4AGE backtop info request on fuel tank

Hi! I'll be fitting in a blacktop into my MK1 and would like to ask if what sort of modification I will need for the fuel lines. Can I use my old fuel tank for this EFI set up and just install an external electric fuel pump next to it and create a return port to the tank? I'm not really sure about the difference of an EFI and carb fuel line. I found some universal fuel tanks in ebay which seem to be priced ok. Thanks in advance.

Hi yes you can use your existing fuel tank and and modify the outlet for a bigger opening. Install a external pump and that will be ok. Your lines will need to be upgaded for fuel injection. I used 8mm copper pipe for feed and return. HTH

A bit more questions on converting to EFI.

Did you install a fuel regulator?
Do you have to install a surge tank?
How about the fuel gauge? How will I make this work still?

    Thanks again

Yes a regulator is required - usually placed after the fuel rail....... unless you use a in-tank pump as these tend to have a built in regulator. If its an Escort, the standard tank is a good shape to prevent / minimise surge unless you like running low fuel level. EFI won't have any effect on the fuel gauge sender - it'll work as standard.

As mentioned I used the standard 4age one which is located on the 20v fuel rail. Works great. Didn't need a surge tank. It's a simple setup in a escort to get working well. Fuel gauge will work as normal as that's in the tank. Shout up if you need anymore info.

Thanks guys for the info. It is such a great help. Looking forward to post my finished project. I'll stick to the original tank. M11rf, that's a great and simple setup! Thanks for sharing
