    Re: rx8 gearbox?

I've found the bell housing bolt patterns online so far, going to plot the out in cad tomorrow and if I can get my big plotter up and running print a rough template out. It'll be a start at least until I can physically get some measurement's.

If you get a drawing I can get good price on having it plasma cut from steel plate.?

I csn recommend laser master for cutting the plate, had a couple of jobs done by them, quick service and good price.

I'll send them over later once I fire the laptop up. I haven't got dims for the hole diameters, was going to grab them once I pick the box up.

    Re: rx8 gearbox?

This is what I've found, the mounts/holes at the sump are missing from the Ford diagram from what I can work out though.

    Ford

    RX8

That's all I'm working from at the moment until I actually pick the box up.

All the dims are related to crank C/lines ie. all offsets.

    Re: rx8 gearbox?

the rx8 drawing is posted on an rx7 forum with the following info

" I havent double checked these yet, so id pull some measurements yourself before making anything

Ignore the grey holes, they are for a non-mazda transmission

They were pulled from a s4 t2 rear iron.

    -Jacob "

i have no idea if that helps or not

    Re: rx8 gearbox?

same thread further down confirms his dims too, will check (the best I can) the RX8 ones once I get the box. One thing that I have been wondering about is whether the speed signal from the gearbox can be used on a Corsa power steering unit....

    Re: rx8 gearbox?

So having a read into the gearbox it looks like it doesn't have a speed sensor on it, so bang goes the idea of hooking up the power steering to it! I've also plotted out the bolt hole locations, should be correct as if you're mating the bellhousing to the block looking at it in the direction of the flywheel. Can't do anything more than that until I've got the gearbox infront of me now...

Looks very interesting. I am just wondering is anyone drilling holes for the ford starter motors in the right place so a ford starter and flywheel can be used?

From what I can gather the Ford flywheel fits no bother, will look into starter location once I knock a card template up to check I've not gone horrendously wrong somewhere!

That is the obvious route, the starter nose doesn't take much space past the flywheel.

It would be for the best i think to rip the whole ford bellhousing off including the starter position and to worry about making clearance when trying to bolt it up

    Re: rx8 gearbox?

yes the ford starter position can be replicated in the adapter as the starter will bolt to adapter not new b/h. if the new starter space lines up then great, if not then starter position can be rotated about the f/w as long as space on block allows.

    Re: rx8 gearbox?

i have done this and had it up and running in my mk1 cortina on a crossflow (as in pics)
its not a straight forward bolt in job
i went to P9cyo ages ago for a plate and it was just a piece of steel so i thought ill do it but out of alli myself
i used the inertia starter so had to mod the belhousing to clear the shaft
i also had to modify the pivot ball for the clutch fork as when the box was pushed home the thrust bearing was touching the clutch before the bellhousing would even go close
used the front part of rx8 prob into the orig prop

im now fitting it upto an st170 engine

my only concern is that i have only done the bolt holes by eye .
i sat an engine on its front edge with the plate bolted to the engine then sat the gearbox inplace marked the holes the drilled and tapped them
so im not sure if its pefectly central

    Re: rx8 gearbox?

anyone have a pic of the adapter that goes on the input shaft, looked at the rx box and the end of the shaft is pretty flush with the bellhousing so by the time you use an adapter plate, it doesn't leave much shaft in the spigot

if you look at your rx8 box and your ford box you will see that the rx8 shaft sticks out more

    What alladin asked also

Box's are cheap. Chap was asking 95 for 1, which was very good but ended up taking 65 for it.... so its deffo the future compared to a type 9

scrappies pay good money for a cat these days ?

i think both drawings for bolt layouts are above if correct ? the inner cut out would be to suit pinto engine /flywheel then the outer shape to suit box /starter position - well thats my thoughts but i may be missing the target ?

    Re: rx8 gearbox?

Hi mate I have plates all done to suit it's not just that easy , zetec v6 and redtop vauxhall each one is different

Will pop more pics up next week but I can supply plates with rear oil seal for box if using type 9 prop and relocation plate to move slave cylinder , also in process of making cable cultch mount as a few chaps asking over that ... My plates are 10mm steel , which is nothing compared to some 30mm alloy ones I've seen which just make more problems . Mine are cut drilled counter sunk reverse bolts as the bolts holes are very close and they all have to be flush fitting around the top of your engine , I spend a lot of time looking into which 6 speed gearbox was best suited as a replacement for the type 9 box , few people have had plates of me and please with them ..
Your all welcome to try yourself but for those that just want a conversion plate that will do the job .. Give us a bell phil 07815007836. 

    Re: rx8 gearbox?

P9cyo, have you done one for a zetec se (puma 1.7 specifically, already had the crank bored out to fit std type 9 short shaft)? Starter is on the engine side at 2 oclock looking from the front.

    Re: rx8 gearbox?

Does the type 9 bell housing go on to stud pattern .. If so you should be able to use cossie starter on the bottom left , other than that it's like the vauxhall red top which can be done but you have to remove and fettle section off the rx8 box , but it's doable just sorting redtop out now . Re: rx8 gearbox?

Sorry mate thought you meant on back of engine .. If bolt holes same as type9 box top 2 bolts mainly I could do it off your samwich plate , but you may be able to use the lower fixing point and just remove the old starter lug off the engine ??? Just a thought .phil

Yes mate you just use your type 9 starter , it's a more or less straight swap for type 9 ..

Ie remove type 9 gearbox bolt plate on engine bolt starter on plate and then bolt rx8 gearbox on . Your prop may need a inch or two taken out depending on what it's in , some will get away with it .
But it's easy to do your prop yourself , I put instructions in with plate kit ... Although you can use the rx8 carbon prop by just re drilling your diff flange and nut and bolt it .. I'm going to go with rx8 as you can get for 10 20 ..

This is is so much of win win , price quality strength and extra gear too , it's 1" 23 spline same as type9 or 2.0 clutch ... I'm putting them in all my projects and I've got lots .lol

if if you look at the pics inner bolts are and shape is same as type9 bell housing and the out bolts to suit rx8 box the cut out on the left is for clearance to suit the slave cylinder ,

have ve these for v6 zetec and vauxhall redtop , phil

Banktransfer better really but paypal if you must just hate given paypal funds ,lol

and I'd need the the block really as it's better to try fit it and you can see any issues , and bolt all up but may be able to do it of the sandwich plate pattern ...

Do you have size of the St / Volvo flywheel . Just to check it will go inside the rx8 box ... ???
Should be ok but best to check before hand . It is a small box as you can see on my plate the bolts are very close together and right on the edges ... Phil

The zetec se is totally different to the standard ford type 9 bolt pattern, more like the duratec (it is a yamaha designed engine), still thinking about this as I have already splashed out 200 notes on a type 9 bellhousing, will have to weigh up the economics of this method or cutting off the rx8 bellhousing and welding on a plate to join to the type 9 bell housing, just thinking out loud.

Depending on your clutch weather flat pressure plate race type or raised and thrust bearing , it moves down the slave cylinder and takes up any play or free movement in the slave rod and clutch fork .. Phil
