    5tox mk1 escort restoration project

Lots of odd little bits of welding done today such as the middle exhaust bracket.

Finished welding up my gearbox tunnel to the bulkhead, she now looks like a basking shark with a huge open mouth, great for the big old gearbox but not so good for my left foot when its not on the clutch pedal.

Hopefully soon she will be seam sealed underneath and off the jig.
I really need a few hours just going round making a list before i do that.

    Not in a million years

I reckon there will be just enough room for my to weld a little foot rest to the side of the G/box tunnel

Cut and welded my nearside front wing so its gapped correctly with the fitted door (i may still adjust it ever so slightly)

Need to re-skin both of my doors, so keeping an eye out for something reasonably priced

I also welded on studs for my handbrake 'p' clips, now do i:
    1. Clip them to the body where left and right cross over
    2. Clip them yo the axle
    3. It doesnt matter which and im worrying over nothing

This weekend my drivers door has been on and off at least a dozen times while i cut and re welded the lower bracket to get the door in the right position, i also cut and welded along the back of the frong wing where it meets the door to get a consistent gap.
The door itself wasnt too bad but sections of the skin had rotted through so has to be replaced.
Cut the skin off, did a few small repairs along the bottom and am now looking for reasonably priced door skins.

A few little bits tidied up, i added a strengthening bracket from the middle of the rear panel to the boot floor to stiffen this section up (copied it from one of my favorite resto threads)
Done a few repairs to the inner door frame and fitted the skin, still a bit of work to do around the front where the wing mirror sits, better get the hammers and dollies out

Drivers door is pretty much there now, done lots of odd little bits of fillering and sanding.
Made a cool little bracket for my megasquirt, ecu tucks away neatly beside the glovebox.

My brother kindly brought over his retro ford bits and jenveys today so we could see if the engine was in the correct position, the idea being that retro ford stuff should fit.
What we discovered is that although it was close, the engine had to drop a touch lower, go forward a touch and angle backwards.

Its in a very nice position now with all the bits fitting correctly, i have to say the retro ford parts are fantastic quality, having seen them up close im very tempted to buy a retro manifold and water rail.

My gear stick is now far lower and in a much better position

I did have to heavily modify my x-member, with hindsight im not sure the ranger sump was worth the effort, but if your after a cheap solution for the sump and dont mind putting in the hours it does work

Is it the height of the engine that's the problem or is it the shape of the sump? Can't it be modified in some way or not?

I will be looking for an Ex manifold for a 2.5 Duratec once the build eventually gets started. The engine will be dry sumped.

I think its a combination of both, im pretty sure it can be modified to fit but im not set up to weld stainless.
Id say it needs to sit about 2" lower as its trying to come through the bulkhead, bearing in mind that my engine should really be a little further forward, lower and tilted back a bit.
It owes me 325 plus the long journey to collect, so ill be looking to recover £300

I was going to try using the standard 2.0 pistons as a cheap otion for higher cr but in the end just bit the bullet buying these omega pistons from SBD, they are lovely items and only 550 delivered to my door the next working day.

I decided to take a punt on a set of maxispeeding rods and i have to say the quality is outstanding, i even compared them to a set of molnars and theres no difference in quality and they are half the cost.
Weighed them all and are exactly the same to 1 gram, id honestly recommend them to anybody.

I bought the speeding rods too. Just waste. The edges were to sharp which can cause damages. Also the Rod eye were drilled too small. Never get this refunded. Worst customer Service ever! At the end I bought a set of K1 rods.

Thats really interesting, mine are spot on.
I had read a few bad reviews including their customer service but gave it a shot and it paid off i guess

Im quite interested in how the sharp edges cause damage, Do you mean like rough casting marks?

Sharp edges cause stress concentration points, smoothing reduces the point load path which will reduce fatigue. same as you would drill a round hole at the end of a crack to stop propagation

For most peoples application the chinese Rods will posibly do the job, but so will std production ones unless your engine's going to be used for constant high revs for prolonged lenghts of time.

Like alot of things the quality of the rod material can't be spotted by the naked eye. One of my main concerns would be, are they going to be turned into jelly through fatigue due to high power and revs. A broken con rod is never a pretty sight.

Yeah mine is only a weekend road car, wont be used competitively.
Wont be revved hard often but just wanted a bottom end that could safely take 250ish bhp

The standard 2.3 mazda rods were shocking, rough raised casting marks and sharp edges everywhere, strangely the 2.0 ford rods were much better.

    You should be okay then.

If your 2.5 engine's built for torque then there's no reason why you could n't use a 3.0-1 diff. You should be able to drive it more in the torque band much like you would with a Diesel engine.

I bought a wrecked duratec for fitting up (head was great). It broke rod 1 through i assume oil starvation (locked up maybe). It wrecked everything crank, rod, holes in the block. They seem to suffer from bottom end knock and rods are known to be weak. Anything must be better than standard.

Check your rods have the right bolts there was a big thing about imitation AP rod bolts.

The bolts look very good quality, almost identical to the molnar ones but a shallower head.
Molnar are 'approved' on ARP's website, but didnt see maxpeeding on there 🤣

I very much doubt there genuine but not sure how i'd check for sure

They were being supplied with fake ARP's a while back, they look indentical, for 250Hp you should fit good known quality rods.....could be an expensive mistake for the sake of saving a few £100. Only way you could check would be through destructive testing to determine their tensile strength

Great thread so far mate, you have come along way with the car.

My two pennies worth regarding the conrods, I would look at using something better tested (like Manley or even Arrow if the budget will allows) especially considering the higher stress on the conrods due to the longer stroke of the 2.3. It's also well worth fitting an cylinder head oil restrictor to stop the cylinder head filling with oil and losing oil pressure to the mains and big ends.

    Morning,

Not sure if you have seen this document but its well worth following the relevant parts when it comes to building your engine up 5tox, especially the pages on de-burring journal edges and opening up the oil return drains in the cylinder block.

Bought some nice powder coated after market bumper brackets and a new stainless bolt set off ebay, problem is that the nylon spacers are too short, do the bolts need doing up tighter to pull both sides in or do i need to buy or make longer spacers?

My boot lid also sits on the piss one side, the tension bars are on the same adjustment catch both sides so can't work it out.

Chopped out a section for my lower rad panel, just needs welding in, will hopefully source my rad soon from ralloy, not a bad looking thing for £300
