    My Mk1's second rebuild.

After being a member of this forum for a while and now starting another rebuild on the Escort I thought I better contribute.
So a quick recap, Here is the Mk1 when I first bought it. Std 1300L shell with a type 49 kit. All that was needed was inner and outer sills, rear arches and tubs, The front wings came with the car and just needed welding on.

This was the result of the first resto.

I was built as a production class sprint car so was running Bilsteins coilies on the front and leaf springs on the rear with tramp bars, panard rod and a plate slipper. The engine was an ex stock car all steel 1300 crossflow that made 120Bhp at the fly.
I competed in the ASWMC sprint championship an came first in class for that year.

Some of you may remember it from one of Trigs earliest trackdays. It had been upgraded to a Zetec by this point.

It then became a general motorsport car taking part in more sprints, Trackdays, Drift days, 12car's and even made it to the Nurburg Ring twice.

After all this abuse its in a sorry state. The bottom end started knocking at an event so I decided to take it off the road and get it back to its former glory.

That was 2 years ago now. Its just been sat in the garage being used as a shelf.

Its been way to long so I have started work over the Xmas break and made some good progress. The car is now stripped and on a roll over jig.
    Let the fab work commence!!!!

The rear end is going to be turreted so the rear firewall is going to have to go.

One of the incidents I had when it was on the road was I may have accidentally caught a concrete post with the rear 1/4.
I managed to get hold of another one so the one on the car needs to come off. I never thought I would be doing this to it!!!

Yeah, the Zetec will be staying but may go ST170 as I can use all my rwd Bits. Duratec would be nice but I would have to buy/make everything again.

    Re: My Mk1's second rebuild.

I found some time to get in the garage this wk so here is the progress.

All the seams have been cleaned and the new 1/4 trimmed ready to go on. Well kinda. Turns out from the post damage the rear panel is all pulled out of shape so I thought balls to it and bought a new one.

Its mostly welded on but have been waiting for my panel delivery to line up the rear seam.

Will hopefully crack on next week.

    Re: My Mk1's second rebuild.

Sorry for the lack of updates guys but I have been mega busy recently.

I have made good progress on the car though. Best to just show some photo's I think.

The rear panel is on and both rear arches too.

Next step was to crack on with the tubs and turrets.

I'm starting to work my way forward now so redoing the main hoop feet. Nice and strong then a plate for it to sit on.

Hopefully I will keep this more frequently updated.

    Re: My Mk1's second rebuild.

First off I would like to apologise, I stated in the last post I would keep this frequently updated.
That was March!!!!! What a disappointment I am.

Although there has been no posts work has carried on, so here is a quick summary.

    Chassis notched for extra clearance

Both floor pans have been replaced.

    Reinforcing for Hydro Handbrake.

    NS A pillar repaired.

    OS A pillar replaced.

New tunnel. I had to make some adjustments after trial fitting the engine and box.

    Exhaust tunnel.

    Fire wall flange.

Baulkhead repairs and clearance for water rail.

Little tower for the brake reservoir.

    Baulkhead to chassis gussets made.

Slam panel modded and front cross member repaired

New Rad and Oil Cooler mounts made and mocked up.

Wings have started to be converted to bolt on.

So the work continues. Again I will try and keep the updates more frequent.

    Re: My Mk1's second rebuild.

As the build has progressed I have been making a new sump as the old one was a permanent temporary item to get the engine in.

First was a cardboard mock up. I wanted as much capacity as possible so it needed to fit closely to the cross member and rack.

First the bottom was cut off a std sump and milled flat. Then the rest made from 3mm sheet.

All the alloy work was carried out by a friend at JSP.

Just need the engine builder to design a baffle now.

    Looks like some quality work.

Everything I see a roll over jig it reminds me I need one.

    Sump looks the business.

They make life so much easier when working on a car. No upside down welding, can position it so your stood all they time. Would highly recommend one.
