I spent the morning messing with my wing, they are the chinese items so lots of cutting, bending and shaping required
After an hour of playing it looked like this.

    01.jpg
    02.jpg
    03.jpg

and after another few hours it started looking like this.

    04.jpg
    05.jpg
    06.jpg

I just need to put a skim of chemical metal along the edge where it meets the door the sand it back until the gap is spot on all the way along
i need to do my outer sill first but after that's done i should be ready to fit the wing properly

Not too sure why the bottom image has displayed twice (the gaps really good along the bottom now), i really need to get the hang of this uploading images stuff.

Looks good now mate 👍🏻 can be frustrating fitting wings just gone through the same myself!! It’s been know to build up gaps with weld and linish back to achieve a nice gap.. I was lucky to get away with light hammering and a dolly

tatty old sill has been cut off and new sill was offered up, its going to take a fair bit of fettling to get a nice fit but i'm hoping to have it done by the end of the week which should allow me to get the front wing welded on next week

I literally spent all day messing around with the wing, after attaching it for the 50th time i just accepted that it was the best fit i was going to get before breaking out the grinder and filler tub.
In fairness its actually very close to being a perfect fit, halfway up the wing rail it sits about 1mm above the bonnet so i'll slit it with the grinder dropping it by 1mm and re-weld,
other than that i just need to open up the gap near the top where it meets the door, i shall cut and re-weld as previously suggested.
I also need to plug weld the front where it meeds the front panel but the wing fits very well here so shouldnt be a problem.

First wing on and it feels like a big milestone has been reached

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

Having replaced all those panels on the O/S and fitted the wing it was time to tackle the exact same jobs on the N/S, having learned a lot from doing the other side it was far quicker stripping it all back this time.
All of the panels have been very badly replaced, they are miles out and very badly patched up in places so all had to come out.

Its a massive job and milestone getting the wings on when the manufacturing is poor but a great ego boost when you do.

I had to to revert to an old technique I was taught years ago and had to weld extra metal all the way down the door gap, wing edge to get it right!

I managed to finish off the majority of the welding on the A post, splash and flitch panel (just a few odd bits left)
I also fitted the door which closes nicely and seems to fit well, turns out that the lower hinge on the door had been really badly repaird putting the door miles out, so i stripped it back and re-welded it

Repaired my dashboard panel, gave the inside a coat of 'seat ibiza' silver that i had lying around and spot welded it back in both sides along the inner door,
Just need to finish spot welding along the top lip where the windscreen rubber sits. tomorrow i'll also remove that brace i welded in.

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

i finally got the car up on a jig i made which means that i can tackle a load of jobs i couldnt previousy,
Chopped out some bad previous repairs and tacked on my N/S outer sill which ill hopefuly finish during the week.

My brother sourced a ford ranger sump which looks like it will allow the duratec to drop nicely into the hole clearing the cross member with room to spare, i just need to find a pickup pipe (or make one)

I also recycled some old discovery rear trailing arms and axle brackets making some engine mounts, saved buying some and they look like they will work very well

Nearside outer sill is finished, i was supposed to get my front wing done but decided to go back and do some of the jobs i never got around to finishing before so i spend part of today finishing welding in my front chassis rails and strenghening plates, one side is done and i should have the other side finished tomorrow.
I also started looking at the underside just tidying up odd sections and seam welding the diff tunnel which weas previously just tacked in pace.
The dog decided to come and see what all the noise was, now i cant seem to get rid of him.

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

We had a little play mocking up the engine in the hole today, so iv'e worked out its going to be a tight fit and i need a lowered steering rack...

The first set of pictures show how the sump touches the steering rack making it sit higher at the front

    20171217_131138.jpg

    20171217_131251.jpg

    20171217_131306.jpg

After dropping the cross member approx 10mm on its bolts, the engine looked level and had a better gap between sump and cross member and also gave a better clearance at the back of the head for a water rail

I'm not quite sure an MX5 6 speed gearbox is going to fit without some further modifications to the gearbox tunnel.... they are huge!

Finished fitting my N/S front wing this morning, both front wings just need a little trimming and re-welding along the edge which meets the doors to get the gaps correct.
The gap along the bonnet is identical to the O/S, however, i do need to modify the very front off the wing where it kicks out slightly closing the gap.

I also recently lowered my steering rack mounts so the overall rack height is approx 10mm lower

Takes time to get it right but keep up that attitude and it'll look a million dollars!
Swage those holes in the front panel if you can. A lot more professional looking.

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

Took the rear N/S of the car back to bare metal and primed, i reckon i took about 5kg of filler out of the side.
Was really worried what was hiding underneath but its not too bad, a few knocks towards the back which can most likely be sorted with hammer and dolly then a light skim of filler.

started preparing to fit my rear bubbles, although the previous owner had welded steel over the existing wheel tubs (looked a right bodge) i have started unpicking it to reveal what actually looks like a good inner half of the tub, the back doesnt look cracking but i'm sure it can be sorted, im pleased as this has saved £££ buying or making 15" tubs

The N/S tub isn't too bad but it was completely corroded at the back and had been badly plated over so i ended up just chopping it out, i'm pretty sure i can repair that missing section and fortunately the offside rear tub looks in far better condition.

im going to replace a section of the chassis rail which isnt great, can anybody tell me what that bracket is that i have circled in the second picture?
it had completely corroded on my existing chassis rail and ill chop it off the replacement section if its not needed.
