just to add the dyno run from yesterday was done WITHOUT the new vvt controller fitted as I left the prototype with matt so that's 134 at the wheels running rich with a twin box powerflow quiet exhaust with the vvt just turning on at 1500rpm

Why are the power/torque cross points not at 5250rpm

    Look at the Aix...

The left starts at 70 right right starts at 20.

Only if the axis are the same would the lines cross at 5252.

If the righ axis read 500-2000 ft/lbs, the torque line would even be on the graph, let alone cross the bhp plot...

Look at 5250rpm for both power and torque, torque scale is on the right, bhp on left, both read around 155bhp & 155lb/ft at 5250rpm, simple!

Re: The definitive ST170 VVT Information....

If I'm reading it right it looks like there's not much point in going above 6000rpm as the torque drops and not much more power.

Be great to see it running right. From reading above does it need bigger carbs?

Needs another mule methinks. Too low fur real comparison as to what that set up would normally achieve.
Looks a great add on for Vvt systems.

    Agreed,

    The offer stands:

Anyone out there with the following:
    1. An ST170 on Jenvies, running either an Omex or a Megasquirt running 'switch on cam' method and getting good power (or what they think is good )
    2. Willing to come down to M-Tech in westbury

Gets free trial run of me clicking this system on, and mapping their ECU to suit it, then they can either buy the system or I can remove it and load the map they arrived on...

Good comparison, and demo'd right in front of them

Re: The definitive ST170 VVT Information....

The system is perfect it does what its ment to it seams to be my car that is causing all the questions (although I have no problem with my car and the power it says its producing drives well and will drive better when the production vvt controler is fitted and fully mapped ) my car is done on a budget thats why it doesnt have 2 and a half grands worth of throttle bodies on it I have a set of 9r carbs that I may fit as they are a larger choke size also have a set of bike throttle bodies that may find their way onto my next project which is running the same engine just need to sort out an ecu to run it

anyway what matt really needs to keep the number hunters happy is someone with an st on throttle bodies that has a basic switched vvt

    The definitive ST170 VVT Information....

It's a pity I'm in Ireland as I am just fitting an ST engine running on omex 500 with Danst engineering manifold and zx12r throttle bodies. Sounds like it would be perfect for ye to tune up.

Are you still looking for a test vehicle
I have ST in a westfield with GSXR TB's, with glasflowed head and a megasquirt 3 using switch, i was going to move to full vvt control but at moment i did not have time to sort.
I may be interested in your offer if its still of interest
    Thanks

Ah, consider me on that right now Been busy working on the ME442 ECU

Who wants fully sequential, inbuilt WBO2, CAN. Knock etc for under £300? (limited time offer normal RRP will be circa £600+) We are after Beta testers...

Bike carbs, megajolt and vct removed and locked at a set position. 194bhp not too bad for a cheap setup

Re: The definitive ST170 VVT Information....

The power is good... the torque curve not so... imagine brining that mid range up... And also the rapid fall in torque after 5500 rpm... all solveable with a VVTPro

I can't understand why you delete VVT using standard cams

well I have made my choice hope is a good one and ordered the VVT controller.

Matt your download manual says watch installation video on your site but I cannot find this?

Re: The definitive ST170 VVT Information....

No rapid fall in torque at 5500. its less than the one in your dyno plot on page one. The plot scale makes it look big as its on a tight range.
Reason for deleting on standard cams, Its cheap. £30 to do or £550 for cams.

Re: The definitive ST170 VVT Information....

A little bit of fun with a Mk1 Exscort turbocharged ST170 running VVT Pro...

So the graphs below show 3 tests...

The 'dotted line' is the torque relating to right hand axis, normal line is BHP @ fly relating to LH axis. VVT Control gives over 60ftlbs towards the end...

Light Blue = NO VVT At all (just left off)
Green = The traditional turn it on at X RPM (here you can clearly see the 'kick' as it turns on at 4500)
Red = Properly mapped VVTpro control...

I would say conclusive proof that true VVT control stops tail end torque fall off but exceeds locking the cam 'mid way advanced' as you get the bottom end as well

Just about to post a vid of this awesome car!

In essence it has inbuilt WBO2 and Knock so it could self tune to a point but yes mapping is always the way to get the best

Nice flat torque curve should make a very 'drivable' motor

Re: The definitive ST170 VVT Information....

Thanks Matt for time today (I know I paid for it!)

but I suppose the question is was it worth it well 180mile round trip was worth it the car pulls so strong, I am looking forward to getting back out on a trackday to do some comparisons, but my quick drive up the road (and it was quick) the cars acceleration was truly amazing just a different car well impressed. It felt far more than a 20% increase.

what was also surprising was the comparison just switching on the VVT module and the increase was there, shame that I had not got wires upto the job but we resolved so we could continue with the mapping.

so the facts are VVT module does what it says on the tin increase in power, torque and huge increase in driveability , highly recommended over VVT switch.

i will update once I have given it a thrashing!

Re: The definitive ST170 VVT Information....

Just wanted to say a Big thank you to M-Tech for the work they did on my Westfield yesterday.
Even though I had issues with my loom causing voltage drops which was no reflection on M-Tech both Simon and Matt supported me and we quickly made up a temporary lead so we can get the mapping completed.

Matt was great at talking through what he was doing and where the gains could be made

I think their customer service was great accommodating me after arriving a little late due to weather etc. Plus I have had great support by e mail late into the night when I was asking questions on the installation.

What I would say is get a coffee machine for customers as this would be a good addition to what is a very good service.

So far I am pleased with the end result taking the car for a blast up the road resulted in a drive where the car pulled very strong it really felt like another engine.

So the end result would I recommend M-Tech the answer is Yes, would I recommend fitting of the VVT controller this is a massive yes, if you have a ST engine with the VVT switched then in my experience go and fit one you will be amazed, my car was quick before but now it pulls even stronger

I am sure our paths will cross again, thanks again
