Info reqd for Mk1 Mexico build...
I've got the engine pretty much sorted (cheers Clint) but I'm not sure what gearbox/prop/rear axle to use...can anyone give me some advice?
The car will be built for 50% track and 50% weekend driving/shows.
Cheers.

Hi Jeff,
The choice of gearbox/axle etc would really depend on what spec engine you are running, I have run various different axle ratios and gearboxes over the years, and there is always a performance/ comfort compromise.
Let me know what spec engine you are running and I will hazard some guesses, what will the max power output and revs be?
And what sort of budget are you working to?

Re: Info reqd for Mk1 Mexico build...
me and a mates just put a 2.0 mk2 together, its running a type 9 5sp box, RS2000 single piece prop, and 1100 back axle, and belive me it feckin goes up to 125 flat out, but getting there, its like a brickin bullet! i highly reccomend this setup, some people say it`ll spit 1/2 shafts, but its yet to be proven.......................... (give me a few weeks and i`ll let you know lol)

Re: Info reqd for Mk1 Mexico build...
Thanks for the replies guys...the parts I have at the moment (or will have soon) are...cossie pistons & rods, big valve head, Heskey (?) cam, twin 48's, Ashley 4-2-1 exhaust manifold, RS2000 sump and bellhousing...looking at around 200bhp.
I'd prefer a 5 spd with some uprated internals...and as I want to use it on the track, I'd like a compromise between top speed and acceleration.

Re: Info reqd for Mk1 Mexico build...
If you are going to be running 200bhp you will not need a very low diff ratio for acceleration, the power/weight will make it extremely fast through the box anyway.
If you run a standard RS2000 ratio diff 3.54:1 this will give you a reasonable (comfortable) fast cruising speed, while still giving good acceleration.
With the gearbox if you want a standard ford box, use the type 9 5speed from a 2.8 Capri or or early XR4i, this has much better ratios, a taller first gear and close ratios from there. You will need to change the input shaft though for one from a 2.0Litre Sierra, as the 2.8 one is longer (or get it re machined).
If you want to uprate it get a 2.0Litre one and a gear kit from Quaiffe or similar, then you can choose whatever ratios you want.
To give some idea of the difference in diff ratios if you take 2 cars with a 0.9:1 "overdrive" 5th gear with the same tyre size (175/70/13 in this case) and drive both at 3500rpm in 5th.
One car is fitted with a 3.54:1 RS2000 Diff This one is travelling at 73mph.
The other car is fitted with a 4.11:1 Escort 1100 diff this one would be travelling at 63mph.
They would both be showing the same speedometer reading if they hadn't been re calibrated.
Hope that helps.
If you want me to work out the revs/speed for your car measure the circumference of the tyres you are going to use and it is very easy.

Re: Info reqd for Mk1 Mexico build...
Excellent stuff...I'll start looking now for a Capri/Sierra box. I think I'll have the original shaft machined...sounds more ideal.
Now to look for a good diff. What uprated clutch should I use for this combination?

I'll second that, I always used Sierra injection clutches also, I actually found them better than the AP equivalents. I'd buy a genuine Ford though.
