support a git to remove ? i also have a nut missing to the hinge support so have to remove that anyway
always worth a try i guess.

I'd be inclined to use a bonding agent on it, I certainly wouldn't go near it with a welder.

mine are glued back on as per original

a welder will almost certainly distort the thin bonnet skin

i used gripfill but any decent glue such as sikaflex, tiger seal etc.. should do the same job

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

wanted to get my rear floorpan in today but no joy, instead i spent ages removing rot and prepping

was a nice section of rot just here

so it was chopped out and replaced

i was originally going to leave my seat x-members in but curiosity got the better of me and im glad i had a look

it looks as if a plate has been added at some point but they just ignored the rest of the rot?? bizarre!

floor pan dropped in the hole, not yet welded in

and heres where i finished up

Basically im going to replace the entire section underneath the seat x-member and then create my own x-members out of 1.2mm mild steel
i havent decided yet whether ill create my own inner sills or use pattern parts
(i already have one side so it may be just as cheap to buy the other side rather than buying the steel to make my own

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

I have a few choices now,

Option 1: pay £69.90 (inc p&p) for a pair or seat x-members off ebay

    Option 2: pay £27.49 (inc p&p) for 1.5m of box section 80mm x 40mm x2mm
and make these sections fit (the dimensions are almost identical to the original x-members)

the a pillar post is easy lads,if yours is proper crusty then just take a deep breath .
youll struggle to find some of the spots so youll need to get cutting.
dont remove the thick steel hinge iron that stays on the car. the rest trim out, remember to lob a brace in to keep perfect distance to the door.
mines moved 5mm so gotta beat it .

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

Knocked together a filler section to go between the front and rear floor pans underneath the seat x-member
i first made a template out of 0.8mm mild steel, the reason is that its easy to cut and bend (plus i have loads of it)
Once the template was tested (and fit ok) i went back down the shed to create the proper section with some thicker steel

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

trial fitted my filler section today and it seems to fit quite nicely, the little 90 degree bend tucks neatly under the sill, ill be drilling a few holes and plug welding it from the top and then seam weld it all the way along where it meets the front floor pan

i also trial fitted my headlights, they are currently taped into place with gaffa tape, the reason being that the original bolt holes are absolutely miles out!
i plan to weld them up, drill my own holes and use riv nuts to bolt the bowls in place

Thought i'd better leave it there for now, if i spend new years day on the car ill get my ass kicked

its amazing how different she looks with headlights, much more like a car

Some top fabrication work going on here. Keep the pictures and posts coming, it's really good watching this come together. One hell of a lot of work going into it but its easy to see it will be a cracking car when finished. Well done mate,

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

    Cheers guys, much appreciated

this morning i managed to get my filler section and rear floor pan welded in,
to be honest i spent most of my time measuring and marking things out, took quite a bit of modifying to get the rear floor pan to go in the hole properly.
I have decided that once all the floor pans are done im going to chop out the prop tunnel and weld in one of those nice big rally tunnels

I have ordered some 1mm mild steel which i'll use to create my own inner sills, (thats next on my 'to do' list)

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

Created my own inner sill last night from 1mm mild steel, works out about half the price of buying inner sills off ebay and in my opinion is far more tidy as the join is tucked away at the bottom if the sill where it first meets the floor.
At the moment its plug welded every 3", at a later date ill seam weld it all the way along the bottom, the only problem i ran into is that the metal i ordered it slightly sorter than advertised hence the gap towards the rear (im not too fussed as ill knock up a small section at a later date)

Aero catches are properly in and front wings are 'kind of' fitted, they are riveted to the front panel but along the mounting rails and the 'A' posts they are currently held with gaffa tape
