more basic questions - carbalancing and brakes...

I feel a right idiot asking this, but I've never had nice toys like this to play with! I've got one of those manometers that you can connect all 4 venturis to and set the carbs up properly. So yesterday I got everything out, warmed up the Jensen and looked for somewhere to connect the beasty to. I've circled the bit I expected to work, the blanking screw 'progression drillings cover' with the air balance to the right and idle mixture as you look at the engine ( maybe I should have used the other venturi! ) however, I got no reading at all. Obviously I'm doing it wrong. Can someone point out what I'm doing wrong??

Also, found why the handbrake failed the MOT... the tester's emergency stop blew the seals on the one wheel cyl I hadn't replaced. There is a wavy crack in the lining - hope you can see it. Is it ok to use, or will I need the linings replaced? Car's an old racer, I'm slowly getting it onto the road.

    Cheers,

    Steve

re carbs, there isnt anywhere to connect your manometer too!

crack doesnt look too drastic, but then again brakes shoes dont cost a fortune and are pretty important!

I'm guessing there are either 3 or 5 drilled holes under that screwed cover - hence its name. To use your balancers you will need to drill and tap each of the inlet manifold runners and add a 3mm nipple to allow the hose connections. The old skool way of doing this is a length of 1/2" garden hose held in each inlet and to your ear and listen for the hiss differences. With two common shafts you may still get an imbalance between 1-2 & 3-4 but thats life.

Racing car with racing brakes usually not good as road brakes! That one looks soaked with hydraulic oil or tar - whatever it looks contaminated...........for the cost, get them changed, after fixing the cylinder of course and use std. shoes!

From memory the red circle is the air inlet jet into the progression circuit - smaller hole = later prog., larger hole = earlier effect. Can't swear to it - its been a while since I had one of these apart!

The 'air balance screw' is in the red. It's used to match the idle. Yes the shoes are contaminated with brake fluid. I'll get them relined. I may well admit defeat and get the local expert to set the carbs up.

    Thanks again for your input.

tbh,ive never found the need for anything more complicated than a bit of heater hose to balance by ear!

The 4 adapters i linked to screw into my dellorto dhla carbs so you can attach the manometer
i remove 4 phillips screws and screw these adapters in but i can't see these screws on your photo so they must screw into another port on your carbs
