the xe and cossie plates have been drawn up now. i have plans to make a 2wd version of the cossie and a 7degree version of the vauhall engine too.

The 4x4 and pinto starter are the same. The 2wd starter has a different hole pattern on the starter motor too.

The 6 engine block mounting holes are the same, the starter mounting holes seem to be different between 2wd and 4wd. It must be down to using the 4 x 4 gearbox and flywheel etc

My vauxhall ones aren't finished yet they are still in the test period at the moment. They will be ready with in a week or two.

The cossie block is obviously the same. The start holes are the same pitch as the type 9 pinto starter on the 4x4 but futher out for the bigger flywheel. The 2wd starter has a different starter hole pitch and is in a different possition yet again to the 4x4 starter.

duraescort on the other thread reckoned the rx7 5speed was good for 450 so would that one not be best for a cos install,is the rx7 5speed the same as the rx8 5speed?

    rx8 gearbox?

There are more than one jap box that will handle huge power
The point about the rx8 is that it CAN BE FITTED to a ford engine. At reasonable cost in uk

Not so much for a cossie with a high final drive, i reckon Gertrag boxes are the best production boxes out there.

You have said you have broken one in a previos post but when i asked you never said how much power you are running. It would be interesting to know what car you are running one in with what engine and what sort of tyres you have.

I had my escort prop shortened 2" and the end changed to an rx8 one by BAR Props ine Neath, South Wales. They do a brilliant job.

I struggle to see how these boxes could be that strong, the engine they are intended for produce very little torque, why would Mazda go to the expense of over engineering a mass produced part. An Rx8 produces 156 lb/ft at 5500 rpm, thats the same as my Pinto at slightly higher revs, why would an RX8 need a strong box?, its close ratio to keep a small light engine spinning, thats the only benefit i can see.

Interesting. Keep us updated when you strip the box. My fear is that the old style plates didn't line the input shaft up properly which would lead to the input shaft bearing failing or the teeth on the input shaft breaking off. I haven't heard from anyone apart from yourself breaking one of these gearboxes yet even with the poorly made adaptor plates.

We have to push the boundries in life and this time it is to see what these gearboxes can do. If we all denided everything before we tried it like you are doing nothing would be tested and it would all struggle to see what could be done. These base boxes are also on the back of an s2000 and people turbo and supercharge them with out box issues.

All i can safely say is it suits my needs as i have given this box a hammering and i would imagine there are many more people who will be running high torque high reving n/a engines that will suit this gearbox better than the type 9.

    Re: rx8 gearbox?

Honda S2000 makes around the same low torque. Most folk that are rallying with high revving NA engines run dog boxes, for me its the only way to go if your running decent torque and don't want the synchro reliability issues, a helical cut gear will always be stronger than a straight but synchro's will always be a weak point in any gearbox.
