    R£Storation RS2000

An impulse buy on a well known auction site without viewing the car (Caveat Emptor).... but turned into a labour of love...
I took the car as far as I could with my limited tallent. and a little or should I say a lot of help from my freinds.. (theres a song in there somewhere)...Slide061.jpg
Its an RS2000 that looks worse now than the day I received it....
After it arrived I never really touched it for about a year (I needed to save up more pennies to take it to the next stage)
One of the first problems I came against was the Engine. Now cosworth engines aint cheap, This one was included in the price of the car which wasn't cheap either :/
But after removing the head I discovered the block was cracked in several places (crazy paving) springs to mind.. kerching!!
I remebered it came with a breakers receipt which I checked and it was guarenteed for 6 months (ofcourse this was a year later)... :/ ah well more pennies to save up.... bugger!

Oh yeah I forgot to mention the Gearbox was knackered too! I took it to a local Gearbox specialist he stripped it down and phoned me up with the question "how long was the gearbox left in the lake"?
I paid him a quick visit and to my total horror all gears were corroded and caked in rust.... Now we all know T5 Gearboxes aint cheap... bear with me theres a trend emerging here!!

New Engine sourced, I actually went to see this one running in the Saffire Cosworth it came out of.... Lesson learned!!! Next thing was to source a new Gearbox one came up on that famous auction site again in "Hull" miles away from me
but I drove down one weekend to see it before I put a bid in.... he he I wont be fooled again!! (Another song in there somewhere)... Anyway It came out of a mint hill climb TVR all gears selected ok I actually bought it on the spot it was that clean... because I was in my car I asked the guy to empty all the oil out of it before I loaded it to head back home.... To my total excitement the oil was like new that came out of it. It was well looked after.. im easily pleased

    Re: R£Storation RS2000

It's a real sh1t when people take the pee on ebay, it seems in the old ford, and particularly escort, world, its a case of assuming you are buying scrap, which is really not how it should be, what has happened to people's morals?

If I'm selling something old and dubious that I found lurking, then at least I'll describe it as such!

Looks like you're sorting it properly now though!! Keep it up!

Stick with it mate, I know just how you feel.
Have a look at the state of mine, sold by a Classic Car dealer, all necassary paperwork, only a few jobs for the MOT, blah, blah, blah.
It turned out to be hornedous.

    Re: R£Storation RS2000

NeilThomas Ill get the details for you later mate...
Retropower Yes I totally agree though my car is not by any means cosmetically in poor condition, So far ive had to replace the Engine / Gearbox / worldcup crossmember
Also because it needed some welding to the underside and on top of the wheel tubs for the roll cage I decided to remove the Panhard tower and Rod and go Watts linked... Im glad I did the welding on the tower was terrible
and wouldnt have lasted 5 mins on a track... Some people heve to realise when selling cars that peoples lives are at stake when driving these be it on a road or a track!!
Ive also had to replace the rear Atlas axle one of the drive shafts was wobbling like mad when place in a lathe... I bit the bullet and got recommended by the guys at Swan AVO to go to Fostek
for my axle build, which I did... They also took my old axle as a part ex (upon stripping it they found some serious safety issues) someone had put it together wrong....Oh the joys of taking on someone elses "finished" rolling shell!
In hind sight I wish Id have just bought a base shell and then I would have no one else to blame but myself.. At the moment the underside of the car is ready for bead blasting to remove all the paint and underseal from underneath the car
because whoever applied the primer should have checked its compatability with the ford diamond white paint...Its coming off in chunks and is leaving the primer on intact?Untitled-1.jpgP1010442-1.jpg1377009_536923323057472_1954934466_n.jpg1380100_536923799724091_1984267801_n.jpg
What horrors are waiting for me?

Hydraulic clutch set up from Burton, Fits inside the T5 Bell housing out of the way,,, Tidy!
The Roll Cage I've had a nightmare with.. Got one off a mate that but it just wasn't for me after deciding to go the full hog & all the way with the spec of the build. So I decided to get one from Safety Devices anyway long story short and extra postage cost to send it back... it just didn't fit properly the rear hoop was fine no issues but the front section and door bars made it twist... & call me old fashioned but after spending 500 odd quid having two front sections sent to me from Poland which is where they are made now, i believe..and sending SD dimension checks..which were cock on in my car.. I just didn't want to "make" it fit... I've asked several people who bought SD roll cages after my problems and they all said the same " I just made it fit" nah not for me.. so I was out of pocket on that one... next option and the best one in my opinion because I know tolerances can be all over the place for 70's cars was to get one made bespoke to the car... courtesy of the Swan AVO guys.. Just waiting on it to be powder coated now...
Additional cage mounts To "A" Pillar using existing seat belt mount on the "B" pillar Tied in for extra strength and rigidity to the 4 link boxes
Which can tear apart under big power stresses.. 3rd time lucky and Happy Happy Happy...

Paul it's factory white so it's staying white.. underside has been blasted to reveal a shit load of poor welding and filler...! I thought the inner wings were new but no! It was all filler done to a high quality but filler all the same hiding corrosion and holes
    :/

Just keep on digging up a botched restoration on this one.. What looked like a mint engine bay turns into a Lemon of a repair.. Full of missed corroded areas poor patched repairs, sort of what you cant see wont matter type repairs... What I want is all the areas you cant see to be addressed & made safe so you can still rest assured it has been repaired correctly...New panels ordered from "Magnum classic panels" only the best parts are going back on this build!
