dont people notch that part out to get the car lower / wheel right up in the tubs?

I wont be too low as the roads round here are really bumpy

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

i finished work early so spent hours measuring up before cutting out the rear quarter for the bubble arch, i'm actually no further forward though and more confsed now than i was before i started.

With the car on the spit it i fitted the axle on leaf springs and found that it didnt help much because as the wheel goes up into the arch it also moves further toward the rear of the car, is there a decent guide anywhere with measurements?

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

After 'daveMK1' kindly spent some time expaining how he did his bubbles on the phone i took the plunge and got stuck in, to be honest i feel a bit daft now as it took me about 15 minutes to get to this stage.
i barely had to linish it back at all and i'm very pleased with the fit, the wing presses right up into the curve of the bubble so very little filler will be required.

Looking good m8 - if your going down the turret route then do them first as it gives you more room to work in .. the tub infills are a pain in the backside

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

Took a closer look at the chassis rail behind the tub and it was in bad condition, as was the floor section underneath.
Fortunately i had some spare bits that come with the car and these sections were included so i set about chopping out the old crap and tidying up the replacement bits.
They sit in quite nicely but there's a 10mm gap between the two chassis rail sections so ill weld a little plate over the top connecting the two.
hopefully i'll get this lot welded in tomorrow

Took a long time to get it back in today but i was taking my time and paying attention to detail, another hour or so and it'll be done ready for my turret to go in

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

I spent a long time looking up turret fitting guides and found lots of measurements etc. which just didn't seem to work, so finally decided to just get the car square on the jig and use the laser level drawing a vertical line up from the centre of the bump stop.

Laid the parcel shelf on top to see how it sits against the turret, not sure if i need to take the turret higher or lower yet.

It seems to fit quite nicely, i'm hoping to have it welded in tomorrow so i can look at permanently attaching my bubble arch.

looks spot on...id take it a bit higher..to meet the fire wall/parcell shelf..would make the welding/ blending a lot neater...and of course higher equals mor movement to make the car lower with shock heights..if you need to...good job...cheers mark

That's about where mine are. My cup washer is about level with the bottom of the folded over piece that the quarter panel trim tucks into. That's the only reference point I can give you as mines an earlier shell!
If I remember rightly the turrets are angled in 3 each degrees which should give you as near as damn it 1000mm between the hole centres

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

Ta mate, i did find a drawing with some measurements online (Gartrac comes to mind)
and it said 14" from the top (inside) of the turret to the bottom of the chassis rail which brings it to where you said.

I perhaps could have gone a little higher but i haven't notched out the chassis rail and don't plan on taking the car too low as the roads round here are terrible

The turret is welded in and i'm hoping to get a little more done today, should have a few more pics up later
Thanks for all of the comments and interest

Coming along really well mate.. I’ve had very similar issues with mine ended up replacing all of the chassis rails front to back and the metalwork underneath. Also had anxiety about turret fitment, but to be honest as long as they are somewhere near and look right I wouldn’t worry to much about measurements. Top job 👍🏻

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

Got a couple of hours on the old girl this afternoon, one of my welds is pretty shocking so i'll go back and tidy up with the dremel, the rest seem ok.
cut a circle out of the parcel shelf which just needs taking back with the flap disc then this side is pretty much done.

I can then get back on with all the little jobs i never finished like welding up the holes in the parcel shelf.

Re: 5tox mk1 escort restoration project

Today i set about fitting my other rear turret, i first found a nasty rotten piece which had to be cut out and replaced.
I then cut out a hole and fit my turret, its welded in place but still needs the lip folding over and seam welding all the way round the tub.
The parcel shelf has been laid on top and just needs the turret holes grinding back until they fit, there is another small piece i need to make and weld in then im ready to weld the parcel shelf back in.

Cheers Graham, hoping to see some major progress this summer.
Hopefully all the major structural stuff will be completed, i started from the front and worked back so not too much left to do,
I know the rear chassis rails under the boot floor are pretty bad

I chopped the firewall down today so it fits between the turrets, im going to have it set back approximately an inch from its original position so it sits snuggly between the turrets.
Haven't welded it in yet though.

Offside rear turret is now fully welded in, link boxes are tacked into position.
I then did a few repairs to the offside rear tub which i was very pleased with, should have my last bubble welded on pretty soon

Got a little further with it today, took hours to carfully chop the rot out of the opposite side, i had to remove the chassis rail and will probably have to make a replacement as it was completely rotten
