Question 32/36 DGAV Electric Choke Conversion Help Needed

    Hi All,
I have just purchased a single wire electric choke conversion kit for my pinto powered mk5 Cortina Estate.
What I need to know is: where do I connect the choke wire up to?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Aaron.

W terminal of the alternator or if you do not have that to a switched ignition +12 Volts.

    Cheers for that.
Will it automatically turn off then?
I'm assuming that the coil inside sorts that out.

    Cheers,
    Aaron.

    Hi,

you want to have the electric choke working when the engine is running.
The W-terminal on the alternator is a take-off of the W-coil in the alternator, also used for a rev-counter in a diesel-engined car.
When the engine runs it gives of an AC-voltage; when the engine is not running it is 0 Volts.
If you do not have the W-terminal then use a switched +12V for the electric choke.
Ok, you can switch the ignition on without running the engine but there is nothing else (except maybe if you use a separate switch).
The switched +12V may heat up the choke a bit more quickly; if it does you can use a series resistor (power resistor of a few ohms) to delay the warm up of the choke-element.

Why not just the 12v switched live to the ign. coil? ...................except if the ign. is ballasted!

It does have a ballast resistor for the coil.
